Parents of the HS Class of 2013

RobD–that is probably what I will end up doing. We are meeting at her house. I told her about various search engines, Collegeboards, etc. that she was not aware of so maybe I can show her how “we” searched for schools and what we looked for in test scores, etc.

I think they are probably better students then their test scores show, but still not engineering candidates. The high school they attend isn’t the best school, ok, but not as challenging as others in the area and I think that makes a difference in test scores. Most kids there will get through pre-calc senior year, for example, where as our district and the other neighboring district, most of the kids are taking AP calc senior year. They just aren’t exposed to the material that the kids in our school were by the time they took the ACT.

Sorry to jump in, but I was just wondering that too. Since their class rigor may not have prepared them for the ACT, have they considered the SAT? But wow, it’s already October of senior year. It’s always tough when someone asks for advice and they don’t seem informed yet. Yikes!

CA question: DS was all ready to push the send button until he got to the LOR section and the LOR he really wants to send doesn’t look like it’s been loaded yet. He’s seen the LOR because the teacher had him check it to make sure everything was right. It is really good but especially great when talking about his ECs which one is really a neat program and there are not that many of them out there and he is president this year. He just stopped and decided to wait to submit app until that one is loaded. Can you select a teacher who hasn’t submitted their LOR yet and it will get sent later?

And I have a Naviance LOR question. Can you tell if the teacher has done it? The status where you select the teacher still says requested. Does it change?

Yes, mommaof5, he can. S’13 submitted applied to Case with 3 LORs - only two were loaded at that time. Case downloaded his application, school eval, and LORs the next day. The third teacher loaded his LOR a few days later. The very next day, S saw that Case downloaded that LOR.

MommyDearest - thank you! I wish I would have asked this last night! :)

Yeah, we were kinda wondering how it was going to work. The instructions said the app could be submitted before the GC/LORs were loaded. In S’13’s case, the two LORs that he cared most about were there, so he decided to go ahead with fingers crossed. lol

Our kids submitted apps via the common APP in September (6th to be exact). Transcripts and LOR for DS were sent yesterday–page back a few pages for the saga why but short story, you do not need to send everything at once :D.

reeinaz- Naviance will tell you when the LOR is turned in. It changes from “requested” to received or submitted or something like that - I can’t remember.

Steve: It also might be a good idea when conversing with your friend to bring up the “what can your kid live without in college” idea. Both my D’s would love to swim, even on an intermural team, but they decided that was something they may have to give on if everything else they want is in place. Of course with my DD13b, she is slowly tumbling to the fact that she will not be able to swim on any sort of team with her major :).

I just logged on the CA to see about the payment thing . . . all but one of S’13’s schools require the supplement or app be submitted before payment can be made. So much for that idea!

I am about to burn all the calendars in my house and delete my calendar app on my phone. I am convincing myself that those drastic measures will slow or stop time marching on… I feel a little crazed today.

Welcome Rachel. yes, we parents are a bit over-the-top compared to most, in knowing about the college process (or think we know it!)

DD went to bed at 11pm last night! I think the first time since school started. She is worried about her grades this marking period because they get sent to the schools; I tried to reassure her that as long as she does her best and is in the typical range of grades she’s always had (or better, if possible, but I did not say that) then the colleges are not going to hold it against her. I think they are really looking at rigor, at this point, right? And that the kids are not slacking…?
about CA: Do you think it matters exactly when you submit everything, if one is NOT applying early?

drmom123–as everything, it depends on the school. Some schools put you in the dorm pool via application date, others do it by dorm deposit date, etc. Some school just accept kids until they are full so it’s best to get applications into those schools early, even for regular decision applications. Some schools are full by December. It’s something you do want to find out. I know one school DS applied to stressed getting applications in as early as possible, rolling admissions, because they take them on a first come/first serve basis. I know of kids that should have been easy accepts to this school that did not get in because they waited too long. Most schools our kids applied to said that by Feb 1st they are full and aren’t accepting other applications.

No school today for the kids but they have all day band practice.

Tonight is senior night for the football game. I keep getting teary eyed every time I think that this is his last night ever playing on his home football field. :frowning: Moms wear their S’s away jersey’s and parents escort them onto the field. Good thing I bought some water-proof mascara!

mommaof5—its all of these type of things that make this year all that much harder. We have a week of marching band left. This has been a part of our kids’ lives for 10+ years (watching older siblings and now them). It’s going to be very hard on them. DD has played for her coach on the high school team since 7th grade and for 2 years before that for summer camps, etc. THAT is going to be REALLY hard. But, then they have all the new things to look forward to next year. I just skip the mascara :D.

Awww, mommaof5 . . . in the words of Dr. Seuss “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

SteveMA: Regarding advice to the friend - Do you know any engineers who can talk with that student about the types of jobs involved with engineering companies? Accounting, technical sales, specialty testing with expensive equipment (with people with technical degrees and training, but maybe not PE’s), organizational/logistical management, operations, IT, etc. These students might have other strengths that might lead them to related majors which could also be useful in technical firms (assuming their interest is to be involved with this type of company).

Teacher LOR done!!! YAY! She just emailed a copy to S2’s college email account (which I have access to). It was very glowing - not just about him as a student but also about his character. One step closer to having completed applications.

1Rachel - WELCOME! I was a student whose parents did not pay for app fees, know test scores or see my college til move in. I think that is why I’m overly involved.

@Napalm - I’d jump on the ASU fly in! My son has not gotten it.

I’m trying to ween myself off these boards, esp since I don’t see my son making progress on apps. Homecoming weekend here. Both my boys will be staying up late finishing the Engineering Club projects in time for the competition tomorrow.
