We are going to CMU Nov. 11-12. Since she has applied Early Decision, we are getting the Sleeping Bag Weekend and her interview/portfolio review done in one weekend.

UGA: We can’t do ED because they don’t offer anyone a slot until after all auditions are complete. At least you will know sooner than we will! I’ll let you know how ours goes. We’re driving cuz it’s cheaper :).

DD came home from her visit (sooo tired). I think she is going to have to cancel her remaining trips, which is a real shame. Its the best way to see the school, the coach and the team dynamics. Unfortunately, she just can’t afford to miss any more school/sleep/practices/homework time. And some of her teachers have been pretty vindictive almost about the trips and missing class. I don’t think they understand how important they are.

She cancelled one, and the coach has written her off at that school. We are trying to figure out if there is any way to cancel the other without burning that bridge too.

This process is too hard. It would be so much easier to just apply RD to a group of schools and find out in April where she was going. I wish they could do a match system - you rank your favorites, and they rank theirs. Put it in the computer, and it spits out where you are going next year. Boom. done.

Steve and Carla, thanks for the good advice. An overnight is a really good idea, as is a reminder that he still has nearly a year here. Drmom, I agree that dropping ED would reduce his anxiety but he is one of those cases where it could really make a difference. Part of me hopes for a deferral for that reason…but that would mean more essays…

Oh man. I’ve been so busy these past few days. To sum things up:

-My physics teacher was fired. I didn’t complain about her on here because I didn’t want to seem like another whiny teenager, but she really never taught us anything. I’m not exactly sure what chapter we’re on or what we’re doing. All I know is that for the past three weeks I’ve been “learning” how to round numbers and doing scientific notation…things I learned in the seventh grade. Anyway, I’m one of those kids (just like your students) who goes to school to learn. I want to actually understand physics in case I have to apply something to my life that deals with it or if I have to take a physics class in college, I want to be able to have some recollection of whatever we may be doing. So, I’m happy she got fired. She’s a really nice lady, but she just isn’t a good teacher. This was her first year on the job, by the way.

-My computer has contracted a virus. I’m going to see if the IT guys at school will fix it for me at a minimal cost, but otherwise it looks like I’m dishing out $150 to get it fixed. The unfortunate thing is that the virus is only on my username, and I can’t seem to get rid of it no matter how many times I try to delete it. I’m really good with computers, and I’ve been able to get rid of countless viruses before, I just can’t get rid of this one. And of course, I need to have access to everything I’ve written for college (it’s such a great thing that all of my college stuff is saved under MY username and I can’t access it from any other username on the laptop). Ughh, oh technology.

I was supposed to apply to my local state university tonight because my school messed up with Naviance and some how my letter of rec got sent even though I haven’t submitted an app yet and no one understands what’s going on. Great time to implement Naviance now, guidance, without learning about it and fully teaching it to us first. A+ for effort.

Swizzle: You have definitely had a few crazy days. Good luck with the computer. Now is not the time to have computer issues!

Walker: I wanted to drive, but CMU is soooo far from here. We would both end up missing school on Monday and Tuesday instead of just Monday. At the end of that week, we have to miss Friday becuase she has a portfolio review at UNCSA. How many schools are on your student’s list? Even though my D is tech, she has 14 schools because finances are a concern for us. It really all boils down to the financial package for her. That’s why she went ED with CMU. It would be a dream come true on many levels for us if she is accpeted! Best of luck to your D in auditions!

Greekmana, Carla, anniez: So totally there with you! This was going to be “the” weekend for essays & getting the common app submitted. Let’s not talk about supplements…
S13 who wan NOT going to homecoming dance (his emphasis) got invited by a group (8 girls, he was boy #5) & decided he WAS going. He & DH spent the entire day Saturday deciding what he should wear. On the plus side, he had a GREAT time & considering it was the 1st dance he attended in HS both H & I were happy for him. I guess there is always next weekend…oops, not next weekend, he has to take the SAT on Saturday! Hmm…Sunday?

He did, however, press send on state flagship application where essays were not critical for admission. So, I guess he has a 100% better chance of going to college today than he did two days ago.

DS is away at U of M, he left yesterday and gets back after school today. He is with a group of 37 kids who have been nominated for a full tuition scholarship, but all of them will get a $2000 one if they attend there. I’m hoping the visit will help with the supplemental essays.

Homecoming activities: it will be an insane week. Wednesday is the Powder Puff game, I don’t know if it is a tradition with a lot of schools, but here Junior girls play Senior girls and it is a BIG deal. DS is the coach for the senior girl team. According to him the NHS teacher-adviser told him he had to, personally I think he loves it. Friday is the big homecoming game, Saturday the dance and then Monday is the Mr. Wonderful contest. I had never heard of Mr. Wonderful before we moved here. The Homecoming Queen nominees each nominate 2 candidates for Mr. Wonderful. They then have to do a talent, dress up in a spirit wear “costume” and lead a personal cheer or song and then answer questions. The winner is crowned Mr. Wonderful and gets $100 and there is also a Mr. Congeniality who gets a $25 gift card. So needless to say I’m not so hopeful for any college stuff to get done in the next week. But hopefully, he will make some great hs memories!

DH started the CSS Profile this weekend!

Well we went to Vanderbilt last Friday - if anyone wants details let me know but I won’t elaborate unless people want to hear. I thought it was great -dd was just OK - I really think she is burned out with college information and if we would have gone 6 months ago she would have LOVED it! Good news is that she definitely will not do (ED - not an option in our family because of finances) and the RD isn’t due for awhile so we can “think about it”

As far as the CSS - if you fill it out now do you use 2011 numbers or estimate 2012?

Bama Honors App completed - check
Bama housing deposit paid - check

Now, just need the NM app completed before the deadline & I’ll be feeling better.

@ahsmuoh - I’d love to hear about Vandy! It was on my wish list for son, but like your DD, he is so done with thinking about where to apply.

CSS - I was going to use 2011 numbers. Ours will change, but at this time guessing 2012 actual vs using 2011 will probably be just as off. Technically, you should estimate 2012.

@mommaof 5 - That is so exciting that he has already been nominated for a full scholarship!

I am really not happy with 2 of the schools on son’s list. I’m secretly hoping he blows the deadlines for those schools. I see the pattern of most of his schools, but 1 of these 2 just doesn’t fit with any other school.

Longhaul, maybe it is a good thing that S has a mix of schools? I have heard kids can change quite a bit between now and next spring–at least that is what I am telling myself, with my Ds list! Happy October everyone.

Longhaul - Vandy was also one of my “picks” for DD - she just saw the tuition and didn’t think it was feasible until we really understood that it probably would be possible with financial aid. The campus is very pretty and contained! It gives you a suburban feel but is only 1 1/2 miles from downtown Nashville - We went downtown and it is very nice - the entertainment district was hopping at noon on a Friday - saw three live bands! DD loves music and loves country music so she really enjoyed that visit. I like that all the freshman live in the same quad - called the Commons. I think there are 8 dorms - four of which were new a couple years ago and the others were renovated at the same time. We of course saw the new ones and they are very nice. You can major across the schools which is nice too. My dd likes to count how many kids she sees with school spirit wear on (this is important to her) and she lost count at about 20 or so…so I saw that as a good sign. Cafeterias seemd nice with several options. Someone said that they felt the Commons was far away from the rest of campus but we walked to it and it only took about 10 minutes - not far to me. One thing I liked a lot was the geographic diversity of the students! Tennessee was #1 and New York was #2 - with California having close to 200 students! 1600 students per class - I think that is a great size.

erlanger - I have also heard that kids change their minds so I am trying to encourage getting apps done and then just chilling out unitl everything comes in - and then she can stress again!

Good news - GC finally sent 5 schools transcripts and LOR’s today! So, dd should have news in the next 2 weeks on at least two of the schools! One being Bama - always nice to have a full tuition scholarship in hand!!!

Good news, DS got 2 more acceptances in the mail today, and another t-shirt :D.

Bad news–they STILL have not gotten DD’s transcripts at the schools she applied to–one of the acceptances for DS was one school SHE applied to as well…I finally called the GC and talked to the secretary. They said everything was sent on their end and to have DD come in and they can call all of the schools together tomorrow to see what the issue is. We emailed a few schools over the weekend and they don’t have them. I really don’t know what else to do!!!

SteveMA-How totally frustrating. You can’t do anything else - hopefully they can get it sorted out tomorrow. The good news is that it is only October 1. Re-read the last few pages of posts and remind yourself how far ahead of the process your kids are than so many of the rest of our kids.
Congrats on your son’s acceptances.

SteveMA–Congratulations!!! As for the transcripts, it will get straightened out tomorrow even if that means emailing them again tomorrow. Once you have the name of a person who will receive them, they will magically be delivered.

Steve…that is so strange…maybe they put D’s in your son’s folder?..Twins right…Good Luck tomorrow and I hope this all gets straightened out Quickly…

@Stevema - We all know it will work out, but going thru the paces is frustrating. I get frustrated with keeping track for 1 kid; can’t imaging how you are doing it with 2.

@ahsmuoh - Thanks for the report!

Congratulations to your S, SteveMA! And I hope D’s issues get all squared away tomorrow.

Oh wow! Could BE (stuff in your Son’s folder for your Daughter!) Same last name, same birthdate!

Watching this thread, I am:

In awe of all of you guys and how well you all are doing with so much to do and think about!

Really glad that our process was WAY simpler and shorter and that I’m done with admissions with my D.
