Parents of the HS Class of 2013

We do the jacket, the ring and the pics. We go economy on flowers for dances too. I have a photographer that does the pics. The company the school hires is outrageous for what you get. I just picked her yearbook photo. Don’t know if I’ll order any prints from them. Ridiculous. Yes, senior year is expensive and a roller coaster ride.

Our2girls - Congratulations! That is a great attitude about celebrating!

Kelowna - I know exactly what you mean about addictive and anxiety producing (not that I don’t create enough anxiety in my own head!)!

DS is in the middle of Homecoming celebration. Last night was the big football game. We won 32-14. DS scored a touchdown - his first of the season! YAY!!! The moms made a big pancake breakfast for the team this morning and then he and I went to pick up his date’s corsage. Tonight is the dance. Monday is the Mr. Wonderful contest - he was formally announced as a candidate at the pep-rally on Friday. He came home with a big pink glittery sash and a special t-shirt to wear. He is now trying to come up with a funny/difficult talent, and a spirit chant. I got a call asking me to give them 3 words to describe him for part of the contest - hopefully he likes the 3 I gave, talk about being put on the spot! Obviously, no college supplemental essays are getting worked on. Oh well, back to the grindstone on Tuesday.

Good morning!

Class rings: our D’s Catholic hs, and most, if not all Catholic HSs in STL have a “Ring Dance”, or “Junior Ring” dance. Most of the girls in D’s hs get a class ring because there is a great ceremony in the evening for the parents/family to go to. Each girl asks someone special to them to present their ring to them; obviously each girl orders her own ring, but they don’t see them until that night! Some choose a parent, sibling, or a teacher. Our D chose a close friend who was a senior. Girls and their presenter and the junior girls’ parents usually go out to dinner in groups before the ring ceremony. The girls are asked to submit a picture long before that night, for the slide show, usually a baby/toddler pic, and the slide show alternates between their baby/toddler picture to a recent picture…I used a lot of tissues that night!

Rings themselves can cost as much as you want to pay. Lucky for us she selected the minimal crest ring with her name, grad year, and I think musical notes on one side and their mascot on the other. Lots of pictures on FB with their rings and their friends, and then the ring dance.

For girls who choose not to buy a class ring - they still participate, and I believe one girl’s presenter gave her a toy ring, for fun. I wondered about that and our D said that there were some that just didn’t want one and that’s what they did. The neatest part of that night was seeing the slide show and seeing who the girls selected to present their ring. Great Kodak moment! Also, I like that they make it kind of a big deal, so it’s not just order the ring and wear it when you get it, like it was when I was in hs.

OK - quickly posting so i can be the #13,000 poster!!! lol
…for our Class of 13ers!!

our2girls - that sounds lovely. Such a nice tradition.

TV: sounds like a lot to cram into one day. S13 announced that he is “hanging” with friends this afternoon after the SAT. He completed his NMSF application (our school required everything to be complete yesterday so they could do the school part for those who went through with the rest of the application) last week but still has supplements for CA & others.

Do you know when they get the results from today’s SAT? He seemed anxious this morning but I think he will be fine. He just needs to “validate” his PSAT score. Hope it goes well for S13 & others taking the test today.

No class rings for us. They still sell them but (thankfully) it is not the tradition in our school to purchase them. No ceremony or memory worthy event associated with rings. Our2girls: your tradition sounds lovely.

TVenee: o.k. I’m reading the posts backward & just read your post from yesterday morning. We are all thinking of you & feeling for you. I hope that everything goes well with your pregnancy. For my 3rd child, I was put on bedrest at 28 weeks. After 2 weeks of doing my best, D was born at 30 weeks - I really felt cheated since I loved being pregnant. She is 12 now & has some issues: gross motor on the low end of normal, eye issues common in premies & heightened anxiety. On the other hand she looks at the world from such a different place it is refreshing. Particularly after ADD S13 & super ADHD S15. Hope you are taking everything in stride (as best you can). Warm thoughts & BIG HUG to you.

Oh my goodness!!! After the debacle of my D’s ACT scores, she received an acceptance letter today from Coastal Carolina University!!! She is walking on air, and I feel a huge sense of relief. Of course, she still has the theatre interview/portfolio review to tackle, but just to have a general acceptance is wonderful. Granted there are other schools that hold her interest, but CCU is a definite possibility! She will still retake ACT/SAT and will still submit her letter from her AP regarding the scores and not taking it as indication of the kind of student she is, but this is pretty awesome!

I completed the CSS Profile today. It’s pretty easy when nearly everything is zero  I emailed the NCP link to my ex-husband and told him the deadline for completion is 11/15. I didn’t want to give him too much time to forget.

S is thinking about applying ED to Hamilton. That freaks me out a bit, but it’s one of the few initiatives he’s taken with regard to college, so I’ll support him.

How do today’s testers think they did?

Awesome news ugadog!!!

Re: Homecoming invites. My S has invited five girls (all good friends) over to our house to play Trivial Pursuit. He has re-written all the questions to be trivia about him (yes, he’s an egotist.) The winner wins a date with him to Homecoming. Of course, in actuality, they all win as he is going with them all as a group. Apparently, the winner gets the mum. I would be appalled at this, except I know all the girls and they adore my son. I think he has taken all but one of them to a previous dance. I’m sure they will all have fun. Except apparently, our football team is in trouble with the state board for a fight on the field this week. The coaches have to go to Austin to see if we’re getting a suspension. May not be an actual football game for Homecoming…

D13 just home from the SAT test. She says “I think I did about the same as last time, maybe a bit worse because the band was practicing outside our window the whole time”

Hellllooooo…that was poor planning on someone’s part! I think my kid concentrates fairly well even with distractions, but for those kids who don’t, this is really unfair!

Uga. Congradts!!!

D called at 11 done with SAT Subject tests. Thought language wasn’t as bad as she was told. Math not bad either.
Hope all who took it today did great !

Worked outside today and I’m fried!!!
Cold wet and windy.

Hey 'rents!

I roadtripped it (again) with my best friends to go take my FINAL standardized test todayyy! Okay, I still have to take my AP exams, but in my head they really don’t count as much as the SATs and ACTs right now. I didn’t think it was that bad at all, though. Even the math-something I struggle with. I thought that the essay was a little bit…much. But hey, whatever, I’m done!

Tonight after work I’m applying to four of my schools (since I only have four fee waivers right now) and then tomorrow I have homecoming parade float decorations and signs to make! Thennnnnn on Monday I’m going back to Barnard (: I’m so excited!

I’m losing track of this thread… UGA and anybody else I may have missed CONGRATS!

Just back from a trip to Miami University. High marks for both faculty and student presentations. Good tour. Great dining hall food. Campus wasn’t too busy but it was very cold during the majority of our tour. I’m guessing most students were snuggled up in their beds. I know I would have been. The only part I didn’t like is that when we sat down to eat an admin lady came over and asked to join us. We just wanted to sit and process and she was all up in our business. I know she was just doing her job but I wish she would have just stopped by to see if we had any questions like she did everybody else. I hope she just sat with us at random and we weren’t picked out or something. Anyhow, DD13a’s application is ready to go except for the honors college essay. She will be submitting that sometime this week hopefully. I’m curious to know how their automatic merit will work out for us. I did mention that DD13a already has a full ride in-state. Is that something I should shut up about right now? Idk…

First acceptance today for DD!!

Congrats, socialdramamama’s D!

Mine thinks he did OK, wasn’t super easy ,wasn’t super difficult. SAT Chem.
Hanging all day in state capitol for filming…then ARML…then more filming.
And here I was hoping on submitting some apps. or at least test scores.

Stupid question - when you submit scores before your app. is in - will they still connect it quite easily? I am soooooo afraid things will get lost…

Now back to the kitchen I go…

Nice to see you back, Kelowna. We sent test scores in the summer, but S’13 is just now starting to get apps in. No problems so far - it’s as if they’ve been in their system waiting to an app to get matched up with them! Some schools sent emails when the scores arrived.

All of the schools my son sent scores to in May still have them. I emailed admissions to check. They all got back to me in a matter of days.
