<p>The Mystery of the Missing Transcripts has been solved . . . the HS finally realized they never sent them! They were requested FIVE weeks ago. UGH!</p>

<p>Just wanted to get on here to vent. Is our kid the only one or does it seem like EVERYTHING is happening at the same time? Back to school nights, club meetings, heavy homework loads, and last minute college information sessions and visits to squeeze in? I mean if kid has to demonstrate interest and has to show up to meet and greet, then it’s more time away from actually working on the apps! Not sure if your schools actually EXPLAIN naviance and common app and how to ask teachers for LORs, etc. Kid just trying to get all the forms such as brag sheets, activity sheets, and resume input, but why, oh why, did no one from the school tell these guys to start looking at this paperwork ahead of time?!! I thought things were sort of planned out, but the whole timetable has been shot out the window b/c we were unaware of these finer points regarding the process and how it is handled by the high school itself. They’re insisting all paperwork be in two weeks before deadlines which is fine and dandy, but a little heads up before Sept would’ve helped. This greatly compresses the period kid thought they’d have to work with and now feeling like we’ve been putting post its and reminders all over the calendars. How many calendars to keep everything in one place (college stuff, ongoing activities stuff, regular high school class stuff), KWIM? Applying to colleges is a class in and of itself.
One more thing, our naviance teacher rec forms and common app teacher rec forms are different. Does this matter? Is kid supposed to ask for both types to be completed by the teacher?

<p>No real news here. S3’s biggest distraction, S2 finally goes back to college next week. He goes to a quarter school, and they don’t start until 9/27. He is living in an apartment this year, which since he doesn’t know how to cook, will be interesting. In week 2 of senior year the workload is picking up. He had a race yesterday, and another one on Saturday. </p>

<p>Hi, all. As predicted, ds, who earlier this week complained of being sooooo tired, woke up unnecessarily early to have breakfast with friends. :rolleyes: My sympathy wanes …</p>
<p>He went to a college presentation last night, one of those group ones. He got there early, schmoozed with the rep of the school he was interested in, stayed long enough to see that school’s presentation, then left. He’s got this down. ;)</p>
<p>Football tonight, and it’s raining. Turf field so I don’t think it’ll be canceled. Fun.</p>
<p>Common app question-I just checked DD’s common app site. 3 of her 4 apps on there say “downloaded” and one says “submitted” . Does that mean those 3 schools downloaded her app and are “reviewing” it?</p>
<p>Sort of, Steve. It means they’ve “captured” it but no guarantee that they’re looking at it yet.</p>
<p>S has only submitted one common school…i noticed today that it said downloaded too. I figured it meant they will put it in a pile for review. One teacher just put the lor in today, so it wasnt downloaded…wonder how that works.</p>
<p>MommyDearest13–they put it in their “file” and once they get everything, they review it is how I understand it–at least that is what all the ad comms said in their emails when we were emailing test scores over the past couple days :D.</p>

<p>Back to school night here. I have to go, right? (there’s nothing special for seniors/ no college planning info.)</p>
<p>DS is back at school, and even though he barely interacts with me anyway, the house feels so quiet with him gone! I can’t imagine how it’s going to feel a year from now!</p>
<p>sahp, I feel like there’s too much going on at once too. This may not be academically appropriate, but I wish the teachers would ease up on the work for the first few months so that a) kids can get all the college stuff done and 2) they don’t have to stress too much about the mid-year grade reports! It’ll all get done - just not according to the time-line that we had in our heads, I suspect.</p>
<p>anniezz–we missed back to school night this year. I like going just to connect with the kids’ teachers but we can do that at conferences too but we were working at a fundraiser instead–would have rather gone to back to school night :D.</p>
<p>This is why I pushed the kids to get everything done before school got started. I knew it would be busy, busy, busy. They still have to start applications for scholarships too. I’ve noticed a lot more homework for them this year already…so have they.</p>
<p>S got an invitation to a “program” that will lead to eligibility for a scholarship at one of our state schools. One that he wasn’t going to apply to. He said he was interested in going and so another school will be added to the list. I think I’ll drop the state school that was a commuting option because if that’s his only choice come April, I think community college will be better choice for him.</p>
<p>Feel better after meeting with DS and his GC today. Obviously many people on here are much more familiar with Naviance than I am (I will be all ready for my DD in 2years!). Think it is pretty cool that the teachers just download the LORs and the GC sends off the transcripts and LORs to the colleges. My son said he has asked 1 teacher to write a LOR for him but he hasn’t asked a 2nd one yet but he knows who he wants to ask.</p>
<p>Guess I can relax a little bit.</p>
<p>I know exactly what I want to put in my commonapp essay. It finally came to me when I was doing Rensselaer’s app and it was phrased as a “personal statement.” I have a VERY rough draft of about 3/4 of it so far. One question though, do you think it’s taboo to mention studying for standardized tests? I want to use it as a small supporting example, it wouldn’t be a big part of course just like 1-2 sentences.</p>
<p>Had our theatre magnet parents meeting tonight. Love, love, love S2’s new theatre teacher. He’s officially the lead teacher for the theatre tech magnet, but he’s also teaching the senior acting class. He seems to genuinely care about the kids and they love him. Wonderful, because the seniors were all fed up with the dept. chair, who taught them last year. S2 seems to like all of his teachers this year, maybe with the exception of his government teacher who is an arch-conservative and can’t help expressing his opinions in class!</p>
<p>I thanked our counselor & registrar today when I stopped by the school. They’re so good with getting transcripts out within a day or two; usually we’re on the early end of things before they get swamped, but I know they bust their tushies when kids are under the gun too. I don’t think they get too many thank you’s based on their response, but after reading some of y’alls travails I had to let them know. And I let the administrator I saw know that as well.</p>
<p>So, our GC said the school wants everything to go via Naviance----but we also have to fill out all the paper forms they used to use—“just in case”…We also have to give them 2 weeks notice for transcripts and things. My DD still has one more teacher to ask about LOR. Okay, I need to do some Yoga or something, or I am going to have a stroke! too much stress, and I am not the one doing this!</p>
<p>I just need to vent a bit. My DD has put her heart and soul into her theatre department since the first month of her freshman year. I busted my rear end as parent and booster officer until the last two months of last year. (Issues that I could no longer ignore made me stop participation.) My daughter is the ONLY senior who has participated in every opportunity for all three years and is the only one planning on a tech major (only 3 students total are pursuing theatre after high school). Each year the director targets a student to be “that” kid he ignores and essentially “punishes” for being the most dedicated to the troupe and to theatre, in general. Well guess who gets it this year? (Actually, it started in February last year and has just increased.) This is a small department, small group of core kids that do everything, but the director is so full of himself. He thinks he and his department are so much bigger than they are. I have tried (as have others who have already graduated) to get my daughter to see that this director and this “drama club” do not equate to theatre in the big world. Granted, things like this will happen everywhere, and I suppose we can look at it as a learning experience. But good grief, I’m so tired of her crying every day because of what has gone on at drama. Thankfully, she got to do a show with a different company this summer and a different director. So, she has seen (at least for a little while) that it can be better once she gets out of high school. Sigh…just a few more months.</p>
<p>SteveMA: I’m sure Naviance is a great tool! My fear was they wouldn’t be able to handle the program. LOL!

<p>YDS: somehow they always have time to go to breakfast/dinner with their friends. D doesn’t have late entry days, but thru always go out to lunch or to the beach on early release days. LOL!</p>
<p>ugadog99-is there another theater where she can volunteer her time and just bypass the school stuff? I really doesn’t sound worth the effort for that director.</p>
