GreekMana- I’m looking at the cost of sending the other applications and SAT scores as “insurance” or bringing the umbrella so that it won’t rain. But you could always have your kids ask the college office what to do about that - I’m sure they get this question 50 times each year.

My D has a TON of homework for BC Calc. Not 6 hours, but 2-3 regularly. Half the class took AB last year and the other half pre-calc. The pre-calc kids are at a disadvantage in her class.

Paul McCartney is going to be in two cities in the US thus far - St. Louis and Houston, and in Vancouver and Edmonton (2 shows). Not sure how he picked STL and Houston, but I don’t care :)

I think I need to clarify - our D’s hs listed the 6 girls as National Merit Semifinalists…which I listed as NMSF. So, not sure if it really means commended instead, since it doesn’t say “finalist”? Didn’t mean to mislead - perhaps someone can clarify for me?

D will have her common app essay completed Sunday - my deadline. I’m concerned that it is about 550 words, so it’s over. She’s not sure what she could take out, and I agree. Bummer. I remember discussions about following directions, and so on. One of her English teachers is going to review it next week, and she has been on an adcomm before…maybe she can provide guidance.

Our D doesn’t have any AP classes, thankfully, I’m thinking! 2-3 hours of AP Calc BC per night?? Wow!

I’m shocked that a school would allow a student to take bc calc without ab…our school won’t even let you take bc unless you got a 4 on the ab ap test…it amazes me how each school differs in it’s teaching of the same subject…I hope the kids without ab calc get tutors…or switch to ab…the test is no joke in bc…or ab for that matter…and a poor grade doesn’t look good on the transcript…

SteveMA-- both only one restrictive EA. Unfortunately for me, not the same one. I think one has a decent chance to get in, the other is aiming for his highest reach dream school, but he wants to go for it. So if they send in the regular decision applications, but the transcripts get there after Jan. 1, is that ok? If necessary, we would just request them the day they go back to school in January.

Carla2012-- my sons will have everything ready to go on the regular decision apps, but once they get word on Dec. 15, we won’t push the button unless we have to! It’s close to $2000 more that I would have to spend (granted, I have 2 kids) to send in all of those applications! Why would you go ahead and send them in before you knew for sure? Am I missing something? TIA.

Based on last year’s experience with D’s then-senior friends, EA/EDs very often hear a little sooner than Dec. 15–look back at CC threads from last year for the schools you are considering --many come out right around Dec. 7-10 time frame. I would think you would forestall paying the additional application and transcript fees for RD schools until you hear from the EA/ED. We will do that for D’s RD choices, except University of California schools because the deadline is Nov. 30. She will not know EA/ED by then.

They announced all the NMSF at our school – 146 made the cut – DS missed by 2 points.

I missed the Senior Night presentation by the GCs since I had to be at my Back to School Night (meeting and greeting the parents). They sent out a survey for feedback on their presentation unfortunately I could only answer one question – did you attend? LOL!!!

146 NMSF?! In one school? Holy crow! Our entire district of 7 high schools announced the highest # of NMSF’s ever, and that was 36 total. 2 High schools had 13 each, 1 HS had 4. 1 HS had 3 and 3 HS’s had 1 each.

Our2girls: NMSF’s are announced in September; they announce who makes it to Finalist in February.

our2girls - you have to be a senior to be NMSF. MTNEst - how many seniors are in your class - that is an amazing number - I would think that might be NMSF and Commended?

I know my dd is commended and she has not been notified or recognized - I am a little upset. She found out she didn’t make it by seeing the list in the paper - kind of feel like the school should have notified all the NMSF and Commended before the local paper announced - oh well - she was upset for one day and yesterday didn’t mention it so I guess she is OK - as long as she is OK this momma bear will not be upset!!!

Calc BC - at dd’s school you go straight from Pre-Calc to Calc AB or Calc BC depending on what your teacher recommends. The first semester of BC is essentially AB (or at least that is how it is described - so basically the class is twice as fast in BC)

So, my DD came home from school totally anxious. Apparently different GC spoke to different groups of kids (so not necessarily her GC) and told the kids : “if your parents make any phone calls for you or do anything for you in the process of applying, it will ruin your chances of getting into college”—and “you can only have two recommendations tops besides the GC. You should not get one from your coach or anyone else”. of course, because it is coming from him/her (whoever it was, she wont tell me which one), she believes it. I do know (and I hear Swizzle’s summertime admonishion in my head) that I have to let her “own” the process…and SHE IS…she has called for interviews etc. BUT, I have called a couple of schools, while she is in school, just to get ideas of when they have interviews available, so I can arrange my work schedule…then DD calls after we look over the calendar. DD now says “You’ve ruined my chances, because you called the school just to find out that information!”. I know she’s freaking out and worried; but I cannot believer that could ruin her chances!!!

Greekmom–$2000    I was grumbling about the $66 I had to pay this morning to send ACT scores because our school doesn’t include them on their transcripts. HOLY COW!!! We did pay $75 for one app and $44 for the other, the rest were free.

Nope, it is 146 for just our high school and 229 for the entire county. They sent out a news release announcing it (listing each high school and the names of the students).

The senior class is down to approx. 450 students – each class starts with a maximum of 480 students.

I don’t know how many are commended but I would assume the majority of the remaining students are in that category.

For AP Calc. – students can go to Calc BC if they had a B+ or A in PreCalc. It is the student’s choice if they want to do Calc AB or Calc BC.

MTnest I was reading that and I said out loud Holy ***** and my son turned around to see what I was reading. Is that some sort of school for gifted students?

Our2girls I looked up the McCartney tour after you posted how lucky that hes playing in STL!

GreekMana my thoughts are . . . too bad for them! At $10 a pop, theyre definitely making money. @@ If you feel like being nice, you could call them and let them know the situation just to give them a heads up that you might have a large request on 12/17 they should understand the cost factor. You might want to look at when last years results came out for those particular schools.

Ahsmuoh S13 will be commended too, but no word from the school. I only know theres no NMSF since I saw the Ohio list on CC.

AMA - I wish our school offered Calc BC. My S and his math genius buddies are bored to tears in AB. He said it moves at a snails pace. Kids going from precalc in HS to Calc I/II in college are essentially going from precalc to Calc BC, so I dont see why itd be necessary to take AB before BC. Its actually redundant.

Steve I totaled application fees for S13 - $645 apps, $143 ACT scores, $130 SAT scores, $73 common app fees, $30 in college transcripts, plus profile fees later on. $1021+ for one applying to 13 schools. At least our high school and two of the colleges dont charge for transcripts . . . then again, they dont seem to want to mail them either!

I don’t even want to really think about the $$ of the application process but just as a brief idea: $75-$100 per app x 10-12 schools x 2 kids. Approx 12 x $10 SAT to each school (a few less thanks to the 4 free x 2) and 20 x $10 for transcripts. Really hoping that something comes through on the EA so that we don’t have to go through with all of this! If S1 gets in EA he’s done! No questions asked–happy dance! If S2 gets in EA he would probably only apply to 3 additional schools to special programs (BA/MD, PLME). But we are talking lots of LUCK here!!!

I am still curious on my previous question. RD is it ok if the transcripts arrive after the Jan. 1 deadline?

Trying to avoid extra fees if they end up not being necessary-- I am guessing that I still need to bite the bullet and go ahead and order the SAT scores to all of the schools anyway, because if we end up needing them, the request needs to be in quite a bit in advance, right?

I would check each schools timeline before making this assumption for each school, but Princeton, for example, says POSTMARKED by Jan 1 for LORS and secondary report. I’m sure your school will still be closed for break, so looks like you’d need them sent before break.

First off, I received awesome news! I’m an official ambassador for hercampus.com. I’d love to go into detail, but I can’t right now. It’s an awesome website. I would definitely point your teenage daughter in its direction. It has so much helpful advice for college and just life in general! There was only a few of applicants selected from a really large international pool! I’m so happy! AHHHH (((:

@drmom Oh jeeze! I feel so bad haha I don’t like when guidance counselors do that at all! Today my best friend decided that it was in her best interest (for health reasons, she kept having panic attacks because of the class) to drop AP Physics from her schedule and take a different AP science course instead. She’s taken three years of honors science classes (two with labs) and AP Bio, and now she’s taking a different AP science course. She knows that she should take physics, but it was either AP physics or no physics, and after spending two weeks in physics, she had to drop because of her anxiety with it. The guidance counselors and teachers proceeded to tell her that she just ruined all of her chances of getting into a 4 year school. She then proceeded to bawl her eyes out in the bathroom to me during lunch. They’re totally wrong. My best friend is in the top 10% of the class and is involved in so much. She’s going to go to a four year school. I just don’t understand why they had to tell her this AFTER they all okayed the decision. Ugh. //Rant over// But really, it’s totally understandable that you did those things for your daughter.

I think that all of these differing opinions from guidance counselors and teachers and parents and friends are really making this whole process really hard on us. In the past three days I have heard exactly five different ways I should go about my college process. I trust my gut and doing what I think is right. I’ve done my research, I know what to do. I think that as students, we just need teachers and GCs to get out of our faces right now.

Now I must head off to my last, first varsity football game with my friends! eeep!
