Parents of the HS Class of 2013

MommyDearest13: yes, it is a magnet school. Believe it or not, there are folks who complain about the numbers of NMSF – they believe it should be higher!!! They will compare the numbers from last year and point to how the school is lowering their standards (they had 156 NMSF last year). The expectations are just ridiculous!

The GC is right. At the top tier schools they DO keep a record of parent calls and they do hold it against them. The FA office is a little different since most kids are not privy to money matters. So word of advice. Don’t Call  and if you email send it from their acct…
The same thing was told to the parents at the mtg in jr year …
And I had that validated to me at several schools when I asked the office manager in a non challant way.

Thank you Swizzle.
AMA308: so, how does one go about scheduling interviews, when the parent is the driver, and has to take time off from work, and the hours of school prohibit DD to call for the information–the schools she could email, she did.
I have not given my name—or hers, for that matter…do they read caller ID? so, if I’ve called from work, differrent name on that one…?? I am not making the appointments, I am just trying to understand the schedule…so I can then talk to DD about what dates would work for me…I would think that is better than she say to the Admin on the phone “oh, can you hold on so i can check that out with my Mom?”… It drives me nuts that these schools play these games; I’d bet that when it comes to their looking at colleges for their kids, they can just call up…no? oh, I forgot, most of these Admins are about 10 years older than DD!— yup, just needing to Vent. sorry.

on the “parents should never call” thing… I do think it depends on the school, and I think the entire thing is arbitrary and stupid, for exactly the reasons that drmom said. I also think that there’s a difference between calling the admissions rep to ask questions, and calling to schedule a visit. But what do I know? Apparantly there are lots of rules in this game that I find silly…

But if this helps at all, an article from a few years ago:
[Pestering Parents: The Admissions Office Perspective - NYTimes.com](Pestering Parents: The Admissions Office Perspective - The New York Times)

Im sorry if I offended. But they want the kids to figure it out and make it work. Give her a bunch of dates that work for you and let her take the ball.

I have and will continue to call on behalf of my son. Heck, I even e-mailed Bama this summer setting up his visit schedule. I don’t think it “ruins” chances. I’m not interviewing for the kid. I do prefaces the calls by saying I am calling on his behalf because his school and sports schedule prohibit him from calling himself. This summer, I prefaced the e-mail by stating he was volunteering in a region without cell/internet service and I needed to get the airfare, etc set-up.

If a counselor is saying the student should make calls themselves, is the counselor permitting the student to come in and call from the counselor’s office?

Great link, Annie. I think drmom should show it to her D so she can rest easy!

I make my S do it all, but if it required a lot of coordination on my part and it couldn’t be done in an email, I’d call. I did have to contact his GC this week after S struck out twice regarding transcripts.

Got my scholarship offer from bama. Presidential right now, hopefully it’ll get updated to the NMF by march!

AMA308: not offended. Just frustrated by this whole process. I can see by that NYtimes article that there are other frustrated parents and even admissions officers. I really think it is just nutty-out-there with regards to this process. It was not like that when I was applying! And I did write all my thank you letters

ditto what drmom said - not offended at all - (really appreciate all the information, and hope I didn’t offend anyone either ;)) but I’m frustrated by it all too. :)

I’m on the frustration train too! I tried really hard not to get involved, but I thought 5 weeks and two inquiries were enough. Now I see Napalms scholarship, I wish I would have intervened sooner! Congrats, Napalm! Hopefully Bama will get S’s transcript next week so he can get his acceptance/scholarship award soon!

GreekMana- you have a lot more fees than we have. I wouldn’t spend $2000 I didn’t have to either (no matter how superstitious I am about these things). For your sake, I really hope they get into their ED choices!

Congrats napalm! S also received his presidential scholarship offer from Alabama today.

Congratulations to all the scholarship awardees! Very exciting. :)

Okay…I’ve called for my DS a couple of times. It’s really hard for him to call the admissions office when he’s in school till 3:30 and they close at 4:00.

DS just left for Homecoming Dance and Lock In…they won their football game 56-8!!! Sad to see that this is his last HS Homecoming :frowning: Lots of lasts coming up…

Napalm - Congrats!

My son hasn’t gotten any scholarship info yet from Bama. I will sleep easier when he does and when he gets his Honors/UF scholarships completed.

D got her scholarship letter from Alabama as well. Napalm, you’ll get a another letter explaining what your scholarship will be if you make NMF; then in March after it’s “official” you’ll get the letter telling you that too.

I’m sorry so many of the kiddos are stressed. D’s not doing too bad; she has a busy for her weekend (she does not have the crazy sports/theatre schedule that so many here have) but quite a few fun things built in. Don’t think she’s been up past 11 yet.

She already got her first progress report: senior year is 1/8 done!

DD and I were just sitting down talking about how next year at this time…

ack! la la la la la… I’m not listening… LOL

good night all. :)

Extremely happy for all the kids - it seems like everyone has the presidential scholarship from Alabama! Gives them a great option for college. :)
