Parents of the HS Class of 2013

DD13 took the SAT this morning. Her comments…the math was easier, because it had more algebra and less geometry. She has been working with a tutor and used a couple of “tricks” for the reading, so thinks that went well. She thought the essay prompt was easier than last time…something about looking to past successes to help the future. Keeping my fingers crossed she might get a better score, because we have no plans to retake.

She didn’t take any SAT II tests and I am really hoping that I was correct that the schools she’s applying to don’t require it.

Tonight is a night for dh and I…he got tickets to Mary Poppins for me for Valentines Day and the night has finally arrived!

Hope that tests today went well for everyone!

good luck to all your SAT takers today. S13 took SAT II math last year & didn’t wan to take it again. Took Chem last month & did o.k. but had black belt test in karate this weekend, so…

Anyway, only one school (CMU) that he would like to attend requires SAT II’s & that is a real long shot, particularly b/c of finances.

We still have finals this week. S13 is in good shape but S15 is struggling. I’m starting to think I need to refocus my attention! :)

Hope everyone can enjoy the summer. When do we start working on college apps?

From reading CC, it seems that June Math 2 subject test has a generous curve, missing 8 questions for 800. Keeping my fingers crossed until June 21.

One of DD’s friends just stopped buy because she wanted to get photos with us and her in her gown for graduation…awwww.

I’m hoping D starts them this summer. It will make life so much easier next fall… We will have to see if that happens…

DD survived the SAT today - not sure how her score will be, but it’s done. She thinks that she did better on the CR than last time. She struggled to come up with literary references for the writing - this is where her year of “modified school” really hurt her. She used to be at the top of her class in English class, but it was a huge struggle for a while and she missed quite a bit.

1 more week of classes and then finals. Finally! We did a quick shopping trip today to pick up some things for summer camps/programs. DD has several trips back-to-back, starting the last day of school, so she needs to pack 3 different bags.

SteveMA, I love that story about pictures. :)

Enjoy the evening plans everyone!

ahhhhhhh…DD says her dance recital is going to be “5 hours long because everyone takes their own sweet time to change into thier costumes…” she is sooooo tired and hungry and overworked. I am not going to encourage her to do too much application-stuff over the summer (she’ll be away for most of it anyway) because she is just too-schooled out in my opinion. (yep, a new phrase for burned out over school)…have a good Saturday night.

Survived the dance recital. DD13b started dance 9 months ago. Somehow she was able to learn to some tap, ballet and a jazz dance. She has never taken dance before. I’m very impressed! She is an awesome tapper! The little kids cracked me up. I told my DH that one little girl really needed to take up golf or something else! Lol

SteveMA: that’s sweet! I’m going to be sad next year that my kids aren’t graduating with their middle school pals (we moved). It’s a great bunch of kids and I miss them. They have good friends here too, but somehow it’s different.

I hope everybody did well on the SAT and/or subject tests today! My DD13a said she omitted 7 and two were iffy answers. I’ll be happy if she gets over 700.

Thought I was off here for the night, but I’ve got a question now… I just went to look up a few schools on naviance. All of a sudden, the high school’s admissions data are not available for most of the schools DD is looking at. When you search the scattergrams, the graphs say “not available to protect student privacy.” Is this a change? It basically makes naviance useless now.

anniez, when it is a couple students who attend/admitted to a certain school, it appears like that to protect student privacy. It is frustating to see that, S has couple of schools he wants to check for which data set is not available.

DONIVRIAN, the stats for these schools were available the last time I checked, just a few weeks ago, but now they aren’t. For one school, I remember that they had 8 students, I don’t remember the others. We have a small high school so there aren’t that many entries for most schools outside of our state schools and a few other “go to” schools. So frustrating!

Hi everyone! So many exciting things happening for all of you and I can hardly keep up! Bernese Mtn - No SAT scores yet. We cancelled sending scores but we did not cancel scores. D only needed to raise her writing & she thinks she did well. I just hope that lower scores in M/ V are not so low that they make her good scores from Oct look like a fluke. She finished junior year with an unweighted 4.0 and she is only applying to schools in our state so she should be ok. How many schools are on your kids lists ?She is looking at six.

S is at ARML national event this weekend so last SAT will have to be in October.
GC has asked all juniors to give her a resume and a list of colleges before the end of school, which is this coming Wednesday. I think it will be a nervous few days. S is finishing a movie for his IB Film class which he is going also to use as his last assignment in AP Euro. It is a Fellini theme movie
Looks like he will get that internship at the movie/advertising company!

Social drama, I think D has 7 on the list. Three are in-state including her #1. One is a huge stretch for anyone (UNC) and she likes Delaware too so it’s in the running. Beyond that, I think she’s added two more in the past week but I’m not sure. She should be good for Delaware and two of the in-state schools. She’s also got a 4.0 UW and good rigor but the test scores are lower than she wants them to be. Her ECs are good and have a tight focus but a lot of aspects of the same thing so hopefully that’s good. Who knows… Our Naviance also shows that message when few have applied.

anniez, I noticed that when one student was accepted, it blanked out for schools that in the past I saw all rejected. Did you see any acceptance before?

Socialdrama - S has 17 on his list. He won’t apply to all but that is how many he is researching right now. There is only one sure thing on his list but he has put it at the bottom and if all else fails kinda thing. We really need more safety schools.

Thanks, SocialDramaMama. We will just wait for the May SAT AND the June SAT II. I am thinking Monday or Tuesday for the May SAT now.

D has 15 on her list. Just as CBGMass says, she will not apply to all 15, but she is looking at the you tube videos of the ones she has not visited. I am happy with 15 as the starting point this summer. I am hoping by the time school has started, she will be down to 8 or 10.

Omg… We don’t even have a list for either kid! So not ready for this. I do have a short list for LORs. Are there any stats or threads for kids of slacker parents?

Kelowna-The Fellini movie sounds great! I took a class Women in Italian Culture…and we watched Fellini films for a whole quarter, I loved it!

CBG- We have to love our safeties right? As long as here is at least one! 17 yikes.

D has 7 colleges to apply to, 3 reaches, 3 fits and 1 safety.

Walker, so cute the friend wanted pictures of the fam! I hope that will be D’s friends next year!

SAT Lit- D thought it was good. She liked the 1980’s piece of lit for variety. She had one question she left blank. Not much info. She just brought up the 80’s because of my recent music references thanks to this group! The Flash Dance wardrobe mentioned earlier cracked me up!

DH took S and D1 to SF for the night. I am home with a sleepover for D3. so fun to have to worry about how late they can jump on the trampoline instead of tests, studying etc…

Walker, we only have the list GC gave us. S has not looked at it, so we have not made any choices yet either, except for SUNYs.
