Ugadog: why on earth would they punish such a dedicated team-member?? How crazy!!! Has anyone ever confronted him directly about the issue? Although, I doubt with someone like that it would make a difference. :(

I’m sorry you have to deal with that. There are crazy characters throughout the theater community and in most jobs. Just usually not thus crazy. Good luck … I recommend lots of yoga.

Good morning! uga, I’m sorry that your D has to deal with that. I’ve already started my mantra - “one more year, just get through one more year…”

Went to back to school night - it’s going to be a HARD year!

Kudos to all our kids for all they do - I really think it’s harder to be 17/18 now than it was when we were that age.

UgaDog99: I am so sorry your daughter is going through that! I think in every “field” there is that “group think” mentality. It is great that she got to see other Directors can be different. If she learns to have a thicker skin, and learns to “work” for the sake of “the work” rather than the personalily and a “being liked” by either the director or the group—that will be the best Life Lesson Learned.

anniezz–I agree. I remember junior year as being the killer year but senior year was kind of easy. While the kids had a lot to do last year, I think this year is going to be a lot more work.

Steve, I agree. So far D seems utterly slammed. She’s got more AP classes so that’s part of it, and her soccer team is very intense now. She must be a little ahead though because yesterday she was either going to meltdown at home or go hang with her friends, and wisely chose to ‘hang’. she ‘pinky-promised’ we will look at applications AT LAST tomorrow ( I need to grocery shop before they starve, and clean the house before the health dept shows up, but hey- college apps it will be!). Maybe once everything is submitted for colleges and they get the hang of expectations from this year’s teachers it will settle for them?

ugadog - Hate the drama “drama”. The dept. head for my kid’s theatre magnet is a total egomaniac who also picks favorites and scapegoats. I think it’s a theatre thing. He taught directing to the juniors last year and just about ruined them all for theatre. But S and his friends hung in there - tried to look at the big picture. This too will pass and, I suppose, its a good learning experience. But it sure stinks when it happens to you or your child. Hugs to your D.

Do the schools your kids are applying to have some kind of online site where you can check the status of their applications? We have Naviance and that information is supposed to be in there but I don’t see that the GC has sent anything off for either kid yet and I don’t know if that information automatically updates for Common App applications or what. Time crunch for DD and I just want it done!! :D.

We have Meet the Teacher night next week and you all are making me nervous about how hard it will be. So far my dd has not been stressed about school - and she did schedule a hard schedule (against my advice!).

ugadog - that sounds like a crappy situation for your dd - we often say “what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger” when our kids are feeling like they are getting unnecessary bad karma!!!

Checking in really quick. Ugadog I feel your pain! S2 had the same situation, but in basketball, which was his passion. It broke my heart!! S3 decided against doing drama this year, because of all the “drama”.

Ugadog…sorry that is happening to your D…theatre is a cut throat biz and one that requires assertiveness…I suggest that she stand up to him…nicely and professionally…either that or get involved with another group…if this person is so insecure that he has to belittle students that have poured blood sweat and tears into the program…he isn’t a very good Teacher…and she should stand up to him…believe it or not he will respect her for it and if he doesn’t she should quit…and make sure the principal knows why…

Ugadog - that’s stinks. You’d think that an adult would be better than that. Hopefully your D will be able to weather the year and come out ready for anything.

Our D’s school has 6 NMSFs in their class of 155 or so. Not our D, but that’s cool.

Quick cheer for me and my fam - I bought reasonable ($70 each +/-) tickets for Paul McCartney for the four of us…side stage, which is better than behind stage, I guess. I also went online and was able to get two more for the same price per ticket…and the show sold out in 40 minutes! Our younger D has been a huge Beatles fan since she was 4, so pretty excited about going :)

Ugadog hes probably a broadway reject that gets jealous of anyone with some potential. I can see my young D going the theater route maybe I should steer her in another direction!

Steve several schools show the items needed and when they are received. S has only applied to one common app school Im not sure how were supposed to know if they received test scores and college transcripts.

Ahsmuoh did you see the tOSU cut their Eminence scholarship from 50 last year to only 25 this year? Bummer!

So far, S13s schedule seems way easier than last year even with 4 APS, 1 DE, 1 H, and 1 regular. He said AP Calc, AP Chem, and DE Spanish are review for him. AP Lit is the most time consuming. Next week, his ECs kick into high gear so hell have a lot less time. I tried to warn him to get more of the app stuff out of the way . . . hell figure out too late. Oh well.

No NMSFs at our school this year there were 2 last year. Dont know if any other kids will be commended.

Paul McCartney is touring U.S.? My kids would LOVE that especially my D, she loves the Beatles especially Paul!

Mommydearest - yes I saw that about the Eminence- but they increased the one below from $3500 to $5000. So they must be going after the masses!

We had 7 NMSF in our school - DD missed it by one point!!! I would guess that we will have 10+ commended-does anyone know when that comes out officially? I know the number is 200 but the letter we got in the spring said they would be notified. Since DD only missed NMSF by one point we know she is commended - not that it means much!

Ugadogs, lots of sympathy here. There is a coach at D’s school known for that sort of thing. I will never understand the rationale (maybe there is not one… not sure how anyone could justify it to themselves if they actually recognize that they are doing this). Hate to see things going wrong for them this year. There is so much pressure and stress that I would like the rest to be FUN.
MommyDearest, can your S tutor mine in AP chem? I did NOT want him to take it but he loved the regular chem class last year so I agreed… not sure that was a good idea; he’s been complaining that he is “dying” in there… Every time I stop myself from helicoptering too much, I regret it. Sometime that is going to need to change.

Be careful standing up to this egotistic twerp. I stood up to this type of teacher my senior year. He was a spring semester pol sci class. I went from an A the first 9 weeks to an F the second 9 weeks. The final was all written essays. I compared mine to someone who got a B and mine had more fact and examples. Mine was well thought out paragraphs, hers were short answers My mom complained to the school board and was told it was practically impossible to change a grade. I did notice he was no longer with the school the next year. Luckily my college only wanted proof I graduated and not another transcript.

Just a warning for a class where grades are subjective

Need some strategy help here on transcripts. Our school charges $10 per official transcript!!! Both of my sons are applying EA to one school and then have about 10-12 more schools for regular decision. If they get in early they won’t even bother with the rest-- because of winter holidays, it looks like I have to go ahead an order all of them and pay for all of them whether or not they will end up sending in those other apps. Really!?! That’s $220! Yikes. Any ideas. Our last day before the holiday is 12/21. If I make requests on 12/17 (Monday after the 12/15 EA notices) they will go nuts!

On another topic, how many hours a night do your kids study for Calculus BC? My sons are averaging 2-3 hours a night!!! Last night it was 6! But I imagine that was two nights rolled into one. I’m really worried about their ability to get everything done for their other classes. They love math, so they aren’t complaining, but geeze!

How many EA schools are they applying to? I would have them send in their applications as that is the “date” schools use for applying but if they get in EA, don’t bother sending out the transcripts, etc. They could send the applications in early December and then wait until after Christmas to send transcripts if needed.

Our kids haven’t had that much work in BC yet-maybe 30 minutes/night or so. They haven’t had much graded yet, 2 weeks of homework and one quiz but they both have 100% in there so far (20 point quiz is all).
