Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Can’t keep up! This sure is a group of doers with great musical taste! Vandy and mommyD-INXS was so college and college BF so not best choice for my current playlist(: Love the addition of Madona and Wham! Plus Billy Squire, should we ad Cyndi Lauper and Billy Ocean? MommyD my H will want in with your playlist!

Vandy and Wahoo- keep safe in the weather!

Asmuoch- Great movie suggestion!

drmom- your poor baby with 3 hours of sleep lately! Hope you both feels rested now!

Fred-I think he will like playing bass…the guitar right? (we designed a music room for the kids but I know nothing (8 ) The only thing that worries me is it is a mix of intermediate and advanced musisians and he has never played formally just lots of lessons and rock band camps.

CBG and TX5- Berkeley or Cal is a feeder school from here and quite a group get in and some families are diehard about Cal and their kids are into it. UCLA seems to get the biggest reaction from kids for status because they don’t grow up with it (of the UC’s). Stanford gets about 3-4 of our kids. The other even bigger feeders CSUSLO, Chico, Davis, UCSB and Oregon. Out of state is well represented. 75% to 4 year out of 600.

Someone is running State Champions tomorrow, couldn’t check name /:? Good luck to your S and keep us posted.

Dadof2- We have the same Goldilocks syndrome of size, urban enough and on a coast.

we are watching Band of Brothers tonight before D off to sleep before SAT Sub. tomorrow.

Just wanted to express my concurrence with so many that have said what a great group this is. I posted a few weeks ago about my D falling asleep so much in class, during tests, etc. Turns out it was happening even more than I knew. Anyway, took D to the pediatrician yesterday and had the blood test done. Won’t know results til next week, but I know the Dr. requested the tests for thyroid, mono, and anemia. And she told us she would order sleep apnea depending on outcome of the blood test.

Walking out of the Dr. office, DD said “I definitely got the impression the Dr. didn’t take us very seriously and was just humoring us.” I replied, “It’s okay. We’re getting what we wanted.”

Thanks again to all the helpful and encouraging replies to my original post.

STEM-Glad to here you went to the Dr. That is definitely something to be taken care of! I have been wondering what the latest is for your girl. Fingers crossed it is easily resolved!

STEM: Hope you find out something soon from that bloodwork! It’s maddening tomknowmthatnsoemthing is wrong but not know what it is!

Good luck to all on SAT’s and sporting events!

Good luck to all juniors who is taking SAT today. Rainy day here. Need to go get H from airport. S having his time at RML and only texting me a line or two when he has some time. Will be back early morning tomorrow. I just had a taste of empty nest last two days. It is not so fun.

STEM: keeping your D in my thought.

I wish we have a like button here, whenever i read some thing, i seem to search for it.

Have a great weekend all…

Not excusing what the dad did at all, but the Cheltenham mall has like maybe 20 stores including Target, a chick-fil-a, Chilis, and a Wendy’s. It’s across the street from a residential area. Stupid decision yes, but I think child endangerment is a bit much for a 16yo. I’m guessing there was a bit more in the family history and this incident brought it to light.

Good luck to the SAT testers today.

STEM, good luck with th doctor! My H has thyroid problems, as do a ton of people I’ve come to discover since he was diagnosed. Let us know what you hear. H is the only guy I know with it, the rest are female for what it’s worth.
Donivrian, I’m with you on the ‘like’ button. I want it so often!
D is off the her SAT. She called, one of her buddies forgot his calculator?!?! Oh my. I found her brother’s but then the guy’s father woke up and took his up. Lucky out HS us close by. After 3" of rain yesterday, I’m wondering if S14 has soccer tryouts today or not. No indication the field is closed, but I think it’s grass not turf and am hoping it is. He’s a goalie. 3" of rain means he’s going to be a muddy mess!

WOW-miss a day and you just can’t keep up. Congratuations to everyone that did something amazing, sorry for any losses, good luck to whomever needs it and whatever else I missed :D. DD qualified for the state tournament yesterday, 3rd year running! She was pretty happy. Quiet weekend around here. Graduation is today and the kids have to play in the band for that. A couple grad parties tomorrow. Weather is perfect!!

Hi All…
Good Luck to all the testers today…
School is out here :)

Sorry for my rant the other day…and no not all leaders come out of the Iveys…my issue is the lack of acceptance of our Great kids…I had been reading the accepted stats and the international numbers are so high that if they lowered the percentage, them several of our kids Would be accepted …anyway
Monof Nea…I hear you…the mailings are unfair…the kids get their hopes up …if they have that dream…maybe the Iveys are reaching out to the high scorers and looking for our Gems …as brought up be Walker…
DrMom…Great point TA’s do teach a lot of classes at H and many other schools…That is a Very good question to ask on your tours…who teaches the freshman classes…
Stem…sleep apnea is very evident…just go Listen to her breathing every 1/2 hr…if it’s peaceful that’s not apnea…if you hear short gasps…or interrupted air flow…it’s apnea…my D had it as a kid…I got her adenoids out and it went away…check allergies to…is she stuffed up?..you can tape her sleeping too…
So many post to comment on but I’m following in my free moments…
This is a Great Group and a Big Party next year would be awesome…
and not in in basement…
I’m meeting D’s GC today…I really have to bite my tongue…
Thank Goodness for all you guys…I feel so empowered by this groups knowledge…Thanks…I’ll be biting…and thinking of you…
Have a Great day…Pouring here…nasty…at least the garden doesn’t have to be watered…

MTOBEIOF… :)

STEM - If the bloodwork comes back negative, seriously consider a sleep study. I work with someone who was diagnosed with narcolepsy recently. She’s around 40 and talked about how much trouble she used to get into as a child for sleeping in class.

All this talk of 80s music made me pull out my photo albums to show my son. And I got a bit freaked thinking that all he “really” knows about are jpegs and mp3s. He’s never owned a music cd and will never know the agony of waiting to get your pictures developed so you can see if there were any good shots taken. He doesn’t even think of an album as a physical thing. It’s simply a collection of digital data. Oh I got sidetracked. He thought I looked ridiculous in my legwarmers and ripped flashdance style sweatshirt. Couldn’t believe I actually went outside looking like that …lol. He has no idea how much ammo he gave me. I don’t have to mall him. The threat of the embarrassing mom making an appearance is enough to make him toe the line for life I think ;)

Good luck to our test-takers this morning! We have our usual routine in place – I make oatmeal, then drive him to the local HS. I’m excited that he’ll be out early because it’s just two subject tests.

On the mall thing … the guy’s a jerk, but child endangerment? Ds would be thrilled if I dropped him off at the mall. Heck, he’s old enough to drive himself to the mall. Seems like there’s some lesser charge they could have gone with. Parenting classes are a good idea. I used to teach them for people who were court-ordered to take them. Interesting times, those were!

Good morning families!

I can’t keep up - I missed a day on here!

Wild weather - I hope everyone came out okay!

terinzak, sounds like a great visit! Love the tour stories.

Re the playlist - General Public - “Tenderness” was a big one for me! And Billy Idol, until he came to give a concert and was so insulting and rude that no one listened to him again!

Good luck to all the test-takers today! DD is off taking the SAT now. She was really grumpy this morning, but better by the time we got to the test-site. She’s taking it a neighboring high school, so we sat in the car for a few minutes and made up stories about different kids waiting: “That kid over there, frantically pouring over that study guide? FAIL.” “That girl with the paperback? Reading Neitsche.” “That kid, sniffling? coke-head.” DD was laughing by the time she got out the car, so my job was done.
DD is getting a cold, so I gave her Advil and sent her off -hopefully she holds up for the day!

Terinzak- Those are funny tour stories! In our house we have two full bathrooms. The master one is fine but the one for the other three bedrooms is TINY. There is a single sink, toilet and bathtub/shower and they are all crammed in there with no extra space- so the sink and toilet length are all the standing space in the bathroom. Got the visual? When we moved here seven years ago, we thought we would add a second bathroom when my daughter became a teenager- after all, a girl sharing a small bathroom with two younger boys can be kind of icky. But ultimately we decided it was good for all of them to share and learn to work with each other… Long story short, sharing any size bathroom with any number of girls will probably be a very large step AHEAD for my poor long-suffering D! BTW, the dorms sounded great!

YDS- Isn’t it funny how they are desperate for a break and then get bored! Two days!!

80s music- Thought of a few more that would have to be on the list, like the Go-Gos, Joan Jett and Duran Duran. :-)

MomofNEA- I agree with the rant about Harvard. It is just dumb. I just toss that crap right into recycling.

STEM- Hope your D has a great trip! How exciting! She’ll be fine. When my D went to Africa there was no phone contact either but we did get periodic email reports from the team leader. Those were always very reassuring! SO GLAD you got your D tested. Please don’t forget to get back to us, if you feel comfortable, with what was going on. Hopefully you will get answers soon!

DrMOM- YES!! Good for your D. That is so important. These kids have all done well and accomplished much. The best school for all of them is where they will be appreciated and given opportunities to continue their paths with joy! So glad your D is getting that it isn’t about the acceptance/rejection! :-)

Dadto2- We like that size as well but I find that it is hard to find on the whole. Trying to find a financial fit is also a problem! There are a number she could get into, but I don’t think the merit money would be adequate.

Wherenext- Definitely add Cindy Lauper! Wasn’t a fan of Billy Ocean myself but I’ll just skip that track…

Re:80’s- My D dressed up in several time periods this week for Humanities class. One day she dressed up as a Flapper, one day she dressed up in 60s garb and one day the 80s. She looked hilarious! She asked me if she could tape some of the small video tapes together. I was like “Why? Those are home movies. I don’t want you to tape them together!” She kept saying “No, not the home movies, the little video tapes we have…” and finally I realized the poor child was talking about CASSETTE TAPES!!! LOL! Waves of nostalgia as we looked through the boxes. The Who, Cat Stevens, John Denver etc. I coulda really blown her mind if I had kept 8 tracks!

YDS- what qualifications does one need to teach those parenting classes?

Best of luck to everyone’s kids taking tests today. Wishing for clear thinking and much success!! Sun is out for us after well over ten inches of rain yesterday. Won’t need to water anything for a few days around here! Off to take my two older kids to VBS Counselor training this morning, then will spend the afternoon at the US Naval Academy with a friend who is visiting the area from Mississippi with her son. :-)

Kids getting bored -my ds15 has been out a week and wasn’t scheduled to work until yesterday and morning swim practice doesn’t start until Monday. He was Bored! I can’t imagine a few of my friends kids who don’t have a job or definite summer plans. As a parent that would drive me nuts! Both of my kids work and swim in the summer or I might kill them!

S taking Math II SAT subject test today. Semester grades are in. A in AP US History, PreAP Physics and AP ComSci II. B in every thing else. (AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Lang, Pre AP Pre Calculus).

Perazz. That is a tough schedule! Great grades! What is pre AP? Is that honors? My kids school doesn’t have the designation. Hopefully the SAT goes well. My dd took Math II in May with a very high grade in honors pre calc thinking she didn’t need to prepare and didn’t do as well as she hoped. Probably not a big deal because only one school on her list requires the subject tests and her SAT I math score is high but it was kind of a wake up call to prepare! Hopefully she will do some prep for the ACT next weekend.

My son knows that the absolute worst thing he can say to me is that he’s bored. Just the idea of that makes my head want to explode. My solution to boredom usually results in a lower than normal electric bill the following month :)

D texted me on the verge of tears yesterday. (and she is pretty stoic about these sort of things) She has lost her quarter A in AP Lang as a result of last minute Shakespeare test. Found out this morning online that she now has a 93.4 in the class leaving her .1 from the rounded 94 A. She is hanging on by the skin of her teeth to semester A because of perfect score on state test that is used as semester test. Teacher is still quizzing them on material this week, so hopefully she can secure the A. This class has been so challenging for her with up and down results all year. She has worked so hard and really wanted to show improvement from first semester…can’t wait for this year to be over!

vandy, I can’t remember what qualifications I was supposed to have, but they definitely did training (I was a psych minor in college so I think that helped). The people in the class were interesting. I was only scared once. Some of the people were court-ordered. Some were going through a divorce, and their lawyers told them to take the classes to get a leg up on their future-ex in a custody dispute. And some were just sweet people who wanted to do right by their kids and genuinely just want to be the best parent they can be.

Ds was soooo confident getting out of the car today. Ah, the optimism of youth. :)

He starts his internship Tuesday, so he’ll definitely be less bored starting then.

Well, I officially cannot keep up. We went to Tulane on Thursday, but I can’t report much because I sprained my ankle on Monday and H and D had to do the tour without me. I loved the campus and the live oak trees. D liked it very much. Yea!

Everybody, have a great weekend.

Socialdramamama, are you around? D still has not received her May SAT results. Did you decide to cancel the scores totally or will you at least get something back. My D misbubbled, too.
