Galaxy: I’m not sure about the UA scholarship decision flow; it’s all stats based at this point. As long as they have the official test scores & a transcript that should be enough. D2 has completed the scholarship & honors app, but only last Friday night (9/7) letter is dated 9/12 (Wednesday.)

ugadog: please don’t blame yourself for the theater dude’s inexcusable behavior. Being “involved” is a good thing. It’s his issue, not a result of something you’ve done. So sorry that you’re dealing with that.

D2 had at least one school ask what other schools she was looking at, maybe more. I told her to list them all. She has nothing to hide. If seeing some particular school on her list affects the voodoo admissions calculus at another school, so be it.

Also, my school redid class rank just recently, which is good because I moved up a couple spots but bad because I have to resend all my transcripts…

ugadog, so sorry your D has to deal with that.

Galaxy: You do not need to apply to the honors college or fellows program before the presidents scholarship is awarded for alabama. S has not submitted his honors college app yet. Alabama is very proactive with the information you put on the application- S already has 21 credit hours on his mybama transcript from his AP tests.

ugadog: S2’s basketball coach picked on the kids with the involved parents too. I know that the coach came from a family that wasn’t involved, so I always kind of thought that might have something to do with it.

Where do you find the UA honors college app? S did the scholarship app, but i dont think he did the honors app. Swimkids, did you have official ap scores sent to UA?

As far as Finanical Aid and Early Action, I was surprised to recently learn through Northeastern’s website that they require the CSS Profile to be completed by Dec 1 for Early Action applicants and that they give their financial aid award with their acceptance letters for Early Action Applicants. This information was not on their “Application Checklist” that we have been using to be sure everything gets completed.

Congrats to everyone that had good news to share! And…thanks for the continued support.

Director is at it again today. My daughter is lighting tech for the fall show. This is production week. Rehearsal began at 5:00 today. She arrived at 4:45 and he was there with an ACTOR working on lights. Never mentioned it to my daughter and never asked her to come up to the booth to help. My disdain for this man grows DAILY! I just keep saying: February, February, February, but I don’t know if either of us will make it that long! :(

Just got home from my MIT interview. Overall it went fine, I didn’t connect with my interviewer that much and it wasn’t really like a conversation, he just went down a list of questions. It wasn’t bad though. There were a few oddball questions, like “How will your MIT education benefit (the name of my small town)?” I didn’t think it would be prudent to tell him that I can’t wait to get out of this town and I’ll probably never come back after college, so I sort of muttered something vague… I definitely don’t think it hurt my app overall though which was the main goal.

I have to turn in a college essay Monday for english, I’m going to try to polish up my personal statement this weekend for that. Also next week is going to be pretty intense, I’m going out of town thursday-saturday so I’ll have to get a LOT done before then so I don’t fall behind. On the plus side though, I think that if I visit a college briefly my school won’t count it as an absence, which actually matters this year since seniors can get final exam exemptions. :D

I don’t think we had official AP scores sent to alabama but i’m not certain. S is away on an official visit so I can’t ask him. The credit appears on the mybama transcript which is not an official transcript.

Napalm - I bet any interview after that one will be a breeze now :)

S is ready to go on 5 applications. He’s just waiting for feedback on his essay from his English teacher. His class had to turn in a draft on Friday. Crossing fingers that it doesn’t need a major rewrite. His LOR teacher/track coach confirmed that she would indeed write one. She seemed pretty enthusiastic about it so I guess it will be a good one. His first set of transcript requests will be made next week in time for the 10/1 deadline. He has his first interview Monday at Ursinus. It’s finally sinking in with him and with me :/

Napalm: congrats on your improved class rank! To find the transcript on mybama log in , then go to the student tab, next look at the 4th box down on the left called Academic profile and click on transcript link. After that page loads click on Submit. Pretty obvious-not.

Dr. Mom - I wouldn’t worry about the phone calling one bit. I have called to set up tours, I have called to ask questions, I have called and called. Step-D had a jam packed summer, including a summer camp in NC where she didn’t have access to technology for 14 days. There was no way she was going to be able to call and do everything herself. She’s already got one acceptance and we are hoping for some more, and I don’t think my calling to ask questions or change an address, or set up a tour is going to effect her chances one.little.bit.

Do I think admissions officers want parents calling them and bugging on things that the student can email about - probably not. Are the admissions officers humans whom understand that Seniors are in school now from 8am-4pm and then in afternoon sports sometimes until 9pm and cannot make calls in the middle of their days - YES

Now, I need some help from you - Lucky 13’ers. Step-D sent her ACT scores out three weeks ago, and none of her schools have received them. There is something wrong here. I know some of you have been down this road with the ACT as well. PLEASE HELP! How did you go about calling the ACT offices and how did you get the scores RESENT immediately? I am going to go nuts.

laurendog: when you call the ACT, they will tell you that the scores were sent and it is the schools’ responsibility to download them (if sent electronically). They will not offer to resend the scores and will refuse to resend them. The rep. I talked to insisted it was the school’s fault and the school had to call them about it.

She finally said she could file a “missing ACT” report. I did that and it resulted in two calls from the ACT – one telling me that it was a problem at the college then the next day, saying they had resent the score and the score was received by the school. It was very frustrating as they could have sent the scores again but I guess they want their $10!!! I hope you have an easier time dealing with them.

I was at the Senior Parent night and the GC told the group that make sure when you send your ACT scores you keep the confirmation number (or whatever they call it) because “when you have to call them to say your score is missing from the college… they will ask for that number”…the GC made it sound like missing ACT scores are common!

Drumroll please, complete with smashing cymbals and perhaps a trumpet fanfare to mark the importance of the occasion-
D HAS WRITTEN AN ESSAY!
She also filled out several pages of common app. Ran into a question somewhere and said she wanted to work on the essays.
She also has jotted notes for the EC paragraph for the common app and figured out one of the other essays for 1st Choice University- one of the two full essays should easily morph into a personal statement for the schools who ask for those. No clue yet about the work of art, literature etc which challenged her but I think that will come…
I have called a college, FWiW. Did not have a clue how to answer the bit about her dad, who has been out of her life for more years than I can count- pays no support, probably not working, etc. who knows. Moreover who cares? Well- maybe the college did, so I called and asked. She seemed immensely relieved when I told her they had said she could leave him blank and I was glad ahe could just scoot along.

Ds also worked on the Common App. And I cleaned out the folders we’ve been keeping, culling all the schools that have fallen off the list. sniff, sniff Goodbye, Carleton.

We also had a pretty serious talk today about all his commitments. He said senior year hasn’t been as fun as he had hoped because he feels so much responsibility because of his numerous leadership positions. No, I didn’t say I told you so. He says he feels good about being busy and feels like he’s accomplishing a lot, just that he’s feeling the mantle of responsibility and the time isn’t as carefree as he thought/hoped it would be. That said, he’s watching football with a bunch of the guys tonight, which should be fun for him. Of course, that means he’ll be exhausted tomorrow because he work up at 6 a.m. today to run cross country and will have been going nonstop for 18 hours. At least he managed to sneak in a short nap this afternoon.

Our senior parent night is next week. Been there, done that.
