Parents of the HS Class of 2013

What’s HMFR?

HMFR? (I will probably decifer it as soon as I hit “reply” but right now I’m stumped!)

YDS & Carla- MDM gave the moniker to some of Jr’s extreme reaches, I believe, as Holy MF Reaches…I believe that’s what it was?? I’m pretty sure we were ROTFL after that post…

anyone - correct me if I’m wrong? also, don’t mean to offend…

Steve: This kind of put a damper on his love for his #1 with this. He put a lot of time and energy at camps, etc with this Coach. Emails, calls, etc… Now he feels like he has to start from square one :(

And actually, a Coach that he has been in contact for over a year now just got the job at his #2 school. It just goes to show that you never know where someone will end up…

Lol! I hope that’s it!

HMFR– I forgot about that. I laughed for about 5 minutes the first time I read that and I think our2girls has the gist of it anyway :D.

Our2: LOL…you got it!!!

love it (the HMFR)! and really, super too bad about the coach change :(

Ahhh…this too shall pass…with a really good cocktail in hand ;)

Thank you everyone for helping me take my mind of Jr’s woow’s in life…clink to you all :)

Congratulations on the recent acceptances!

Thanks for the HMFR definition. I was deciding what made the most sense and not liking any of these choices - Help Me Find Roses, Hazardous Material First Responder, or (for our XC runners) Half Marathon Fun Run. My twins may have too many HMFRs I fear.

AP Teachers: I think experienced, talented AP Science/AP Calc teachers are worth their weight in gold, but many kids do not have them. I’m sure these teachers are trying their best, but so many are inexperienced and/or untrained. It breaks my heart reading all the students on CC talking about how frustrated they are with an inability to take rigorous, well taught courses. I have to hope that colleges understand that stellar grades except one in a difficult AP course could be as much a teacher issue as a student issue. Self-study in AP Chem/AP Physics/AP Calc is doable, but really hard without help.

Have any of the applications asked for medical forms? One school DD applied to has that as a “required” form for the application process–huh?? Sorry, we will not be sending that information over unless she decides to attend that school.

Welcome to Spackler & psblstnr & any other lurkers!

Re: phone calls. I don’t pick up a call without looking at caller ID. If it’s not a relative or friend then I don’t answer, especially in the evening. And apparently I’m the only person in my house capable of answering a phone anyway  But lots of hang ups lately.

Swizzle: that’s an amazing attitude & true. Cross stitched pillows for everyone with that quote!

Longhaul: so sorry to hear about that Cadet’s death. Prayers for his family & community.

ugadog: glad that your D feels happier now that the decision is behind her!

wherenext: I think you asked pages & pages ago about D2 & Kenyon this past summer. She loved it! She enjoyed a rigorous writing experience, especially since she had to do some poetry. Felt the prompts and exercises were things she could have in her toolkit forever. Other students were good, but she made deeper connections with the kids she’s stayed in touch with from Sewanee. Kenyon is not on her list to apply to; too rural (When the Amish pull up in front of the bookstore to sell their wares, you know you’re not in suburbia!)

Cromette & MommyDearest: congrats on the admittances!

MDMom: sorry about the coach! Cute about the homecoming invite. Don’t think homecoming is a big deal here…but since neither D ever went I have no clue.

D’s holding off on sending any more apps until she gets her ACT scores next Monday. And until she puts her feet on campus next weekend & October.

Mommaof5
Have you thought about making your own announcements? I did that when I graduated college. The office stores have very nice paper you can use. Actually plan to do is for D’13 also since we need only a few.

RobD
We are waiting on those scores before we do anything else also.

Mommaof5–everyone around here uses a senior photo or any picture really and makes a greeting card/Christmas card type announcement. No one gets the formal ones but if those are more common in your area, go to a scrapbooking store and see if they will make one for you (or you can if you are crafty). You can print out what you want right from your computer using the fancy fonts and bring that in to them.

Discovered something tonight. Once you submit an application via Common App, you can not make any changes to it at all. Not even for colleges you HAVEN’T submitted yet…not even essay changes. I guess you’d have to complete an alternate application if you had any major changes that needed to be done before submitting to the remaining schools. So just a heads up.

RobD - My son still pines for Kenyon. I have to keep reminding him that they don’t have his major.

We, too, are waiting for ACT score on Monday, and I will send them to D’s schools…apps will follow VERY soon after that. Since I heard from here it can take 30 days (wth??) to process the ACT scores, and another two weeks for a school to download, that takes us to early/mid November. Makes me nervous!

How does one know when a school receives the ACT scores? Our D has only applied to our state flagship, and they are only waiting on the ACT score. December 1 is the deadline for a lot of merit aid at schools D is going to apply to…cannot miss that deadline!

our2girls-we have gotten postcards or emails from the various schools letting us know that they have test scores or applications, etc. STILL WAITING for their transcripts to be sent…

reeinaz: are you referring to not being able to change an essay, or you can’t change ANYTHING-- like he spelled his name wrong…?! Thanks for the heads up. I would have assumed that he could update before the next one.

I am loving the HMFR! Very cute.

About the whole AP calc and/or whether or not AP teachers are qualified to teach such high level classes… I had a discussion today with S1 13’s research mentor who is at the local university. He is absolutely and utterly appalled that the boys would spend 3 hours a night on Calc-- even if it is BC. In his opinion it shows bad teaching. This approach is more likely to turn a kid off to calc, than to help them love it! He thinks I should pull the boys out and hire a tutor so that they learn the material and they take the AP Calc BC test on their own. He even thinks it would look way better if they can do a great job on the test without ever having formally taken the AP calc class. That might be an option for some of you… Just make sure to get them out of the class before it shows up on the transcripts as a dropped class. I am waiting until they get the scores back from the first test to make a decision.
