Carla2012–the problem is that DD is a recruited athlete and needs to have a decision made by November 1st so we DON’T have a lot of time. Once (IF) she gets acceptances in we need to get our financial information over to the schools so they can put together a package and we can compare final costs, etc. so she CAN make the decision. She turned in her transcript requests almost a month ago because of this…

She just emailed all of the schools she applied to on the common app to see where they are at with everything. The schools that DS has been accepted to are all ones where they had to snail mail the applications so I don’t know where his are at the common app schools either.

well, I think we all agree that it is just ridiculous that after so long, and so many requests that the transcripts have not been sent. When your kids are all finished and have their acceptances in hand - you should really make a more formal complaint about the complete ineptitude of that office. Its stressful enough without this on top of everything.

I’ll have an extra drink for you tonight :)

Carla2012–the funny thing is our GC is usually WONDERFUL. I just don’t know what is happening here. She was amazing with our older 2 and all of that “stuff” but they didn’t apply via common app anywhere so who knows. We just checked Naviance though and mysteriously all of the “pendings” on DD’s applications were changed to “initial materials submitted”…I checked before we called the GC earlier and they were all still listed as pending (for the common app ones). She still has one app listed as “pending” which was supposedly mailed out on Sept. 15th.

SteveMa - is it possible your D’s name on the transcript is slightly different than what she put on her application? Such as Liz versus Elizabeth, for example? The SSN should make them match up, but this is ridiculous! I don’t know how you can remain calm :)

D submitted another app yesterday, do two left, which will be submitted tomorrow. I can’t wait for apps to be finished and the first acceptance to
be in hand!

It’s going to be a busy few weeks! By friday I want to have my personal statement perfected and then submit a couple apps that only require that essay. I also need it for the NMF app which is due next Wed. My first app deadline is an October 15 EA, this is actually happening! And then I have a few more Nov. 1, and then the big push for early January. Some of my friends are still stressing about taking standardized tests, I’m so glad I got those out of the way. Right now I have a working draft of my personal statement at least, but I still need to do some pretty major edits.

Good luck to everyone in these hectic times!

our2girls–different name not possible, she has one of those names that her name is her name (no nicknames) but possible that there is a typo or transposed letter??

Just checked her common app site to see if something was wrong and now all of the colleges list the school forms as “assigned” or “in progress”–that was NOT there earlier today. I think my phone call prompted the GC to do something on THEIR end. NOT HAPPY.

cromette–now we just have to follow up with the applications where the transcripts were mailed–like the one where DS got his acceptance today and DD didn’t…giving that one more day to see if it comes in the mail tomorrow. She it the top recruit for her sport there and her GPA and test scores come in the top 15% so I can’t imagine she wouldn’t get in.

My sonjust got back from his Hamilton overnight and now has a new favorite. Too bad his chances of admittance are slim Anywho, he absolutely loved it there. His host (a freshman music major from Tx) was really nice and introduced him to his friends, so S was able to hang with different people while he was there. He said everyone was friendly and nearly everyone wore jeans and tshirts (I was worried it might be too preppy). He said the food was by far the best of any campus he’s been on. He had freshly rolled sushi. He also thought the campus was the most aesthetically pleasing. He said all the dorms except the one he stayed in were really nice. He stayed in Dunham Hall which is the biggest dorm on campus and is nicknamed “Dirty D”. But, no one there was complaing about the state of it. He went to 3 classes today with his host and said he really enjoyed them but one class had a guest speaker who he felt didn’t present her work that well. She got too advanced for the level of the class. All in all, he said he could definitely see himself there.

ree, I’m glad he liked it. Rice wasn’t the hit that I hoped it would be, though today was much better than yesterday, so he’s keeping it on the list and would seriously consider going there.

ahsmom - Not sure if you talked to Vandy about aid, but they go beyond the Federal aid and meet 100% demonstrated need. Or that is at least what we were told.

Also if you venture about 20 - 25 minutes due south of campus, you will find Franklin and Cool Springs. About everything they will need - Shopping, Dining, Movies, Ice rink, Laser Tag, etc. Of course Green Hills Mall is about 5 minuted from Campus, but not really in line with a college budget.

Does anyone have any good resources to recommend to study up on how to do a college interview? DD13b will have to do a Skype interview with a school that is too far for us to go to until her audition. The school only does interviews during the week, which kinda sucks. She can come off kind of ditzy and goofy but she really isn’t. Need to work with her on that.

Anyone having trouble when previewing on the common apps? D has added her ACT scores, highest per section as requested, and saved numerous times, but it doesn’t preview! It shows up blank. And one of the two common apps she will be submitting doesn’t allow previewing until you pay…which means it’s submitted, so how does it help then to preview?? UGH!!

Reeinaz- Isn’t it exciting? So glad the kids are enjoying these visits.

I like Vandy for DD also but she hasn’t paid the least bit of attention to it. It is a rather long drive so we haven’t visited.

DD just got an email invitation to apply for an fly-in at Duke in partnership with her NA tribe. We are going to try to make it work but she has an IB presentation that Thursday she can not miss. Duke is a big deal around these parts.

Okay - re: my post # 12,770, I found on the common app help that if a college does not wish to receive test scores from the common app they do not show up on the preview :)

Longhaul, you noted that you paid the deposit for Bama housing. Did you need to make the (non-refundable) enrollment deposit first? I thought I read that’s how it worked. My DS is trying to decide how much he wants to commit at this point, so I’m just trying to make sure I’m processing all the details correctly.

MumTo3: Yes, you have to pay the enrollment deposit first. If you try to go to the housing application without paying the enrollment deposit, a box comes up that tells you that you cannot proceed until the enrollment deposit is paid.

It has been great reading everyone’s progress. Congrats to all the acceptances! Hello, to all the new people.

Reeinaz- Glad your S had a great time and good impression of Hamilton.

SteveMa- You are so good at sorting things out! Bravo to you!

Swizzle you are going places! A very busy girl apparantly.

Our update. D finished all of her applications on CA on Sept 10. Her school switched for the first time to Naviance around Sept 13. Everything is now at a stand still. No teachers can submit LORs because they haven’t been taught yet. None of D’s applications are complete without the LORs and transcripts cannot be sent (even though they have been paid for) until the Counselor and Teachers submit their letters. Yikes! D has two UK schools so she is using UCAS. That has sent teachers into a tailspin. So D is in a holding pattern. Essays finished in early September, apps done, resumes turned in etc…and nothing!

On happier notes… St Andrews had a info meeting near us and I dare say my D was gotten at “Hello”. Think a twenty something Hugh Grant coming up to a 17 year old and addressing her by name for starts. Then telling a story about his university like he was the lead in A Never Ending Story, he had me on the endge of my seat (: we will have to wait and see where that goes. Scots got a thumbs up for presentation.

We also went to Edinburgh meeting with Oxford. Edinburgh was very nice and D thinks that dating Scotsmen would be a big plus. Hummm…slightly off task. Oxford almost made us laugh. She loves Oxford but really wants to go to college for four years. Someone asked how they can documenent their EC’s for Oxford. The response was, “At Oxford, we see EC’s as extra time you had for studying your chosen major! If you are into Chemistry that is what we want to see. Not dance line or Harry Potter Club president. We want you to love your subject so much Chemistry is what they would put on your tombstone above your name…”

Like others here, this meeting fell flat only because they are all sounding the same, with the exception of the tombstone. D is done. However, she is sleeping in her new UChicago tshirt… the “Call me Maybe” letter with it, was much better than any visits in quite a while.

It is stressful that D has done all she can and now she waits for all the moving parts to catch up. Hopefully, they will slide into place for EA schools.
