Really Galaxy? Our seniors are required to do job shadowing. If they don’t complete it and/or don’t turn in the signed form from the place they shadow it’s considered an unexcused absence.

RobD - the seniors at our D’s HS also job shadow when the rest of the classes are testing :)

Much Ado- I have a picture by my computer of my baby in her Hanna Anderssen clothes!
17 years has flown by!

Great news today! D’s Native American tribe offers scholarships for two of her schools that pay COA minus the institutional awards. They told me on the phone today that she will get priority for these scholarships because of her involvement in their college prep classes. Wahoo!

DH and I bought winemaking equipment at a neighbor’s yard sale and have a batch started. Great news for Wine Wednesday! LOL

EZ, that is great news!

For anyone traveling on college visits (or any other travel), Southwest is having a 2-day, 40% off sale for travel in early December and Jan 7-Feb 14. I just rebooked some flights and saved a lot (some credit for future travel and some rewards points back). There are a few airport restrictions.

I love all of this great news … Woot woot!! Congrats to everyone!

Great news EZ!

Mamabear, thanks for the flight sale info … Going to check out SWA right now.

Good news here also.
- D hammered out her first real applications essays and pressed send on app # 4 today for her earliest admission deadline (non-rolling admin). Heck yeah!!!
- attended school college workshop. Pointless for us, but it was sponsored by their NHS chapter and D is an officer. She did her portion on scholarship apps and then we headed to a …
- 5-college tour presentation. This really lit a fire … But now D has added one school back on her list … and eliminated another. LOL!
- received 2 college acceptances today: University of Alabama and UAHuntsville. Woo hoo!!!

Anyway … Exhausted and heading to bed. Last night’s insomnia has caught up with me!

Take care everyone!

Ezilyamused–great news!!!

Galaxyfigment–that is a great idea for the schools during PSAT days. I might have to suggest that to our school!! The freshmen do a retreat that day so they are not in school, the sophomores and juniors are taking the PSAT and the senior have class :D.

Good morning parents! Senior year has been in place for a little over a month and life has been crazy for my D. She probably is regretting at least one (maybe two) of her five AP classes at this point. She also plays a fall sport and it takes up a massive amount of time. Auditions for regional orchestra were two weekends ago and all county orchestra and the fall concert at her school are week after next. The rehearsal for the school concert conflicts with a game against a huge regional rival and all county orchestra is the same night as the district championship. She is on a music contract and therefore is required to attend these events. They will not allow her to do an alternate activity, so she will miss the district championship in her senior year. This is so upsetting to her, but there is nothing that can be done…except praying for rain so the championship game will be postponed!

On the college front, D has applied to two oos safeties. One is both an academic and financial safety and she has been accepted. She already had a provisional acceptance at the other school and a decision is expected in February. I don’t know if the money will be there for that school, but it fits her personality. She is also applying early action with 11/1 deadlines to two instate schools, one of which is her #1 choice. She has completed the common app essay and one of the two supplement essays for #1 and says she is pushing the button this weekend on both it and the other school where she still needs to complete the personal statement. I hope she gets this done, but I don’t know because the homecoming dance and football game are also this weekend.:)

My D also put NHS in the activities section of the common app. She didn’t have room in the honors section and she is also president and wanted to include that.

Congratulations to all who are receiving good news about acceptances and scholarships. Rock on '13ers!

Ez, congrats!

Praying for rain for your dd, blue. I don’t know how they do it all, but I know ds WANTS to do it all. Today, x-country at 6 a.m., NHS mtg, college visit, FCA mtg – and that’s all before noon. Oh, and school has to be worked in there at some point. AND last night he tells me that he’s leading the pep rally this week. Argh.

Good luck to everyone for all the good news.

EZ: great news on both the COA and the wine making!

89: hope D is o.k. now. doesn’t sound like a fun birthday but definitely a memorable one!

SteveMA: yes, call the office. I went to a program at a neighboring HS & all the college reps said that it not only O.k. for parents to call about FA, the schools expect it & welcome the chance to discuss any potential package.

tx5athome: S13 is having the same AP physics/calculus issue EXCEPT the physics teacher is NOT teaching the calculus - he told S13 to watch a youtube video…
S13 has a stomach ache today- maybe it is the stress. I am normally a “go to school & try” mom but I figure that next year he will be on his own & make these decisions without me so I left it up to him. I am at work; he is on the couch. I want his apps done (so far only 1 submitted). He keeps removing schools from his list which at the moment has a total of 4 schools on it. I guess that is o.k…just makes me a little nervous. I hope we can complete the common app & supplements by this weekend. Then only 1 other non-CA school & his stress will be greatly reduced, I hope!

Keep the good news coming…makes me feel hopeful! Congrats to all who have acceptances/scholarships.

Congrats on all the accomplishments – we are really rockin’ and rollin’ now!

I’m so glad S’13’s varsity sport is a winter sport since most of his colleges have Oct 15/Nov 1 deadlines for scholarship consideration – I can’t imagine him doing a Varsity sport right now. Glad he decided not to do cross country. S’13 is in a club sport, work weekends, leads a community service group, and is doing research at a local university – on top of his 4 APs and 2 DEs (and Art.) He’s also become the schools unofficial Physics/Calc tutor. Oh, his AP Calc teacher is also giving S and a few other students extra work so they can actually do Calc BC, while the rest of the class does AB – not sure how that’s going to work. His club sport is a little more flexible – Varsity starts up on Nov 1 – he’ll really have no life then!

NHS – I think it makes sense as an activity if you’re an officer or spend a lot of time on it. S’13 had lots of activities, but only a few honors, so he put it there.

AP LIT – so what have your kids read so far? S’13 has done 1984, Jane Eyre, Beowolf, Bartleby, Jekyll & Hyde, and now Dracula. S’13 had already read most of these, but it doesn’t seem to be helping him. He has a 90% with 2.5 weeks left in the quarter – an A is 95%.

FINANCIAL AID – I will be making those calls. Our situation is way too complicated for S’13 to deal with alone. Aid is based primarily on OUR income and assets – only makes sense for me to do the talking.

STRESS – I’m so sorry to hear about all the stress these kids (and parents) are experiencing. No lost sleep here. S’13 is Mr. Chillax as usual. I’m like RobD – S’13 already has an acceptance and scholarship for a place that I know he’d be happy at and is affordable, so it’s all good.

BIRTHDAYS – Happy Birthday to all the kiddos turning 18 (or 17)! My son is one of the younger ones – won’t be 18 until just about the end of the school year.

RobD – never saw Supernatural, but that is pretty funny!

Another question . . . how late do your kids stay up studying? My son told me that the Val of his class says he stays up until about 1:30am every night. My son’s lights go out about 10-10:30 every night. He says he needs his beauty sleep. :)

Hello all -

Just popping in to say Congrats! to Swizzle. It must feel very good to ‘have the ball rolling’ so to speak.

I am sorry for all of the Ds and Ss that are stressing. It really does seem like a ridiculous process. I officially hate the Common App for multiple reasons. SteveMA - did you ever get an answer as to how students can check their ‘status’ after they’ve applied to Common App schools?

MD13…

My son is the same way. In bed by 10pm or so. He has never been much of a study person or worrier. He does the minimum required to get by. I have never seen him actually study for an exam. I think it may bite him freshman year in college, live and learn.

Thanks for the prayer YDS. They usually hold this event on a weekend, but it was moved to a weekday because the school it is being held at did not want to pay a janitor for the weekend. Grr…

SteveMa - OK your kids rock!!! What is it up to now like 4 or 5 acceptances each!?! DS hasn’t heard a word yet for his one rolling, but they did send a letter promising to let him kow by 11-6…uggg

Ezilyamused & carimama - Congrats!!!

MommyDearest - I have been going to bed before DS, so I actually have no idea how late he is staying up. He is in a fall varsity sport, pres of a youth community foundation, church youth group leader and NHS member, so that plus TONS of homework & college apps have pretty much left him with no life currently.

As far as what time the lights go out for my kids - it depends on the night - my kids are swimmers and 3 days a week they have 5AM practice so they are in bed if possible by 10PM. On the other two days it is usually 11. Sunday nights are hard because Sunday is the only day they can sleep past 6:30AM so getting to bed early enough to get up at 4:15 is difficult! It exhausts me!! Not to mention they have practice after school until 6:30 every evening and three hours on Sat morning!!! Good thing they love the kids they swim with!!!

Morning all!

Congrats to all the acceptances!!! This board is on a roll!

Youdontsay, after seeing all the responses to the question, I wondered if I should do more. I posed the question to my daughter and she basically gave the same answer as your son ;o).

Question to all of you (and this may have been discussed before) do colleges peek at prospective students Facebook pages? I was so reluctant to let D13 have one, she didn’t get it till her Junior year. She’s very trustworthy and I’m friended as well. It’s nice, as there’s pics of our family life, her life, snapshots from important accomplishments etc. Do your kids have one?

I envy those with kids hitting the sac at 10! I don’t know when D13 has ever been to bed that early, in the last 3 years. Sometimes she just can’t stay awake, so she naps, sets her alarm and gets up to work. She has to be at school at 6:45.

LOL on the bedtime. Bedtime has been something that has always been a hard and fast rule at our house. 10:00 pm on weekdays in HS. Midnight curfew on weekends, but they can stay up quietly.

I knew that D2 would not hold to the 10:00 bedtime when she went off to college, but the pattern is pretty strong. I’ve noticed that she crashes out around 11:30 at the latest on weeknights.

Good Morning!!

MommyD13: I think our boys are twins. My son is Mr. Chillax. He is generally done with homework before 10, but last night was up past 11 because he watched Parenthood with me and then had to watch Tosh.0 that he DVR’d. He generally is up at 6AM for 7AM zero period Student Government. They have read a lot of books so far in AP Lit, but I am not sure which ones. AP Lit is currently at an 89.8, whereas the rest of his classes are solid A’s. And he doesn’t turn 18 until late July!

Facebook: Yes S3 has a facebook. His cousin suggested he change his name during college application season, so he did.

My dd has a facebook but NEVER posts anything but dance pictures! I think that is safe because she always wears classy dresses! It’s all on Twitter now at my house!
