Wow, I go run a couple of errands and this place explodes!

Triplets? thud Y’all are the Costco of the College Search. Bulk is the way to go! ;)

I try to get ds in bed close to 10. He has to leave the house at 5:30 for cross country so most nights he’s getting about seven hours of sleep. Not my preference, but I can live with it. And on the weekends he has early-morning Saturday meets and on some Sundays he has an early-morning fund-raiser for his soccer team. And, of course, he works. The rare days that he can sleep in, we let him.

Ds has had a FB since eighth grade, I think. It was pretty much a necessity for school.

Ds reports his talk with the adcom went well. No details.

wahoo, so sorry to hear about the boy. This is one reason I don’t freak out over ds’s occasional B. I think kids put enough pressure on themselves. I want him learning but not obsessively so. And happy. He’s doing a lot, and something’s got to give. Often it’s his motivation around challenging classes. But, to me, it’s not worth arguing about. He knows the consequences of spending more time with friends and less time with the books. And it’s not like he’s doing nothing. He is BUSY. Just not always on what I’d prefer. Oh well.

Welcome, billthakid! I know there are more kids out there lurking - I wish they’d just join in. Just not allowed in the basement! :)

billy -there have been several Pitt acceptances reported (my son included). My son also received his honors packet and auto-admission into MS-Engineering program (to which he did NOT apply. lol) Nothing on scholarships yet, but not expecting anything until next month or later. My son also applied to Georgia Tech this week. What is your intended major?

For the kids that have early morning practices . . . are those two-a-days, or is the morning the only practice? The only time my son has early morning practice is for two-a-days over Christmas break.

Stress and sleep issues here too. It doesnt help that D has a fall sport. D is so exhausted that she went to bed at 9 and I had her sleep in this morning and go to school late. I need her healthy more than anything else!

No we have two-a-days, and depending on whether you are a sprinter, a mid distance or a long distance swimmer, you decide (with the coach) how many practices a week to go to. Of course, there is also weight room/dry training if you want as well.

Christmas break is pretty much two a days for everyone, all distances.

And yes, it is brutal going to early practice, then school, then more practice then homework. I don’t know how they function.

wahoo, very sad to hear about the boy in your area. As for our twin D’s, I hope they end up at the same destination. If my D had any time at all, I wish she could help yours with calc. She is a wiz at math. It is AP English and AP Government that gives her fits. It was AP English/history that helped her to her first B+'s last year. She brought them up to As second semster though and these are some of the grades she is most proud of. It’s all about the perspective.;)

Annie, I am with you. Health first. My D is not in season for HS, but she is for club… and practices are a five-hour endeavor Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. I am so tired of hearing how she’s exhausted and doesn’t have enough time for schoolwork because of training, but then when i say “don’t go” I’m told she has to go. Why, I don’t quite know. 15 hours a week during the evenings is crazy, and she’s not playing in college (well, IM or club maybe but not for a college). I just shake my head.

Welcome billy! I can’t decide if I should submit University of Pittsburgh’s application now, or wait to include LoRs (which could take until Nov. 1). I at least got my nmf app done, and my school finished their part too.

Facebook: I’ve had a facebook for ages, it’s been really helpful. I started moderating it a couple years ago though so it should be fine. I realized I have one picture of myself with alcohol (it was overseas and legal) which I will definitely hide from my profile.

Bedtime: It varies, a lot. Usually 11-12, sometimes 2-3. If I get too tired I’ll wake up at 5 to do homework then. I have a feeling that it’ll be closer to 1-2 AM now until November first… :(

mommydearest:…for now 2 a days, 3 days a week (5:45-7:30am, then 3:30-5:15pm), and only the 3:30-5:15pm the other 2 days…and of course Sat 7-9am
It’s a lifestyle

Welcome everyone new! We are just on a roll with conversation, questions and congratulations. I am sooo sorry to hear of the pressure our kids are on, and of that boy. Soooo Sad!

mommydearest - similiar to vandeyes - 2 a days MWF 5am-6:20 and then 3:45-6:15 and just afternoon TTH and then 8-11 on Saturday. Yeah the only sport that practices 9 times a week!!! I often encourage skipping Wed AM - coach is somewhat understanding. My DD has decided not to swim in college although she could if she wanted to - I don’t blame her but she wants to get back to the State meet and national meet for her club. My DS15 at this point is DEFINITELY (according to him) swimming in college so we have 2 more years of this!!!
We also had no idea what we were getting into when we started this 10 years ago!!!

Wow. I will take soccer any day over swimming. It’s too dark to train at 4:30 AM and the county likely wouldn’t go for paying for lights then… Yikes. Your kiddos impress me.

Mommydearest - Both S and D swim two a days WF 5:00-6:30am and 5:00-7:00 pm and one a days MTTh 4:00-7:00pm and Sat 8:00-10:00am. They occasionally skip if they have several tests the same day or a lot of homework. They have both learned to study ahead if possible. Around this time of year they reach maximum training intensity and physical exhaustion can be a problem. They are both training for the State meet as well as Junior Nationals in Dec.

Are the swimmers doing their own training program without a coach? Here, they cant officially start HS practices until 11/1. So S13 does club in fall and spring. They dont have any morning practices, only every day after school. Once Varsity starts up, theyll do Saturdays too its about 20 hours a week with meets. It is a physically exhausting sport I make S13 eat protein bars and drink protein shakes to keep weight on.

S13 has now received his second email from the water polo coach at C@ltech. Its funny because my son has only ever done intramural water polo. Anyone else getting odd recruiting emails/calls?

MommyDearest; Yes! My sons both got the email from the Caltech waterpolo coach! We all get a huge laugh out of that one! They both played JV, but can barely swim! I told them they should send a funny reply since they aren’t even intending on applying to Caltech.

An adcom from a HMFR told D at her college prep class last summer that they hire a company that googles and checks Facebooks and reports back to admissions. I’m still skeptical, but that’s what he told the kids.

D got 100% on her first college exam today and has A’s in her other classes including AP Calculus. She submitted app #2 today and is plugging along on essays. She’s calm and cool so I’m staying the heck out of her way!

The funniest: my two are usually in bed by 9pm. They love to sleep!

I am completely jealous of your kids (the ones who go to bed so early). I wish I had that option! Of course, that’s more so my own fault since I’m running around and out of the house until about 8-9 pm, and then have to do tons of hours of studying and homework. Like some of your kids, I don’t sleep too often. Neither do my peers, though, since we all take very demanding schedules. Out of all my friends, though, I get the least sleep. Throughout the day they refer to me many times as “the nocturnal one”. Oh well!

We have a half day tomorrow! I’m sooooooo happy! A real stinker though is that next week, rather than having the morning off and coming in at 11:45 since the sophomores and juniors are taking the psat and the freshmen are taking the practice capt (CT’s state testing), seniors have to report to school at 9 and we’ll be in Naviance sessions for two and a half hours because everyone is messed up. The teachers, guidance counselors, and us students really don’t have much of a clue as to what we’re doing. I mean, I know what I’m doing for the most part (I think), it’s just everyone else, per usual haha

DD is also out of the house till about 9pm every night. She goes to bed anywhere between midnight and 2am! It is nuts. there really is no truth to the idea that anyone cares about balance…
DD DID upload her CA essay!!

D is never in bed before 11 this year, and when she has heavy homework/ study nights, it’s later than that. With sports, she doesn’t get home til 6 on early days and closer to 8 on late days. The problem is, D is definitely a person who needs more sleep - if she isn’t getting 8-9 hours a night, it builds up and she’s exhausted.
