Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Has anyone else received the mailings from Rose-Hulman? What are they thinking??!!! They have this really ugly old lady cartoon character on there. I thought maybe it was a teenage thing that I didn’t get. My sons also thought it was very weird. Nothing that would make one want to apply there! If anyone gets it, please enlighten me!

GreekMana - DS got that and I thought the exact same thing! LOL!! Not the best marketing strategy.

Tonight was the Powder Puff football game and it was so good. Those girls were into it!!! Seniors beat Juniors. DS was responsible for coaching kicking off and extra pt kicks and his team made every one so he was really pleased. I got lots of pictures so hopefully some good ones for his open house!

Good luck to everyone with all of the apps, forms, LORs, transcripts, tests, visits, try-outs, games, meets, classes, practices, performances, dances, jobs and everything else our kids have on their plates! No wonder we/they are so stressed out!

I am in the middle of putting together a senior ad for the yearbook for DS. Any suggestions for a short quote or saying for the dedication?

Somebody give me some wine . . . I’m about to bust out the wire hanger! These essays are going to be the death of me.

Congrats, Terinzak’s S!!!

tx5athome, I looked through previous yearbooks for ideas for a message that was appropriate for our daughter. I’m actually still working on tweaking it, but it at least it got the juices flowing.

teri, congrats on the admission! And congrats to anyone else I’ve missed. :)

Better night in our house than last night. :D

SteveMA, oh, I’ve had those experiences - you have my sympathies! But glad that it’s straightened out and that the acceptances are starting to roll in!

MommyD, that cracked me up!

MommyDearest…toooo funny…Ms Crawford was always a favorite of mine. Even after the book!!

On a good note D has 6 supplement essays done!!! CA essay too… It’s very risky and saids nothing about her but it’s a wonderful piece. I didn’t know she could write :)

Now if we only had an acceptance in hand… I’d be floating on air…
Instead I’m having a migraine over all the financial aid forms… The CSS is a killer…the FASA doesn’t look nearly as bad…
If anyone’s has tips. I’m all ears!!!

Steve… Glad you solved the mystery… I wouldn’t want to be a teenager in your house tonight :)

tx5 - I have always loved quotes from Winnie the Pooh - I will definitely use one for my DD. Google “Winnie the Pooh quotes” - there are some really good ones about being a friend and dreaming - not sure if this is the kind of thing you were looking for but take a look - especially if he like Pooh growing up (which my dd LOVED)

Here is an example that might work

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

or this…

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
― A.A. Milne

Or these: (sorry I love Pooh)

“Some people care too much. I think it’s called love.”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“Sometimes,’ said Pooh, 'the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”
― A.A. Milne
“I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

ahsmuoh, you’re making me teary!

ahsmuoh: Thank you, thank you!! Great ideas!!!

Great quotes! DS & DD loved Pooh!
I wish it wasn’t too late for the yearbook.

Love the Pooh quotes! My D would have loved them. For S2, I found a quote from Game of Thrones - his favorite book series. I did have fun looking for candid pictures for his yearbook page. Found some great ones. Can’t believe it’s senior year. I’m starting to get nostalgic.

First marking period report cards were posted today. He did fine in all his classes, but I sense that he’s coasting. Just have to keep all As and Bs til the end of the semester. I think AP English is kind of surprise for him (harder than he expected) but it will be good to get some writing experience before college.

A few years ago, there was a thread about leaving a goodbye note with your freshman student on move-in day. Someone suggested this quote and I used it. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to D1 with words of encouragement and pride:

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
― A.A. Milne

Thanks for the great quotes…I’m crying reading them…and I’m using one of them :)

Love that one, Vitrac. My son’s nursery was done in Pooh :::sniffle, sniffle:::

I’m not sure if I’ll do a yearbook message, but I’ll probably choose a song lyric or quote from a favorite book. He would probably like something funny or an inside joke.

Hi,

I have been looking at the housing application process for DS’s top choice schools.
Anyone else have a concern about housing application timing? The logical thing would be to wait until we have heard back from everywhere DS has applied, see where he may have received best offers, and then accept the best fit and apply for housing. Sounds logical right?

But here is the catch. Some of the schools don’t guarantee housing to freshman so if you don’t accept and submit housing app early, you certainly won’t get your choice of housing and you could get shut out. Just another thing to consider…

Good morning all!
We are moving at a fast clip!! I imagine we will have days like yesterday where there is a lot of new info. Btw - how many are on FB, and how many spend more time here than there? (Raising hand here) :)

Not wanting to tip our D’s hand, but she used one of the Pooh quotes (referenced correctly, ha ha) in her CA essay…it was very appropriate in her case :)

2kidzmom – housing and acceptances…I was a little taken aback when there was a box to check on the CA saying we would not send deposits (or whatever it said, exactly) to more than one school. But hey – the schools “over accept”, beyond the number of students they can enroll, knowing some will not accept, so why can’t we do the same??
