Parents of the HS Class of 2013

We can count on Walker to get the party started! We can play the Ramones…hopefully we can add The Cure, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears and of course U2?

Annie we have our D’s going to Kenyon Review Young Writer’s Workshop. mine 1st session, Robs 2nd. I will only be there to drop her off and take a tour. I don’t think my D is interested for college because it is rural.

Wherenext: that is my kind of playlist :)

We haven’t figured out full travel plans for D & Kenyon yet. At first I was thinking that I’d have her fly one way, but I’m hoping she’ll agree to a look see at Miami of Ohio on the way there and Denison on the way home. She asked me last week “Is Kenyon on your list?” Um, no but it can be. There’s a new scholarship for alumni of the summer writing program. I don’t remember the particulars. Figure they’ll tell the kids about that while they’re there.

As for meet ups…I actually just met up with a College Class of 2014 thread member for lunch today! I’ve met a number of parents from the UA forum at orientation etc. It kind of freaks my kids out when I randomly greet people they’ve never met on campus. A group of us met the night before orientation & the kids sat at one table while parents sat at another; I believe the winning kid quote of the night was “wow, this is like match.com for college parents.”

Oh the sex talks. I’m pretty open but my kids are not. Talks in the car are great, especially on the highway because they can’t get out no matter what the topic. D2 got the explanation far earlier than I planned because she was quite obstinately arguing about a plot development in a sitcom (i.e. the HS boy got his gf pregnant AND THEY WEREN’T MARRIED! YOU CAN’T HAVE A BABY WITHOUT BEING MARRIED!) Of course the conversation concluded with “and you can’t talk about this with anyone on the playground” since she was in 3rd grade. And we live in the Bible Belt. Ah memories :)

RobD-Too funny in the third grade!

Is your 2014 at American? D is interviewing there and GW before Kenyon. I have a friend who has a child in class of 2014 at AU too. it is not a big feeder from SF (: I think it is a good idea to look at Miami of Ohio on the way. However, D is about coasts only at the moment. Even in Scotland!

I have a feeling this group may meet up! There is hope thanks to RobD!
How do you do smily faces and copy quotes? I am so lame!

Nope. Older D is at Alabama. But she knows someone at American ;)

We could all get tee shirts that say: CC HS Class of 2013/College Class of 2017—or better yet: The RobD group! :)

Thanks everyone for all the hugs over the loss of our cat. Even my DS, who I never see cry, cried. We are taking comfort in the fact that she’s no longer suffering.

Today is University of Utah day (U of U is how we say it here). I’m excited but son, as usual, shows no outwardly excitement. He did go and get his haircut yesterday so he’d look good then proceeded to get sunburned playing tennis…ever hear of sunscreen darling?

Oh terinzak, I’m so sorry about your kitty. I lost mine in 2010. She was 17.

Longhaul - Admittedly, I know nothing about the college stuff, but I’d still think that that range is a match for your son. His stats are solid and I know it’s not pc to say but he has the boy thing in his favor. Even at colleges that have pretty equal acceptance numbers, I can’t help but think it’s the girls that skew the gpa stat upward. But I could be completely wrong.

Good morning!

Love the tee shirt idea!

DD had her junior speech yesterday. She had to get dressed up for it and she looked great! She was really nervous, but I think that once she got started, she was fine.

She finally arranged to take her Health final - left over from several marking periods ago! She was sick the last few weeks of the term, and had a few incompletes. She took care of all of them, except for this one-credit health class! She finally realized that the year is ending and she needs to go take the final. This far out from the class, I hope she does well on it. Colleges don’t usually look at those kinds of classes do they?

drmom123 - Well of course our t-shirts would say “MTOBEIYF!” (if you joined late, we decided some million pages ago (ha) that this would be our group’s motto. It’s taken from the Hunger Games (I guess) and means “May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor” )

I favor t-shirts that say “Lucky 13’ers” on the front and MTOBEIYF on the back. That way we can work both of our themes in. LOL!

Thanks RobD for the emoticons link! It’s been a long while since I’ve been on any sort of message board and I have forgotten a lot!

I have a feeling while all of you will be rocking out to the Ramones, I’ll be ensconced in the Rap/Hip-Hop section of the meet-up ;). Biggie, Tupac, Puffy, Dre, Snoop, Cube… anybody?

Throw in some REM and some classic Prince!

How about T’s that say
“You’ve been Rob’d!”
(get it? like Robbed?) harharhar

So who else has kids taking SATs again tomorrow? My D will be up and at it for the last time. This will be her third try… I hate this test. After trying to convince her to do her subject tests, I’ve given up as she wants to follow the guidelines of her prep class teacher and take it tomorrow. It’s the last time, though, as I’m forcing the ACT on her in Sept (I think she did better there with absolutely no prep) and then she’s going to have to hope she remembers something for the SAT subject tests in October. Anyone have a clue why these kids with gobs of AP scores they could submit have to sit through subject tests? Seems sort of silly. I’m not too sure why the prep class wants the kids to take the test in May and June but I guess there must be reason to believe the kids improve between the two. I can hope.

I live in T-shirts, so whatever you want to put on them…(well…mostly) I’d be up for wearing!
My D is taking a single subject test tomorrow, because … I have no idea why… she was signed up to take the SAT (biggie) tomorrow, but a few weeks ago decided to take Math II. She plans to take SAT in October, and do a couple more SAT II’s in Novemeber, if needed. she is not going to take the SAT three times… I agree, all these tests seem pretty over the top in time, money, energy, and worried parents!
DD has yet to ask another teacher for LOR…I know that she can still ask in the fall, but in our school, some teachers have “limits” (which I understand) so, I worry that she will not have a teacher to ask…(probably , I shouldnt worry?)
–We have a cat who is 13. He found us one summer on vacation. My kids have all grown up with him. He’s getting pretty tired, and DD is sooooooo close to him…I worry about his leaving, and her being away at school or something…

laurendog - I’ll be with you gettin my head nod on  Although I am an 80s child and love my punk and new wave too.

89wahoo - I honestly cannot figure out why some schools even have kids take subject tests. They don’t publish the scores and don’t even say how much they factor into admissions decisions. Is it simply another hoop to jump through? I get that they test subject matter as opposed to the SAT and a kid theoretically could do poorly on the SAT but fantastic on the subject tests. But it seems they cause much more angst than necessary because their use is just so unclear.

Haha! T shirts with my calling card on them? Yikes (although the I’ve been robbed one is clever

D is taking two SAT II’s tomorrow (Literature & US History.) Ree: I feel the same way that you do: with so many schools taking the ACT in lieu of the SAT + SAT II, I do think it’s a hoop to see if you’re really interested.

We aren’t gonna hoop jump. No subject tests. D has taken the SAT twice and whether she takes it a third time is up to her.

We’ve got some severe weather headed our way later today. Guess it must be remnant of that tropical storm or something? Dunno.

Any good movies out? I have a friend coming in from out of town this weekend and we’re doing a girls night out tomorrow. :-)

Happy Friday! First day of summer vacation and it’s looking like thunderstorms all day. We were SUPPOSED to be going to the state softball tournament today. Oh well, my lawn needs the water!

S is taking the Physics and Math II subject tests tomorrow. He did really well on the ACT in the fall, so he doesn’t need to take the SAT – yay! I do not understand the need for kids to take the subject tests if they do well enough on the AP test – they are both Collegeboard tests. It just seems like a money making scam to me.

I listen to all kinds of music, save the really heavy metal or hardcore rap (sorry, laurend). I’m mostly a classic rock girl, but I love the nostalgia of the 80’s stuff. I was a big INXS fan back in the day!

Longhaul – did you see this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/767486-where-did-your-3-3-3-6-gpa-child-get-25.html?highlight=where+did+your+get+in?

Just to clarify . . . S’13 does not have a cumulative 4.0 gpa – this is the first year he’s achieved that! None of the kids in his class have a 4.0 UW – we have a pretty tough grading scale (95% for an A/4.0). I’m really proud of him – he had a tough schedule and he actually studied this year!

No SAT or II’s here. Only one school DS is looking at even uses them (for placement for foreign languages). If he gets in there he will take the Spanish one at the end of next year. They are taking the ACT again next week–have they done any practice tests, no… Scores are fine for admissions but hoping to bump them up some for better scholarship money.

Congrats Mommydearest13! That is quite the accomplishment for your son - I love it when kids rise to the challenge, it says a lot about their character.

D13’s final day of classes is today. She is fried right now…so we are passing on the SATs tomorrow as well as the ACTs next week. She just can’t do it…right now her scores are fine for most of the schools that she is interested in. She is going on a service trip to Africa at the end of the month…I need to wrap my head around it in terms of getting her ready and emotionally letting her go. This is a tough one but she has the calling…

D11 is currently in Spain learning about international business/cultural immersion. The last two days she has had 9 hours of class each day and she said she loves it - today they are on a walking tour of the city. Her last status on Facebook… I’m having soooo much fun here idk if I’m ever coming back!
