Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Congrats to all the NMSF here! None here, but we knew that coming out of our state, she didnt have a shot, so its all good.

Re courses, middle schoolers can take Algebra 1, Geometry and 1st year language, but they dont consider it hs/ doesnt go on a transcript.
The LOR story makes me nervous since DD didnt ask at the end of last year… I’m hoping that she’ll get in right away when school starts, but knowing my dd…
At the airport…squeezing in one more visit before school starts!

Shouldn’t it go to the Speaker of the House? Or was that the Secretary of State?

Seriously, I don’t think you’re being crazy but I bet they hold another election. That’s the safe thing to do. Otherwise you will have other students and parents complaining that if they knew Mr. ex-student would be disqualified they would have run themselves, or that so and so who ran for president was a friend of Mr. ex-student, and would have run for vp instead if they knew this was going to happen. Whether it’s true or not. You get the picture. OTOH, maybe it is too difficult to perform a do-over.

bover: VERY good points!! Right now, I am not saying a word as I don’t want to stir up trouble. Figured they would let Jr know if they want him to fill the post or not.
I appreciate the feed back :)

@MommyDearest13

Here the kids can take a lot of HS credits in MS. Algebra 1, Geometry, Earth Science or Biology, Spanish, French, Latin, German, Japanese (at 1 school), World Geography and some electives like Keyboarding, Art, etc.

D’13 entered HS with 7 credits from MS: 2 Math, 3 Language, 1 Science, 1 History. She will have 35 credits (24 required for advanced Diploma) by the time she graduates.

S’16 is starting 9th grade with 7 also: 2 Math, 1 Language, 1 Science, 1 History, 2 Technology electives.

I must be loosing it! I put both of my kids on a red eye from California to the east coast to take a college tour practically by themselves! We do know someone with whom they will stay, but they are doing most of it on their own! If that wasn’t crazy enough, my husband and I then proceeded to get on a plane to another country! I figure you have to let them learn on their own and they need to know that we trust them!

On a different note, can anyone give me any insight into Haverford College? DS is looking for an east coast safety with strong science and or premed.

S '13 got his official NMSF letter today as well. Even though school does not officially start until next Wednesday, he was in the guidance office for other business. Either they love him at this point or think he’s the biggest pest! Is Sept 5 the latest start date here?

Anyway, no point in posting on the NMSF tread…score will not be any help. But at least those notifications have made it to the West coast, so hang in there if you haven’t heard yet!

perazziman- Sorry about your outcome, but just make sure it is explained in the app. It worked out ok for D '10. I think colleges are used to looking at ridiculous ranking/grading systems, but it doesn’t hurt to have it broken down for them. I will say though, that the higher you get up towards the top, the more particular they seem to be about their numbers, I suppose because they can. Still, our D did much better in admissions than her numbers might have indicated…especially coming from a less than stellar HS. Document, and make your case and then go for it!

GreekMama:

Both of my children have had a strong interest in Haverford, especially after visiting.

The campus is on a quiet 300 acres in a well-kept Philadelphia suburb. The buildings are grey stone, subdued and personally-scaled, reflecting the Quaker heritage, and the campus has a restful balance of lawn and woods. Academically very selective, but not at the nose-bleed levels of Amherst, Williams, Pomona, and its cousin-school, Swarthmore.

Here are what I consider its distinctive features:
– Small, even for an LAC–1,200 students
– Access to a large metro area – not many LAC’s in the country have this feature
– A close relationship with sister school Bryn Mawr (a woman’s college), one mile away, to the degree that curriculum and schedules are coordinated and students flow freely between campuses. Haverford was one of the last eastern LAC’s to go co-ed (1980), partially because of their partnership with Bryn Mawr. But both schools have thrived ever since.
– Cross-registration privileges with Swarthmore and U Penn, although I understand that this can be more difficult to coordinate. A shuttle connects Swarthmore (20 minutes), Bryn Mawr, and Haverford who refer to themselves as the “tri-co”.
– A very strong emphasis on student community, including a pervasively observed Honor Code that, for example, allows take-home tests. Many resources, staff and student, are devoted to mediating and counseling meant to help with student self-governance. (This is probably the most distinctive feature and prospects either love it or hate it–especially the idea of being obligated to turn in cheaters.)
– Academically rigorous and well-respected with very strong biology programs.

Another fan of Haverford here. Great science. It’s a pretty intense place, as in, there are plenty of students studying, studying, studying! Collaborative more than competitive though, from what I know.
My friend keeps telling her kid to go over to villanova and lighten up a little. :)

Critter - my s doesn’t start until 9/7

Hey, iPeeps. I’ve been reading but crazy-busy and not posting.

Ds2 has bitten off more than he can chew. Already forgot about an officers’ meeting for one of the clubs for which he’s president. Doh! And the sponsor was one of the people he was asking to write a LOR. Argh. So now he doesn’t want to ask him. Meanwhile, while he vaciillates, time is ticking and his first LOR is due Sept. 28. I’m pulling my hair out. And still no word on NHRP or anything else.

In bigger news, in a half-hour I’m taking ds1 to the airport for a semester abroad. He’s so excited. And nervous. Me, too. On both counts.

In great news, first HS football game is tomorrow night. Can. Not. Wait.

I was actually asking where to find them on the college board website. Never found them, so I call the GC this morning. S just missed the mark by a few points. :frowning: But the GC asked how I found out the cutoff, she didn’t think they had published them in the newspaper. I told her I found out from here.

S2 seems to be enjoying first week of school. Likes all of his teachers. I’m having a hard time accepting that his science teacher (23 yrs old) went to HS with my older D. He was a senior when she was a sophomore. Now he’s returned to his alma mater to teach. S2 says that he and his friends have a hard time calling him Mr. X. Most of them have older sibs that are friends of his! I’m feeling old.

This is also the first year that S2 has had all male teachers (except for choir) since 5th grade.

If you tell any of my fellow UT Alumni I said this, I will deny it.

I am somewhat impressed with Alabama. First a top notch, organized acceptance package, then a letter from the President congratulating him and now a letter from the Dean of his college welcoming his to Bama and a note to call with any questions. I think I am getting excited about next Friday.

Galaxy: College Board and/or NMSC never publish the state level cutoffs. CC is one of the only places where you can find the data. Sorry that your GC didn’t have better news for you, but as you’re already finding out it’s certainly not the only way to find good merit aid. Hope you have a fantastic visit next Friday!

Very productive day today. Submitted bama’s scholarship app and part 1 of MIT’s app. :)

Yesterday evening I wrote my principal an email. My parents had previously drafted an email on the same topic to send to him, so I cut parts of that into my email and sent it off. Today, when my mom asked to see what I’d written, to my horror I realized that I left my parents email draft copied directly underneath my signature. :frowning: I’m pretty mortified right now, it’ll probably be a while til I have the courage to send any more emails. I guess I’ll send a follow up and try to make a joke of it…

Galaxyfigment: So far, Alabama has just done everything right. Less than 24 hours after I went on the UA website and signed D and I up for a campus tour, we received 2 emails and a phone call from the regional recruiter offering to set up an in-depth, personalized tour and to meet with D when the recruiter is here next month. We are planning a visit in October. Would love to hear your impressions from the visit.

reeinaz-

Wow! Isn’t 9/7 a Friday? I wonder how much they will get accomplished before the weekend?

I can’t remember who’s DD was looking at Art Therapy but I just found that Seton Hill in PA has a program with an emphasis on the counseling side (I think that is what they wanted). They have an UG and Master’s program.

Steve. Sounds like the trip is going well  and you have great weather
Keep us posted on any other good finds  and most of all… Have Fun :)

Critter - not only is it a Friday, it’s a half day…lmao. I don’t know what the school district was thinking.
