Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Wow my laptop is flagging this site as having a virus… hmm

I couldn’t have more of a contrast in my life right now. While reading my little ones Kindergarten Newsletter I find they are exploring the letter “A”, while my Senior is studying matrices. Sadly, I can’t help either with their homework. Okay maybe the Kindergartener. lol

D13 met with GC today! I feel much better about the shape she’s in with her progress on her applications. We had a tiff last night with what College to name as first choice on the NMSF application. I want her to put our state Flagship, which has promised a full ride should she name them number one and become a finalist. She wants to put her EA school ( a reach). I wanted to pull rank since we are financially responsible. I stopped short of that and told her to research the pros and cons, get as much info about both, and if she still wanted to put her EA reach down, she will be responsible. Did I handle that right? DH walked by and didn’t get involved, he said his job was to either fly and drop her off if she goes OOS or drive her and drop her off if she stays near, other than that he says he’s not weighing in lol. With a baby on the way, me on bedrest, one with Aspergers and a five year old, he’s worn out!

DD got her first college acceptance today. They called her and left a message on her cell phone. She called me excited and I had to log into the website and see accepted for myself. I have to admit I cried a little bit.

We thought she had a good chance at this school, she qualifies for good sized merit money. It is not her #1 choice but it is good to know that she got in somewhere at a school that is not out of financial reach for us.

Nothing in parenting prepared me for this moment.

MyLB - Thanks for the response, I appreciate it!

@Octoberdana - congrats to your DD!!! :)

I was so happy, no malware warnings! Except then I couldn’t find the thread in the Parents Forum. CC is breaking down!

DD is on another OV this weekend. The house is so quiet without her, and even though she hasn’t been gone 24 hours yet, I am missing her so much. I guess its just a taste of what next year will be like. I don’t really like it.

LOL. why am I stressing over Plan B? a gap year could be good!!!

Octoberdana-congrats on the accepatance and the merit scholarship. very nice.

TV- we did the same discussion about which college to name, and decided to put “undecided” for now. I believe that’s the only part of the application which can be changed once its submitted. I also think we have until April or May to name a college. If your research turns up a better strategy, I’d love to hear it.

Is anyone else having issues with the annoying McDonald’s ad in the corner that keeps opening and covering posts? Or is it just me?

Yes! Please get rid of the annoying McDonalds ad!!

Yes! Do they think annoying me is the way to get me to eat a big mac?

I don’t know if my post from yesterday morning ever made it or not but we did another visit to Truman yesterday. DD liked it more than last time, DS was ho hum about it. They’ve changed how they do their student exchange dollars for cooperating states. Now you are eligible for your merit money based on GPA and test scores and they student exchange dollars are tied to your GPA and test scores, so what was about $2800 in tuition reduction is now $5000 (for our kids) plus the $3000 for GPA/test scores bringing the total cost UNDER just our instate tuition, not even considering room and board :D

I have ad blocker on my virus software or some software so I don’t see ads :D.

SteveMa- how would you describe the atmosphere at Truman? Intellectual, warm and supportive, intimate size, etc? Does it feel tiny or more like it’s own little city? We don’t know when we can visit and its an 8 hour drive for D so I’m curios about fit for her. She wants a bigger U with lots of opportunities but also a fun and quirky environment. Being with intellectual peers is also a priority for her.

I would say that the student body is intellectual with a good mix of jocks, geeks, quirky kids, etc. You really see a little bit of everything there, but defiantly on the intellectual side for sure. The campus is “just right” in my book, not too big, not too small. It certainly isn’t state flagship size but has about 6000 students. It’s one of the prettiest campuses we’ve toured too-red brick buildings, lots and lots of large trees and green spaces. The activity boards are crammed with on campus stuff to do. The town of Kirksville is nothing to write home about but you really don’t need to leave campus either. I would say out of the 40+ schools we’ve visited over the years, this school has the best program in place for getting kids internships, into post-UG programs (med, law, grad schools, etc.). They are VERY well connected with companies all over the country and have on-campus visits several times/year for recruiting. I would put this school up there with Carleton, minus the snobbery and big buck families you see at Carleton :D.

It’s a very warm, supportive school. We’ve toured twice, both times the tour guides have been wonderful but what I really liked is that about every minute or so they were waiving to friends, saying hi (by name) to kids all over campus, etc. It’s a place where you do get to know your classmates, etc. DD met with the coach for her sport, who is a prof in DS’s intended major. He was even up on what DS was thinking about. The kids all said that the profs are great, very helpful, etc.

Friday afternoon, LOTS of kids around campus. It seems like most kids stick around on the weekends. DD was talking to potential teammates and they were having a hard time trying to pick what to do this weekend because there were too many choices. The tour guide was rattling off all of the things they’ve brought in since he was there and our kids’ eyes got huge at a few of them, I have NO idea who they were though :D. They have had in the Russian Ballet, BOB is there this weekend (not sure who/what that is but the kids were impressed). The fliers were 4 deep on every board.

The facilities are in very good shape, especially for a state school. It’s funny, the ad commms we talked to were wondering how we found Truman. I don’t think they realize the reputation they have on college search sites. :D.

We did learn that there is a regional airport in Kirksville with regular flights to the St. Louis Airport, $50/each way, so if flying is easier, it might be an option.

What other schools is she considering? I know you’ve said, I just can’t keep them all straight :D.

Carleton snobbery?

Youdon’tsay–yes… We’ve spent a LOT of time in and around the Carleton campus…there is very much a snob level at that school because they are “Carleton”.

Dragonfly-Glad your DD loves Dartmouth. My DD went on Dartmouth Bound and also fell in love. Todays she is at Discover Swarthmore for weekend. Hopefully when she returns she will finish her supplements and finally finish applying to colleges…

are all these invites from schools mosty sent to athletes?

drmom123–I think the Dartmouth ones are for minority students----it’s hard to follow these with the boards being all funky though :D.

Sorry, this is my first post to CC. We are located in San Diego, CA and doing my daughter’s selection and applications. I see a lot of discussion here about College Overnights and that does not seem to be available for anything we are looking at.

Are they common? Is it a Midwest or East Coast thing only? Do you have to ask for an overnight visit? I don’t see them offered anywhere on the college websites we are considering. Here is her short list (interested in television/film, so these are selected for that major):

Chapman University (#1 Reach)
Emerson College (#2 Reach)
San Diego State
Univ of British Columbia
Montana State University Bozeman
San Francisco State
Cal State Monterey Bay (safety)

DD hit submit on app #2, which is the first one since her first app was sent in early August. Two more will be sent this weekend with her #1 delayed as she waits for an answer to a question. I see a tiny bit of light at the end of the application tunnel…then it’s on to scholarship apps :)

Dragonfly - that sounds like such a great opportunity your daughter is having. It’s a 4 day visit? She’ll get a good sense of what the school is like. Glad she’s enjoying it.

Lacrossemom - how long is the Swarthmore visit? My son’s trip is literally an overnight. He flies in tomorrow morning and spends Monday attending classes before returning around 6.

My son is freaking out (what passes as freakingout for him) because he leaves tomorrow and has “so much work to do”. Trust me when I say that it’s all very much doable if he just stops procrastinating. He asked me if he had to go…lol Ummm yeah. I’ve been reminding him all week to try and get ahead on his school work. I haven’t even suggested that he bring his laptop so he can get some work done while he’s there. That would be an easy out. Is it wrong of me that I’m enjoying seeing him sweat it out a bit?

Coralbrook - recruited atheletes tend to have overnights offered by colleges that want them. Then there are colleges who have overnight programs for minority/underrepresented students. Overnight visits for students that don’t fit into either of those groups have to be requested through the admissions office. Some only give them to students who have been accepted and some don’t give them at all.
