Anniez and TTTC, Similar situation here, about 11 on my list, 3 of those also on D’s list, the 3 that we have visited. They are all matches/safeties for stats but a few are financial reaches depending on scholarships.

Walker, our GC’s are the same way. The only schools they ever seem to talk about are the in-state U’s. Once in a while, they may mention a state school in a neighboring state.

SteveMA, I don’t entirely trust the Cappex data, but not so much because people might intentionally misreport. I just think the sample set may be misrepresentative due to the voluntary self-reporting. Seems that people would be more likely to go back and change an “applied” to an “accepted” and not bother with their "rejected"s. On the other hand, there is the Common Data Set to serve as a reality check. The scatterplot is a nice visual for those of us who do not have access to Naviance.

Monring, all. Congrats to everyone for all the successes!

In Naviance, ds has about 15 schools listed as ones he’s interested in, but, in reality, his short list is seven or eight. The others are there in case Plan A doesn’t work out. We were at a party last night, and he shocked me by telling someone our flagship is back on the table. What??? He swore to me that he wouldn’t even consider it. I think it’s because so many 2012 guys from his school decided to go there, including the salutatorian. Somehow made it look more legitimate. Fine with me!

Most exciting news is that ds1 gets home from college tomorrow. Ds1 and ds2 are great friends, so the house always is more fun (and louder) when they’re together.

S13 told me that cramming for two days for the SAT IIs definitely helped. He went on to say thats why he never argues with me because I ALWAYS end up being right! I love that kid! :D

I like the wrong house line too. I dont have to say a thing to my kids I have a death stare that stops just about anyone in their tracks.

I dont think we have Naviance either. I never bothered to check since I knew it was highly unlikely that there were any kids applying to the schools S is looking at; and if there were, thered be so few that the data would be hidden rendering it useless.

S13 has 12 schools on his list. 3 financial safeties, 2 matches with high likliehood for merit, 4 matches with highly competitive merit, and 3 academic/financial reaches.

We went to the state softball tournament yesterday and ended up seeing a graduation ceremony as well. The seniors on the one team were missing their commencement ceremony by being in the tournament, so they put on their caps and gowns and were presented with their diplomas.

S13 and his GF are going graduation party hopping all day/night today. Right now hes sterilizing his bathroom I told him he wasnt going anywhere until it was clean! Why are boys so gross?!?!

terinzak, sounds like your S has solid choices with his 1 and 2, but I would hesitate to call any school a safety if my D had no desire to go there. I can just imagine the battles of getting her to do the application! I think “love thy safeties” that I have seen hear on CC is very sage advice.

Wish I had thought of the “wrong house” line a few years ago. If we tried that now, DD would probably go to the neighbors and call child protective services herself.

S3 is still sleeping. I think Prom was a success. They went in a group of 100!! Which was odd. They all took pictures at a nearby park and then had dinner catered at one of the girl’s houses. Then they took a party bus (or two?) to the prom. I asked if their was any drama and he said no. Also he said it was fun, but other than that I didn’t get any information.

MDmom: Congrats on the great race! I think that UCLA is beautiful. They use it in a lot of movies so I think we have been programmed that “this is what a college looks like”. S2 had to eliminate all red from his wardrobe when he went up there. I come from a UCLA family (mom, sister, dad (law school), cousins, grandfather, etc…) but went to Pharmacy School at USC (undergrad at UCSB) so I am the “black sheep”. SInce USC is so expensive, I don’t mind my kids going to UCLA!! S2 comes home in about a week and a half, but they give athletic tours throughout the summer. I think the athletes do the job that S2 does in the summer. A few months ago he was giving a tour to a football recruit and when he was giving him a tour of the weight room they ran right into Tim Tebow, who was evidently working out with the quarterback coach.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend. I am letting S3 sleep in a little before I remind him of next weeks ACT!

I think we have 10 schools that DD agrees “is the list”. I know I wrote at some point we still need another safety, according to the GC. We just havent had any time to go visit anymore schools; I dont think we will until the fall. It makes me a bit nervous, because I want her to and be getting those applications organized and done before end of October…and she plans to take the SAT’s in OCtober and another round of SATII’s in November; and recently she said she might take the ACT
with writing in September…our school does not give any time for visiting schools…so, when am I going to get her to see and interview for the schools, if all the weekends are all booked (or so it seems! :{

Ah “The List.” The official list has 9 (but I’m thinking 2 are coming off soon) my supplemental list has 4 and D just mentioned another school to me last night that one of her writing buds from Sewanee told her thought would be perfect for her. I’m pretty sure she’ll apply to 8-10.

DH said this morning “when does she start applications?” I had to smile as he’s not as uh, invested in the process as I am But it’s a comin’ time.

I remember constantly walking around movie sets going from class to class at UCLA. It became annoying when running late. We are a house divided here! H had to dodge camera crews at SC too. My kids like the location of UCLA but like SC campus just as well.

MDmom-What a fun day to run at Drake Stadium! Congrats S’s races and the Stanford Camp! What an awesome experience!

Is there any way to do Navience if your school doesn’t participate?

Great that everyone generally has positive feelings about yesterday’s SATs. Hopefully gut intstincts are correct.

“Our” list is still ridiculously long. About 23 I’m sure he will apply to considerably less. I’m guessing 10-13 which still seems like a lot, but aside from his safeties, I’m not banking on how things will turn out. His GPA is very iffy and depending on what classes the colleges include in their calclulations, it could be below 3.0.

Good for you to have the support of DH. I think mine perked up a little when I suggested some college visits this summer.

Also, working on the Death Stare that MommyDearest13 has perfected. Works best with my youngest, she is still impressionable but S13 and S15 humor me & react appropriately at times.

Still trying to get our minds around the list. Thank goodness that our flagship is highly ranked in computer engineering/science & it is still on the list. I think we, too, have a record number of kids from 2012 class attending.

Trying to work on other that will offer merit aid since we will not qualify for need based aid(but can’t figure out how to meet the price tag for the privates.)

If you have a safety or two and a few you should get into & then one or two reach schools, is that enough (assuming you are correct with the safety)?

My S also isn’t crazy about his safety - free tuition, too. He complains that “everyone goes there” and “I don’t like some of the kids who go there.” I keep trying to explain that he will probably never run into “those” kids. Oh well, if he can get enough merit aid to go somewhere else - great!

Last week, at his voice competition, he was heavily recruited by UCLA, which has a great music school. But the OOS tuition is crazy. He wants to meet with one of the professors for a lesson while he’s in LA this month - but I told him not to get too excited. Sad that financial reality doesn’t always meet expectations.

Just curious how many of our peeps have girls interested in STEM subjects. It seems like a lot more girls start out college in STEM than end up graduating in it. My DD13a is probably going to start with a bio major but I’m not sure she will stay there. She is very good in all subjects, and we have explained to her that being a bio or science/math major is not necessary for med school.

My DD13b will be an MT BFA or BA major most likely. Yes, I have to manage both of these very different kids and apps/auditions for next year. I may lose my damn mind.

I have to agree that I feel pretty good about yesterday’s SAT. Although on the essay I completely forgot that we had only two pages, so I had about three minutes in the end to somehow transform my last paragraph into a bit of a conclusion. I plan on taking the ACT next week, so we’ll see how that goes! As far as this past SAT is concerned, I wanted to bring up my math and critical reading grades. I know that the writing grade will go up.

One and a half more weeks of classes left then I have three finals and summer starts (:
It’s so odd to realize that I have 193 days (counting finals) of school with these people. I’m so excited, but it is slightly unreal.

Also, I’ve found two schools in Manhattan (where I want to go to college) that I’m considering my safeties (my gpa is about .8 higher than their averages and my sophomore year SAT already surpasses the average SAT score by 70 points per section) that I really like. They are both relatively small, but they give good merit aid to kids who are in the honors program (and with my stats, I should get into them), and to kids who are very involved within their communities (which I definitely am). So, this should be fun.

walker:^my older D is a musical theatre BA at American. We went through the whole audition madness two years ago. Let me know if you have any specific questions. It is quite a crazy process.

Megpmom: thank you, and I know it is! The bigger problem is being able to devote equal time to my arts kid and my science kid. Very hard and always has been. I’ve seen your posts on th MT board… Always listening!
