Parents of the HS Class of 2013

so, my DD has the SAT’s in a week. Do I see her studying? What I see her doing is … nothing. well, that may be harsh. she is “thinking” about what she has to do. She has her first interview on Monday. It’ one of her safety’s (but not sure it’s a sure thing) they said they are taking fewer kids this year because they had so many come last year. I need something to calm me down! I am getting to anxious about this!

Drmom - I was terrified at the thought of my son having to do an interview. Seriously. He isn’t good at talking about himself. But once he did his first one, I calmed down about them. I just have faith that the interviewer is really just trying to get to know the students and isn’t interrogating them…lol. I’m sure your daughter will do fine :)

Checking in. I went through withdrawal not being able to go on yesterday.

Back to School Night was great. I like his teachers. The AP Physics teacher is crazy, but in a good, I love physics, way.

He wrote 2 essays yesterday. One is good, the other needs work but has some good points. We are trying to get two good essays for the University of California prompts and then tweak them for the CA. He hasn’t written anything about sailing, and I really think he should. So today he has promised to write one to see how it comes out. Of course he left the house at 5am for a cross country meet (in the heat), was home for 10 minutes to eat and change and is now at a Fall League tennis match.

SteveMa- Thanks so much for the info on Truman. You are more informative than a visit LOL. It sounds ideal and she’s also eligible for the scholarship $$, making it competitive with our in-state schools.

Re: OV offers. I would like to believe D gets them because she’s wickedly smart, but it might be because we live in Oklahoma and its an under-represented region, AND mostly because she’s Native American. She’s athletically challenged, so it’s definitely not that. : )

SteveMA - thanks for new Truman scholarship info! For us, Truman’s COA after all automatic scholarships will be cheaper than UIUC tuition portion!!! I love Truman!

Missouri? Not a chance D would consider it! We’ll stick with those rich snobs at Carleton! (insert cute little green smiley here) Carleton is one of the few schools on D’s list with free online application.

11 hours later and he’s STILL not finished his homework. OMG!!! There were only 5 assignments. I just cannot understand why he insists on dragging stuff out.

mamabear - my D got the same attitude, but with the right ‘presentation’, great view book and visit if possible…what can I say, D applied to Hendrix and Centre today, which makes me very happy, because she hates ‘south’.

Went to a CMU information session on Thursday. Only six kids were there. The guy was actually very informed about the arts and audition process. DD13b is excited to be going up to Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks. She is also nervous knowing that over 1k kids auditioned last year for about 25 slots in drama and musical theatre. Worse odds to get into a BFA program then getting into med school. Yikes.

Anyway, highly recommend CMU’s session if they are on your list.

OMG Finally!!! S1 '13 AND S2 '13 both churned out their first drafts for the personal statement on CA. It’s a miracle! I am in total and utter shock. I have begged, pleaded, and finally screamed and lost it and they finally realize that I am serious. It barely scratches the surface of all the supplemental essays that still have to appear, but at least the process has finally begun. I have to say that I was getting depressed about everyone else’s kid sitting down and writing their essays-- and I have two of them and neither one was producing!!! So hang in there if you are still waiting on your kid. I suggest being a drama mama and maybe they will get the message.

DD made it home! She was at Dartmouth from Wednesday afternoon until Saturday morning.

I found this list of diversity fly-ins
[2012 Diversity Fly-In Visit Program List: Seniors to Visit This Fall!](http://www.college-path.com/2011-diversity-flyin-list-colleges-pay-seniors-visit-fall/)
Most of the application dates have passed but there are a couple left.

I wish I could get DD to go to one more for comparison sake but she has way too much school work to miss anymore school. Guess we will have to wait until acceptances.

The good news: I insisted S stay in his room and produce an essay and he did!
The bad news: It sucks so bad I can’t begin to figure out how to rescue it.

MomofNEA- LOL!!
Greekmana & MomofNEA - I appreciate both of your posts -thank you. I thought I was the only one still frustrated with my kid’s lack of application progress. Right now, I think she is stumped by the EC resume, and how to organize all that information.

Dragonfly- Did you read the Rolling Stone article this year about Dartmouth Frats? I was wondering if DD got to go to any parties, and what she thought about the fraternity scene when she was there.

Did she like it, Dragon?

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if you could chance me at Eugene Lang for the fall 2013 semester. I am currently a high school senior and I would be applying ED.
GPA: 2.9 (I KNOW)
SAT: 1970
Extracurriculars: Member of prestigious youth orchestra that travels internationally
Member in high standing with my High school band
Politically during the Occupy Wall St. protests
My GPA can really be attributed to the tragic death of a close friend during the winter of my junior year, after which I left my school for two months and came back having to withdraw from a lot of my classes. I have amazing recs from my teachers and I can write a great essay for admissions. This school is my top choice and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. I’ve visited the campus multiple times (I live less than an hour away from NYC). With ED, do you think I have a decent shot?
Thanks in advance!

Reeinaz: I feel your pain! My DD knew she had a 4 hour commitment this Sunday, and much SAT prep and homework to do. this morning, 7am she was in bed saying “do I have to go that commitment?” and then telling me she had done no work at her friend’s house whom she went to “do homework with” yesterday. She talks a good game about all the great schools she wants to apply to. But, nod doing much in my book to really show how much it matters. and, she wants to take the ACT’s again, “I’ll study this time”. with what i’m observing, she better really like her safety’s…and maybe we need to find a safety for that safety! ugh. I hope I live through this!

mamabear1234–There is a lot more in Kirksville then there is in Northfield, but that’s not saying much for either town :D.

coralbrook–overnights–some of the ones people are talking about are invite only for certain demographic groups, athletes, minorities, etc. but pretty much every college will allow a prospective student to stay overnight in a dorm with a current student as part of a visit. Some schools limit those visits to seniors and even some limit them to accepted seniors but most schools it’s just something you sign up for on the school website or through the admissions office. Our kids haven’t done any overnights and probably won’t unless DD accepts an official visit or 2 from a couple schools that are recruiting her athletically.

Psblstnr: Hendrix was our first college tour and is still my top pick. I loved everything about it. Our S15 loved it too and was ready to enroll on the spot but alas, they require him to finish HS first LOL. Unfortunately, D13 wasn’t so jazzed on it.

DS is not getting anywhere with essays, but he had an off-site interview with his Admissions Rep yesterday for one of his top 3 schools and is at an alum interview now for another school.

After yesterdays’ interview (which lasted 1 hr 20 min), we stopped for dinner. The most relaxed & talkative he has been in quite some time. He actually told me he was thankful I was crazy college search Mom for so long because he feels in a much better position than all of his friends. Too many classmates are being easily swayed by everyone offering advice. Too many are applying for name only. He is very confident that all his choices offer a solid fit. It was a confidence and maturity I haven’t seen in him before. Of course, he still needs to get the essays done!

I discovered yesterday that I am slacking on the aid deadlines. If he applies EA to one of his schools, I need to get the CSS Profile done by 11/15!

Mornin’! I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

@Walker - I keep mixing up your Ds . . . are they both applying to CMU?

@Greek”man” – WTG, boyys! I just told S’13 I’m going to beat him until he does these essays. He produced one crappy paragraph yesterday – he is so hit or miss. He has exactly ONE month until most of the scholarship essays are due. I told him if he thinks he’s going to churn out crappy essays, then he will also being paying the application fees because I’m not throwing money down the toilet.

MomofNEA – see above – I feel your pain!
