Lesley University in Cambridge, MA looks like it has a good art therapy program. If that school had my son’s major, it would definitely be on his list.

Just read our High School’s September Newsletter and yearbooks are $10.00 less if ordered before September 14th. I have two upcoming Seniors so I saved $20.00. Thought I’d share. Our High School uses jostens.

Year book - Daughter purchased one but has not taken any photo yet. I was wondering why should she pay for the yearbook.
Essays - Daughter has revised 2 essays for CA the second time. It seems decent to apply to a rolling admission college. But need more polishing for reach schools. I’m glad she started this process early. It seems to take times to polish it.

TGIF!!!
And you can’t pour the rum for me fast enough as it has been “one of those” weeks ;)

Happy to say that it looks like both kids will survive the first week of school.

Jr’s CA Essay still stands at approx 650 words, so he has some major editing to do over the weekend. His outlines for his “supplement” essays are pretty much mapped out, so they should go fairly quickly.
On an interesting note, since starting his CA he has been getting emails and mailers from those particular schools. They range from FA forms to residence life.

Rolling Admissions: I DID suggest this to Jr…and he just looked at me like I was out of my mind. Sigh Looks like I will be waiting until December for some kind of news.

MDMom - I read somewhere that colleges get notified when you add them on the CA.

The colleges must get notification, my daughter is also getting a lot of mail and email from the schools she has added on the CA.

As a test, I just added a school I’m positive my son hasn’t already been in contact with.

OK…that makes sense.

I promise you…I much smarter than this…it’s just been a very draining week…LOL

Hi all! Sitting outside the library at Rh0des, while D attends a class.
And the sun has come out! This is a school so different from any of the others on the list in some ways, but a typical LAC as well. One of the nicest campuses that I’ve seen anywhere. Really nice students. More geographically diverse than you might expect but limited other diversity. The community affords some other opportunities though. Very personal experience, from the admissions staff, coaches, the president even came into admissions to individually meet all the prospective students. Definitely staying on the list.

Lesley- I have a bff whose S just transferred there. Smart kid with LD, and Lesley is supposed to great at supporting LDs. He loved orientation and he is happy with the M/F ratio… lots of attractive girls. Great location in cambridge too.

Lesley - drove by it once and thought it was an unusual name for a college. The most unusual name I have heard was Paul Smith’s College. One of S’s classmates went there. Had to look it up, it is in the Adirondack State Park. Worst name I can think of for a school is Misericordia. The name would make me not want to go there!

I nominate Wartburg.

My son scheduled his first interview. It’s in a couple of weeks at Ursinus. It was via an online form so he didn’t have to call anyone…lol. Then later in the month, we are FINALLY making a visit to Lafayette. They have 3 days off in September for Jewish holidays. I’m trying to make use of the days he has off from school but want to avoid the college visit crowds that come with the national holidays. I’ll probably have him schedule his interview at Lafayette for election day because they have that day off also.

He’s gonna sit on his CA essays until he can get someone at school to read them so I’m going to get him started on the supplements to his EA schools to have those ready to go in October. Then he can focus on his REACH schools that are due January. I bought a mini whiteboard to go on the refrgerator to prominently post upcoming dates for stuff. I think it will help keep him from feeling caught off guard when I “remind” him of things that need to get done.

Just visited Pittsburgh’s campus and returned to the hotel with an acceptance for D. Super friendly admissions staff. 1-on1 with admissions rep. The campus is great. Great school spirit. Feel free to ask away if anyone has questions about our visit.

Amazhon - Wow! Congrats on your D’s acceptance to Pitt! My Step-D applied on Wednesday so we are crossing fingers here! Was she admitted after her 1 on 1 meeting? We visited over the summer but did a 1 on 1 with the Athletic Training staff instead of the Admissions reps. We loved the campus and the spirit as well!

Happy Labor Day Weekend to All. Family and I are gathered in Fort Worth, TX in celebration of Michigan’s big football game with Alabama. We are definitely not expected to win this game (Bama is the defending national champion,) but the Michigan faithful are here by the zillions so it will be an EVENT at the very least Lots of fun to walk around today and see Maize and Blue wherever we go! Go Blue!

Congrats amazhon!
D is feeling overwhelmed with too many choices. She has 4 schools that she really likes and another 2 or 3 that she likes, where she should get in and get at least some aid. Another 2 that she’ll apply to b/c her dad wants her to. That doesn’t seem like too many to me, especially since 2 are reaches. But I get it - D is a kid who’d rather find one school and commit to it, and not have to choose. If money wasn’t an issue, that would be easier…

Remember the movie Field of Dreams
Build it and they will come…
Ok
With acceptance the money will come
Your new mantra

And Congradts Amazhon!!!
And any others racking up those early acceptances :)

Amazhon–Did you see me driving in circles trying to figure out how in the HECK to get out of Pittsburgh today?? There are too many roads that run too close together that my GPS was having conipitions. What should have been about an hour and a half trip took about 2 and 1/2. Not a happy camper. Contrats on the acceptance!

Ok, tours today, first Seton Hill. What a beautiful campus. Greensburg is kind of an oddity. It feels like a town of about 200,000. The downtown area is HUGE, lots of museums, shops, etc.–real population is about 25,000 though. That is nice for kids looking for a smaller campus with access to an urban area though.

The campus itself is up the hill, a BIG hill, from downtown. The drive up to campus is a tree lined lane with what must be awesome sledding hills off to the side:D. The buildings are all old, old in a good way, lots of charm, amazing architecture, etc. The dining hall looks like it came out of a Midevil castle in England, very cool. School is small, about 1200 undergrads but they do have several graduate programs so the campus feels like about 4000-5000 size. Medical school on campus, possibility of doing UG in 3 years and moving right to the med school so you are done in 7. Great for a student with a lot of AP credits. AP credits in your major don’t “count” but they do transfer to elective credits so you can get some of those out of the way too. Science/Math are their strong points, beautiful facilities for those, especially with the med school and the PA program they have. I think there are about 10 masters programs.

VERY friendly campus, lots of people saying hi, helping us find our way, etc.

I’m going to call this a sleeper campus. It’s really a surprise academically. Classes were in session so we saw the kids in class, very engaged. Peeked in on one lecture hall, only saw 2 computers on facebook, the rest were on topic :D. There were about 60 kids in this lecture hall otherwise the rest of the classes were in the 20-30 range and smaller. Every student we talked to was very well spoken. Good diversity both racially and also just general student population but most of the kids appeared to be from pretty well off families, not super rich but upper middle class kids, very down to earth kids too. It was a good mix of the nerdy, jock, preppy, cheerleader, etc. groups too. I would say that the student body here is VERY similar to what we saw at Truman. Average GPA for last year’s incoming freshman was 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, so not tippy top but good, solid kids.

Merit money is broken down into GPA, test scores so you get some merit aid for just your GPA, some for your test scores (automatic) and some other opportunities for competitive aid to stack on top of that. COA is about $39,000, merit aid starts at about $5000 up to full tuition.

Lot’s of activities on campus and around campus. They have a white water rafting trip coming up–cost $5 for students. They have regular trips into Washington, DC, cost $5 for students, $15 for guests–bargain!! They bring in a lot of outside entertainment, comedians, bands, speakers, etc. They have regularly scheduled trips to Walmart too Cars are allowed on campus and NO fee.

Oh, back to the med school, automatic admit for UG students that have a 3.5 or better and a 25 or better on the MCAT.

This school goes on the “A” list for the kids.

Second school was Robert Morris in Pitt (suburb of Pitt really). Very different campus, very open, surrounded by trees but not a lot of trees through campus. Buildings were new or newly remodeled except for the dorms–they were dorms, nothing exciting. Facilities are beautiful. The new building for their business department is AMAZING. They are clearing land for a new science center too. School leans more toward the business side but still strong in the sciences, associated with 2 med schools with auto admit similar to Seton Hill. The kids were lukewarm about the school. Academically I think it is fine, up there with most of the schools they like but as they said as we were walking out “it’s almost too perfect”. I think they tend to lean more toward the older looking campuses. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the appearance, just different. If you have a child interested in anything business, well worth a look. The list of doners for that business building is pretty impressive and turns into internships!

Again, very good merit aid, automatic, for GPA/ACT/SAT, up to $17,000 automatic, more competitively. COA $36,000. Division 1 sports but didn’t feel like a “jock” school but it sounds like sporting events are well attended.

I’m wiped out :D.

Steve that was Great!
I’m wiped out reading it:)
Get rest
