Parents of the HS Class of 2013

ree, that’s so funny!

Ds reports he’ll have a couple of Bs for the six weeks. Grrrr.

In fun news, I totally scouted out locations for his senior photo shoot. I hope this woman doesn’t regret my hiring her!

ETA: Oh, and last night I schmoozed with one of ds’s LOR writers. So far, ds is the only person for whom he’s writing! Hope that means good things. I told him that I was embarrassed for him to read what I wrote, and he said I should see the parents who don’t brag on their kid in the brag sheet and instead bring up all their flaws. He said he wonders how those parents expect him to write good things about their kid when they can’t even do that.

Youdon’tsay—those poor kids!!! What are their parents thinking?? Hopefully the teacher meets with the kids then and gets some good information from them. Yikes.

reeinaz–sounds like our oldest son…who is now out of college and gainfully employed if that helps any :D.

Congratulations to Walker’s D! And congrats to anyone else I missed - this thread moves too fast to keep up!

Another parent here who looks back and has “ah ha” moments about my DS’ behavior and how I could have handled things differently.

D says no college talk tonight in our house - just a “non stressed out” evening. So I’m signing off. :)

annie, my ds announced that he’s going to take a 90-minute nap and then get up and work!

Mom of NEA - LMAO! Your son’s decision-making is classic!

I’m not one whom has regrets about my interactions with Step-D, but I do look back at how my parents handled my ADHD brother, and I see a million things I wish they would have done differently. I guess you can always say that 'hindsight is 20/20" but some of the things they did (or didn’t do) with him I wish I could go back and change. In a way, their lack of consistency and I what I perceive as their absence of ‘toughness’ with him, has made me pretty tough with Step-D. I don’t cut her much slack - but I hope that it benefits her in the future.

No new admissions news here and it is driving me batty! Step-D, oh she’s just fine. ha ha

Good luck tomorrow to anyone taking SAT’s or Subject Tests… :)

Youdont say, I have a rule to never put my kids down to their teachers, there’s enough people in this world that will be against them, I certainly shouldn’t be one of them.

Our D received her first acceptance, to our state flagship! Yeah! It’s really not at all near the top of her list, but she was really excited anyway. And, it came with a merit scholarship, to boot! Even though it is not close to the top of her list she know we can afford it, so she knows she’ll at least be going somewhere next year ;)

Btw - the GC in D’s hs told all us parents of seniors that when your child receives a scholarship to CELEBRATE!! Even if it is not a large amount. $500 can buy books! $1,000 each year is $4,000 you don’t have to pay for! I was glad I remembered the GC’s advice, because I was able to enjoy our D’s excitement that a college is willing to give her money for her education :)

Walker, Our2girls & SteveMA congrats on the acceptances!! It’s so much fun to see them excited about the whole process!!!

TV - im sorry to hear about the additional challenge of gestational diabetes. I have type 2 and it’s hard enough … You are in my prayers!!!

It was interesting to read about the different ways schools handle ranking & GPAs. Some of the systems seem quite complicated!!! My D’s transcript shows 99th percentile. That’s as good as it gets for her. From speaking with her classmates she believes she’s #2. She can never pass #1 (her BF) because he’s taken more classes than everyone also. Val speech is actually applied and auditioned for in D’s school so I know she won’t be doing it. She has no desire to make a speech. LoL

Now for SAT2s tomorrow … Math2, Bio, and French for D. Then Homecoming tomorrow night.

Good luck to all the kids testing on Saturday!!

Good luck to our 13ers taking tests tomorrow…may the odds be ever in your favor!!

Good luck to those testing tomorrow!

This weekend should hopefully be productive on the college front. Last week I requested a second academic LoR and a supplemental one. Tomorrow I will try to finalize my commonapp essay, sunday I have an interview, and monday I’ll have my counselor check over my essay and then I’ll submit apps to Case, Pitt, National merit and maybe more.

Oh, has anyone else gotten the “call me maybe” letter from uchicago? Probably my favorite mailing to date.

Good luck to the test takers this morning!

Our2girls - congrats to our daughter on that 1st acceptance. I’ll be on pins and needles waiting for my son’s first one.

My son emailed his LOR writer last night at my prompting. He really has a hard time understanding that it’s fine to email a teacher outside of school hours. And of course she responded within a few hours saying she had been notified he cancelled the request (Naviance). Well, he did but sent another request so I told him to just send a third request without cancelling the other one. But she said she’d work on it over the weekend. I hope we didn’t break Naviance :)

Hi everyone, this thread is so busy! Wow! I remember a year ago complaining about how slow it was ::headslap!:: I do read via digest every day though.

A VERY hearty congratulations to all of you who have kids admitted to college already! It’s wonderful to see. I don’t think we’ve had a single rejection or deferment for this group yet either. YAY!

Lasts- they are starting to add up a bit. My D’s brother just had his 14th birthday and it will be the last time she is home to celebrate with us. Today we are going to the Renn Fest and it will be her last time to do that too, unless she goes to college relatively close by and comes home for the weekend. We’ve taken the kids every year since they were babies. :-(

I don’t have a kid on the spectrum but I do have a 10 year old son who was diagnosed ADHD. He was on meds starting mid-way through third grade and through 4th. I decided to see how he would do this year without them and so far (knock on wood) he appears to be doing all right. I hated how the medication seemed to dampen his zest and zaniness. We’ll have to see how it goes continuing forward.

My D’s school does not rank and it is very small- her senior class is around 70ish kids. I know she falls pretty high in there but no idea exactly. She’s doing well in all classes except AP Physics, where she messed up on a test and it is really bringing her score down b/c it is 50% of the grades she has so far. Really hoping she can get it up.

I’ll keep reading but if I don’t write- I still care! :-)

Hi, everyone, just checking in to wish everyone (and their D’s and S’s) good luck on the SAT’s and SAT subject tests today!
I’ll echo vandygrad, I always read the thread but if I don’t write - I still care! :)

Our2: I second the celebrations for scholarships idea!

Sometimes I think D takes these achievements in stride TOO much, as if everyone earns them. I want her to appreciate the honor and know they are bestowed on her as a result of her hard work.

Yesterday, she took counselor’s reports for 2 of her schools to the GC to be filled out and attached to transcripts. She left her backpack in the GC’s office by mistake and drove all the way home with drivers license, debit card and all her weekend homework in the backpack! I told her to hurry back to get it, sure that the GC would be gone and doors locked. I called 5 times and finally got an answer! GC was kind enough to stay late until D got there. I love our counselor! Crisis and head slap averted. LOL.

Good morning all! Best wishes to all the test takers this AM including my D13!

I’m worried about D13s stamina today. She’s got the SAT’s this AM, then on to do some volunteer work for the next 5hrs at one of the political candidates offices today (not saying which one ;o) ). She’s got her NMSF Essay to tweek, EA College supplement Essays, and the finished EE for IB is due Monday!!! I don’t know if anyone saw that movie “Limitless” but some AZT would be great right now lol.

I’m glad someone mentioned Senior pics upthread. It came back on my “to do ASAP” list. I got them set up yesterday! I almost dropped the ball on that one.

Do your kids have Class rings? I asked D13 about it and she said she wasn’t sure if she wanted one.

Hi All !
Haven’t posted in a long time. Actually I have been avoiding CC on purpose as it is both addictive and anxiety producing for me ;)

DS is testing today. Rankings are out. Early apps. not submitted yet - suddenly he seems to be in total control and tells me not to worry…
Homecoming was two weeks ago. DS ws a DJ for this and looks like he is booked for a few more dances this year.

TV - there are rings at our school but kid is not interested.
I on the other hand was not interested in senior pictures. So overpriced! Will do our own when he actually graduates.

Kelowna The pics are overpriced! We found a reasonable photographer for just the basics. The Yearbook wants their picture by Nov1st, otherwise I would have put it off.

I have a funny story my Mom told me about her recent Senior picture experience with my niece. She graduated last year. The photographer has this room set up where they take the families to look at the proofs. It’s dimly lit, there’s a couch with a tissue box next to it, and a big screen that flashes up the proofs in a slide show complete with soft music. The fix is in! It’s one of the popular studios here in town and they spend what seems to be millions on advertizing. The amount of mailings from them rivaled the College ones. Needless to say, we did not go with that studio.

Seems like senior year is just one big money pit.

-Senior pics - getting ours done for free by family friend. Printing at Walgreens.
-Class ring - nope. S2 wouldn’t wear it.
-Letter jacket - S2 lettered in sophomore year, so that’s taken care of.
-Senior ad in yearbook - doing a 1/2 page ad for $120 (expensive but I think S2 will like it)
-Grad announcements - nope. Anyone who cares already knows he’s graduating.
-Choir trip to the beach - S2 has to pay for it himself.
-Homecoming mum (a Texas thing) - Gave him a $75 budget (for basic mum), anything over that he pays for. He plans on canabalizing one of his sister’s old mums for trinkets.

And the list goes on…
