Parents of the HS Class of 2013

My kids all have facebooks. They are not allowed to use their picture in their profile picture until they are 18 and out of the house. Their security settings are set very high, and we have access to everything. (Execpt for the oldest - 23 and in the workforce - obviously she does what she wants).

Hi, I’ll introduce myself.

I live in Denver metro area, and I have not one, but three high-school senior sons. Triplets that is.

Although me and my wife are used to go through milestones on a triple-basis (and since we don’t have other children that is the only way we know it), preparing everything that concerns college has been really a challenge.

Welcome UpperV!

There are a bunch of us with twins on here and we feel your pain. This whole process is exhausting!

I’m jealous of all the rolling admit schools. We won’t know anything for DD13a until after 12/1. DD13b has her one rolling admit acceptance but again, it doesn’t matter until the audition. We did find out yesterday from the CCM adcom that the faculty does not wait until all the auditions are complete to let kids know if they are accepted/rejected/on hold. The adcom said the decision could come within a week or so of the audition. Of course DD13b LOVED CCM. Sigh. 700 kids audition for 24 or so acceptances with the target goal of 18 students (9 women, 9 men). Could she have picked out a program that was HARDER to get into?!!! argh.

HOLY MOLY!!!
God bless you UpperValley…and welcome :D

Welcome UpperValley - I cant imagine going through this process times three, but I have the feeling that every step in their development must be challenging times three so hopefully this is no worse than anything else.

Asmuoh - thats why my favorite saying is “next life my children don’t swim!!” and I mean it too. The early mornings, no vacations during swim seasons, etc. - its so much more than we expected.

bed time? my daughter gets up early for swim practice and stays up late struggling with BC calc - she is in a permanent state of sleep deprivation. I actually stepped in and cancelled her morning practice for her today. She is falling apart between stress, exhaustion, school work and college apps. Its too much! I hope she gets into a college she loves and has an amazing 4 years, I really think she deserves it.

Bed time~ In our house this ranges from 10:30 to 2am depending on HW and project load :frowning:
The earliest the kids get home from school is 6:30 so by the time the shower and eat, HW usually doesn’t start until around 8:30…

Facebook~ We have had the great debate about this in our household MANY, MANY times. Both kids have had FB since Freshman year. I was their first “friend” and Grandma was second. They are very good about deleting inappropriate comments from friends immediately. And both are aware of the pictures that are put on there or that they are “tagged” in.

On the Essay front~ Happy to say that Jr has only (2) smaller essays left for his app for HMFR #1. From the (4) total he needs, he can then use them for HMFR #2 and semi-HMFR #3. Sadly, those are the only 3 schools he is applying to :frowning: :(

Thanks :)

Actually we don’t have any other children, so we don’t know any other way. Sometimes we joke with the kids they should all have each one child only, at 3-year minimal intervals, so that we can see our grandchildren growing up one at a time.

lol. ok, I hope this is significantly better than potty training times three! :)

Welcome, UpperValley! Are they at least looking at the same schools?

I’m not sure if that’s worse or if it’s worse for those that have to go through the process 2-3 years in a row! I have nine years before I have to do it again - is it terrible that I hope my D is slightly more average? :X

re: the social media question. Take a look at this brief article. [Higher Education Quick Takes | Inside Higher Ed](<a href=“Quick Takes | Inside Higher Ed”>Quick Takes | Inside Higher Ed)
You can tell which one I’m referring to. My job has such a block on that named site that I can’t even look at the article…lol.

I have a swimmer as well…definitely aim for 10pm crash time
Had near tragedy on Ss team last spring when a teammate fell asleep at the wheel, totaled car on way to 5:45am practice…really lucky to be alive…still swimming of course…

Just submitted my pitt app. Now on to Georgia Tech for 10/15 and 3 more Nov. 1. Is pitt already releasing decisions and scholarship info?

Welcome, Upper Valley! My sympathies on dealing with this x 3…
Blueshoe, for the umpteenth time I’m convinced we have twins. My D is stressing madly about her classes. She’s pretty certain she will have a B+ in Calc. That will be her first ever. I feel so bad for her with the stress. I think she’s regretting the load too but at the same time, there weren’t really options about them either. The apps are “more” under control after Monday but by no means complete. As to bedtime, that is always, always after 11. Often well after midnight.
MommyDearest, I’m not sure not having the top stats is better. Ask me in a year, but my S is a 2014 and we’re looking too… around here at least its either 3.8+ for schools or they admit anyone who can apply (that’s a slight stretch, but not too far off). The threads for 3.3-3.6 kids are definitely useful. I really, really don’t want him going to a huge party school, and a lot of the ones his stats would make safeties are exactly that…

Vandy~ Jr’s Freshman an older boy he played Football with rolled his SUV after coming home from a game one night. He too fell asleep at the wheel…thankfully, came out with only a few bumps and bruises.

I worry so much about them not getting enough sleep. We have a long standing rule, that if you get up late from a long night of studying, I call the attendance office to have them excused from being late to school. The last thing they need to do is try to speed getting to school on time while still being half asleep!! Thankfully, I have only had to do it twice over the past 4 years.

Trying to catch up on the posts

Congrats Swizzle!

Hi to all the new posters!

UpperValley - I have trip. nephews. I am in awe of parents of trips!

Oh. Meant to mention this. Horrible story. Senior at a high school near us disappeared last Monday (10/1). Dropped his brother at school, went to park… except he didn’t and ended up at Dunkin Donuts, and then went to a baseball field near there, with woods nearby… had been studying for SATs, playing football, etc etc, by all accounts a normal kid with no obvious issues… they found his body in the woods on Monday. They said there is “no public threat”, which indicates perhaps suicide… which is so sad. These kids are under so much pressure and there is no time for them to be able to step back from it. The ECs require tons of time… classes are getting harder and the work loads are immense… the pressure to cram for the last standardized tests is astronomical… and then there are the applications themselves. I remember senior year being fun. I don’t think our kiddos are having much fun. Maybe that will change once applications are all in…

Wahoo~ This just breaks my heart!! And yes, I agree that it seems like our kids aren’t having much fun :frowning: Praying that all changes once the apps are in…

89 - so sorry to hear that. We are still dealing with that here on our home front…oh and I feel bad because I had said it was a bullying incident here. That was the conclusion all of my kids friends had jumped to. It was personal issues. Which just makes all this stress more frightening to me.

Welcome to upperV!

Congrats to Billy sending in Pitt app…do we have four students on our thread? billy, napalm, swizzle and golf(something - sorry) - I forget…any more?

89 wahoo - SO sad!! It really isn’t worth it that much, ya know? I wish the stress wasn’t so much for the kids, but I also wish they didn’t think that was the answer :(

mommaof5–DS has 7 in the door (of 10) and DD has 6 of 9.

Upper Valley-- I at least have folders with 2 pockets to keep all of the twin’s stuff organized, not sure about adding a 3rd. Good luck. We did have a set of quad graduate last year from our school, 4 separate schools in 4 different states—not sure I am organized enough for that.

Walker–I’m glad we don’t have to go through the auditions on top of everything. A lot of their friends are music majors so we’ve seen all of that through them. DS may audition for band at one or two schools simply because they give good money and the programs aren’t all that competitive. We had two music/theater kids at our school last year go through this and it was fun to watch on the sidelines but glad I was not their parent or THEM. Very stressful. Both ended up at Julliard, which is amazing considering the size classes there. The one boy in particular was amazingly talented dance, singing, acting, production, choreography, etc. It will be interesting to see our theater productions this year since he was such a big part of them in the past.

89wahoo–tough times in your area lately, Yikes.

Talked to admissions at a couple schools to get some numbers nailed down for DD. The one woman wasn’t so sure about things and wasn’t going to give information but someone in the office must have overheard her because she put me on hold and then came back with guaranteed numbers. She just needs final numbers from the coach there.

Bedtime is usually by 10:00 for DS and 11:00 for DD. DS is an early to rise kind of kid and just can’t stay up that late when he has to get up early for school. They have more homework than they have had in past years but still nothing unmanageable. They only have a couple weeks of marching band left which is bittersweet-sad to be done but glad to have the extra time. They aren’t as busy in the winter and then spring gets busy again.
