Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Remember how I was telling y’all that I swear I posted things on this thread, but they never showed up. Weird.

I’ve heard that good math students tend to score higher on Math 2 than on Math 1, because of the more forgiving curve. If a student is or has taken Pre-Calc, Math 2 is probably the way to go, and the test is best taken at the end of the year of taking Pre-Calc, e.g. in May or June.

I haven’t tried posting, but the thread is on the third page now. So hopefully this moves us up.

STEMFamily - Yes he filled out both. His acceptance to school is listed on the MyBama site as well as confirmation that his scholarship app is completed. I thought maybe it was just lost in the mail, but the Scholarship link says he hasn’t been offered a scholarship. We have also paid the deposit.

our2girls - MTSU - do you mean Middle Tennessee State University? If so, the regular application covers admission to school and honors program and some scholarships - no essay. An essay is only required if you apply for the Buchanan Fellowship - a separate application.

Ok - wondering where this post will show up! I posted something this morning (in conjunction with something Dr. Mom had posted.) Posted it around 8:55 this morning or so. It is BEHIND where it should have shown up and says that it was posted at 7:39 Yesterday! ha ha That’s hilarious. I guess I posted something ‘from the future.’

Sorry that my post doesn’t make any sense now, but if you are curious, you can look for it at 7:39pm on 9-26 even though it was posted around 8:55am on 9-27. lol

Galaxy - yes! MTSU = Middle Tennessee State University. My D will be glad there’s no essay. We’ll look at the Buchanan Fellowship; thanks a lot!!

Same here, stuff has been posting for me out of order. FYI it is 9/27/12 at 9:31CDT. Lets see where it post

Thanks to everyone who is able to post (!) but havent seen it all yet!
MDMOM–I am sorry for your loss. We had a similar thing happen to our neighbor a couple of years age. It is very tragic and unimaginable until it happens to someone you know and shared experiences with. ABSOLUTELY, everyone should think about drug and alcohol use that we really want to ignore—but it is right in front of us.

about the SAT II: YEs, she is planning to take two other SAT II’s in November. I think the reason for her taking Spanish with Listening is because it is the only one given? You cannot take just SPanish in November? If someone knows otherwise, please let me know. She did take the SPANISH AP Language last spring and got a 5 on it…and that has listening…so, I would hope it would be okay, and a similar format? She plans to try the SAT LIT… she’ll have to just do her best. She does not want to take the science because she doesn’t feel as prepared. Ya know, it gets a bit nutty. She is the one having to take all these tests, and she may just not be as good a test taker in some of the humanities subjects…but her grades and the level of honors/AP classes are okay…i guess we will just have to see… wonder if you’ll all even get to read this!

I love how on this haywire thread vandyeyes thanked me (post #12646) for my answer (post #12658) to vandyeyes’ question (post #12656); it says the “thank you” came 2 hours before the question was asked and almost 2-1/2 hours before I answered.

Must be clairvoyant!

Does anyone have any advice or experience about disclosing ADD on applications? My D has two good topics for her Common App essays, neither one of them will mention her ADD. D is planning on mentioning it in the Special Circumstances section only because it explains a few lower grades and lower gpa in her freshman and sophomore years. She did really well last year after figuring a few things out, definitely had an upward trend. Does this do any harm?

Off to take another look at Truman today. I want to remind DD how much she loved that school when we visited before and to show DS how much he is going to love that school :D

Hey guys…the thread is Not showing up if you need to find it under Parents…I had to back button to get here after looking at something else…if anyone out there knows what’s up…please advise…

I found the site right away this morning. ???

To Midwestmom–this topic has come up many times over the years (probably also earlier in this thread). I believe consensus is it’s probably not a great essay topic, mostly because adcoms see a jillion similar ones every year. I think Special Circumstances is a much better place.

bclintock, I was puzzled when I saw vandyeyes thank you response to you yesterday. You always have such helpful information and I had not remembered you posting in recent days. So I went back several pages to find your post, but could not locate it. Mystery was solved when I continued to read and found your response after her thank you post. lol

YDS, I have a sneaky suspicion I haven’t been seeing all your posts either.

Time is 10:45 am CST…hope this thread works itself out and we have a normal stream of posts today…

Hope everyone has a good day today, and a great weekend, with much accomplished by Monday!! Which is October 1st…my D’s deadline for completing her apps…let’s hope :)

S2 was a little surly this morning. He was asked to be the “voice” of the marching band (narrating their show, etc) and he has to be at school at 7am everyday for band practice. He is not a morning person! Plus he was also supposed to sing at the pep rally today. Don’t know what - he’s been rehearsing a duet from the movie Twilight, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with football. I just stay out of all the school stuff.

But we all get to head to DC this weekend to see our daughter perform. It’s experimental theatre, so we’re not expecting to understand it! But it will be good to see D. She expects to be taken out to eat for every meal.

Still waiting for GC to send transcripts. Music teacher says that he sent LORs on Saturday, but none of the schools verified receipt to us. It’s just a black hole. I’ll have S2 make some calls next week.

D missed the bus to the county-wide college fair this morning because she was 5 minutes late coming from her college class. She texted me this news and then said it was ok because it gave her a chance to work on limits with her AP Calc teacher. I reminded her that college fairs give her a headache anyway, and she texted back, “yeah, so do limits!” LOL.

S’13’s UA Presidential Scholarship letter came today. He was just accepted on 9/20. Galaxy, I’m not sure if Bama does them in groups, but if you don’t get it this weekend, I would call and see what’s up. There’s nothing on S’13’s mybama page about a scholarship offer either. Maybe the letter was lost in the mail.

Have fun in DC, megp and family!

Tx5 – I’ve tried the locking S in his room thing – it doesn’t work. Still no headway on essays. And the essays keep multiplying – for every one he does, two more pop up - they’re like gremlins!

So DD loves Dartmouth and it has moved up her list to at least #2. She says everyone is very nice and she loves the Native American group there. The first 2 days there have been mostly about visiting Dartmouth. Today is packed full of lectures by the visiting scientists so I haven’t heard much from her.

In the interest of full disclosure: DD is the kind of kid who will find something to love about just about anything.

My computer and iPad came up labeling CC an attack site. Wonder if that has anything to do with the posting problems?
