Walker, glad you survived! I think it’s great that your DD is taking dance. My DD has no real arts involvement now and it’s one thing that I hope she does more of. She used to play cello, sing in the choir and go to the county arts school (drawing) but all that fell to wayside with other things going on.

And you aren’t a slacker parent! (insert laughing emoticon here.) DD has one school on her list, and I have 20 on a possible list! She doesn’t want to talk about it - she just wants me to put her in a car and take her to see a few, and she’ll pick from there.

yes, there were acceptances and rejections before. It’s weird that it just happened. Maybe someone in the graduating class complained?

kelowna, I hope that arml goes well! (I don’t remember what part of the country you are in - did he go to Penn State?)

Meeting with GC wasn’t to bad…went over College list and essay topics…he adores D so that’s a good thing LOR should be fine…I’m not 100% with his list…but it’s a good mix…2 reach, 4 maybe, 3 safety…just not sure how the money will fall…and that will be the deciding factor…not something D wants to hear…but that’s the reality…
SAT yesterday was interesting she said…she loved the essay topics…ACT again next Sat then Done for the summer…she’s likes the ACT and even said she would Study this week… If score are within range for her schools…done with testing…
I hope everyone did well yesterday…
The sun is shinning and it is Beautiful out today…

Love the music choices…I’m actually a child of the 60’s 70’s…so in honor of her passing how about a little Disco Donna Summer…
I always loved dancing in my youth…still do and as I clean the house I dance around music blasting…(as long as no one is around)…or they would commit me… :)

sdm, no scores from May yet? weren’t they posted 5/24? It’ s good that your DD thinks she did well on the section needed, in spite of the proctor!

annizz-we have that issue too. I found that Cappex has the same scattergrams. Someone will say that they don’t trust that because it is “self-identified” but I fail to see how that makes a difference. What use is it for someone to lie about their stats to see where they would get in. None of the schools our DS is looking at have info on Navianace at our school and only 1 school DD is looking at does. One school DS is considering has at least 50 kids from our high school there an that information is blocked-no idea why.

socialdrama–our kids only have 3 that they are for sure applying to on their list. I told them they need 6-8. They are looking for good merit aid packages and need to expand out some. Once school is out and they have a bit more time to spend on the computer, we will sit down and review options again.

Dance recitals–I am SO glad those are done. DD did dance one year and DS for 3. The 3 1/2 hour recitals to watch them dance for 2 minutes was just way too much for us.

I am new to this thread (don’t know why!!) and posted this on another thread yesterday. Thought I’d share with you folks too.
“Just dropped D2 off for her final SAT attempt. She was a “test change” person with an admission ticket for SAT 2’s and decided recently to bag that idea and instead to try and raise SAT I scores. At 7 AM she was the 10th person on line. The other 9 were “walk-ins”, which means D2 gets priority since she has an admissions ticket (albeit for SAT 2’s). The administrator addressed the crowd, “I’m sorry but College Board only sent us 7 extra tests for walk ins while in the past they sent us 50. Some of you won’t get to take the test today.” And this was at 7AM!!! While D2 seemed safe, it seems ridiculously unfair to reduce the usual number from 50 to 7. Let me repeat: I HATE THIS PROCESS!!!”

Gosh…everyone has been so busy! SAT yesterday is over that’s the best thing that D could say about it, but she thinks she did better on the math than last time. She came home…slept …started IB math IA and long papers that are due next week…oh and Physics IA…goodness this IB curriculum is nuts.

I know a lot of parents put pressure on their kids to do well in school but the story of the dumping a kid at the mall sounded harsh. Theremay be more to it than just academic pressure by the parents…perhaps parent was just reaching the end of his rope. I know I have been sorely tempted to just stop the car, dump the teen and drive into the sunset. My husband isn’t american and unaware of things like child/family services. When she was about 9, my D tried out being mouthy/rude (like she sees kids on tv behave but much less cute) to her father…he looked at her, said (in spanish)…“I am sorry, but you must be in the wrong house; you can’t be my daughter because daughters do not talk to their fathers that way”…He picked her up, put her out the front door and locked the door. The main problem was she was in pjs and it was snowing outside…she was let in pretty quickly but we did still use the “you must be in the wrong house” line as a cue to when kid is going beyond the acceptable in tone.

My daughter did the opposite: switched from taking SAT 1 to SAT II…but I had to call the college board to switch it over (I don’t remember the reason) and the woman told me that there were no seats for the SATII left at her HS…only for the SAT I…I ended up switching schools sites…drove 30 minutes away…because that same woman told me there would be a chance there would be no “walk in” spots…–it is a very frustrating system.

I wish I knew the “you must be in the wrong house” line a looooonngggg time ago! (my guess is it works best when started at a young age?) While I try to set limits…I think as the teens get older (I now have three) they just feed off of each other after a while…I just leave the room. I also tell myself, they will live with the choices they make, and hopefully learn from them!

Vitrac, welcome! This is a great forum!
Perazziman, you make me laugh. My D will NOT find the idea of the ACT ‘fun’ though I’ve been thinking she should try walking in too. I think she will refuse, wait for the SAT scores from yesterday, and then decide whether to take the ACT again in September.
Fine arts, that’s a great story. I love the line about the wrong house. : )
Need to bathe my horribly stinky Scotties. Ignoring it by doing laundry, emptying the dishwasher (but without the music and dancing since only the dogs and I are awake…) and watering plants. Today there is a pool party for small S’s soccer team. Mercifully his tryouts end tomorrow, then just the older two remain…D is all set, S14 is more difficult as he’s getting back into travel soccer after a two tear hiatus just playing high school. He’s far less stressed than I am though.

I love that the kids seem so much less stressed by the process than the parents. I guess that is one of the beauties of youth. S13 has 4 schools on his list; I have about 12. Hope we can compromise on 7 so that he has some safety schools & at least one financial safety school. Still hoping that he gets that even if he gets in to his reach school (CMU) we may not be able to afford it since I’ve heard (read on CC) very mixed results about financial aid from CMU.

As far as the Naviance issues: we, too, come from a relatively small high school so several top tier schools & the smaller schools do not show data on scattergrams for privacy reasons. In order to see your school history over the last 5 years, go into Naviance, & select the college name (not the scattergram). The college info will pop up & if you scroll down, you can see the 5 year history for your school listing by year the number of students who have applied, been admitted & how many actually accepted.

unfortunately, that isn’t showing up anymore either. It was there a few weeks ago, but now it’s gone. Only the national data is there for most schools now.
Given that naviance data averages 5 years, I don’t know how useful the national is?

At least your school is enrolled in Naviance… ours is not. Why am I not surprised? The GCs here seem to think that if you are planning on college, why would you even think about applying out of state?

I think I’m just grumpy today. Off in a bit to take DD13b for an audition.

Just got DD off to full day of Dance recital’s – she is an assistant teacher…so, she has to be there for all 3 (or 4?) recitals. We go tonight. While she was up late last night for the rehearsal (from after SAT II–10am-9pm), she was worried about all the homework she isnt getting done…said she’d never bring any to the recitals (I suggested there are some breaks in between…) – well, she actually packed her laptop and plug…“there’s wifi there…”…–apparently there is a group project due tomorrow…okay…only 2 1/2 more weeks…i think we will all make it!

My son is not stressed at all about applying to colleges! He’ll apply to 4 schools and cross his fingers that he gets into them. His first choice is University of Utah, second is Univesity of Colorado COlorado SPrings, third is Utah State University, and 4th is Weber. 3rd and 4th are true safeties and he has no desire to go to any of them. We toured Univ. of Utah and loved it…he has the stats to get in to both the unviersity and the school of engineering. He is even thinking about the Honors College…I;m still on the fence on that one.

He will take the ACT for the last time on Saturday…Hasn’t studied yet but made me a promise he would tomorrow.

Right now he’s all about summer. Playing tennis with his coach, hanging out with his best friend before he leaves on Wednesday, and planning four our foreign exchange student.

He has his moments tho…last night he woke me up at 1245am and told me he was taking the trash out! Really!!!

drmom123, “schooled out” is a great phrase. Summer should help them recuperate.

socialdrama, D currently has about 15 on her list, some she is serious about, others less so. The list will be reduced somewhat in the summer. Even so, she will only apply early to 2 (her ultimate safety and her #1) and will see about the others RD. If we do the same process as with S’12 she will write essays for all the colleges that she is interested in during the summer, to be polished in the fall.

Welcome, Vitrac!

Fineartsmajormom, I love the line about being in the wrong house!

SATs are done for now. Yeah! DD13 said she thought she did better on the Math and CR sections this time, but didn’t really like the essay question and thinks she will score lower on the Writing section this time. Her scores from March are good enough to get her into most, but not all, of the schools she’d like. However, her scores were probably not high enough to get the merit aid we need for her to attend. So, we shall see how she does, apply to the schools she likes, rely on our state school safety and go with it! We should get some financial aid for 3 years as we will have two kids in college at the same time.

DD13s list so far for either chem/environmental enginnering or chemistry:

WOW…missed a day and 4 pages to catch up on!!

Thank you to everyone who wished Jr well in his Track meet at UCLA.
He hit his (very conservative) time goal as this was his first race in 8 weeks since his injury. But most importantly…he did not come in DFL (Dead F@#$%@ Last)

UCLA has a beautiful campus…but still a bit too much blue for my taste They were working on a new athletic training center, which did peak Jrs interest a bit. Didn’t have enough time for a full tour, so I may need to set something up with TX5’s DS.

Ber: So sorry to hear that your ankle sprain kept you from touring Tulane. But good to hear that your D like it!

Walker: I feel your pain on the gym Was FINALLY able to get in a run yesterday AM before Jrs track meet…and man I am feeling it today.

SteveMA: Congratulations to your D!!! Woo-Hoo!!!

Wherenext: LOL…your D sounds like mine. She is so used to everyone driving her around, she really hasn’t put the effort into get her time behind the wheel. I had to let her know that Jr and I will not be “Benson” forever…

Vitrac: Welcome!! You will love this group :)

Fredrick: Thanks It really was a huge confidence booster going into his Track camp at Stanford coming up in July. He missed the cut-off for the next round of Jr Olympic time trials by .25. (He either had to win his heat or beat a set time. He came in 2nd.) And in an event that he really doesn’t even run…so he is pretty pumped right now.
