GreekMana - S got two shirts. One grey and one white. We have noticed some things come with S’s abbreviated name which I think is from the PSAT last year and some things come with his full name which I am sure is from the ACT.

BTW…Congrats swizzle! You rock!

Thank you so much everyone! All of you are so nice! (:

@Greekmana Yes! I talked about it briefly (two lines) in my extra curric. essay for the Common App, and I’m talking about it in Barnard’s question about taking risks. I mean it goes perfectly since it’s not every day I get the opportunity to talk in front of thousands of people, arguably the most influential woman in history, and four other women I admire a lot. And then there’s another question on Barnard’s app that I’m weaving it into too.

Update on apps: Submitted to Quinnipiac! Ahhh!

I had a quick question for the common app. For the activities section, when they ask for details and description of the extracurricular activity, can the description be the same as what is on the student’s resume? Or did everyone change the description a little?

Thanks!

Pigmom, We used the free score reports for the oct 6 testing. I am pretty sure AP scores were not on there. It gives you the opportunity to review exactly what (SAT I and II) is going to each school so you can decide who gets what, based on what the particular school’s requirements are.

I think deadlines will vary by school (for scores) and generally high schools send out transcripts. You have to tell them where, though.

Good luck!
–//–
- Should we send the free SAT reports right now? S took SAT II on Oct. 6 and the free reports will be expired on Oct.15th.
- If he points 4 recipients to send his scores, will they receive all the SAT I and II and AP scores?
- When is the latest date that he should send out the scores for ED? He supposed to wait for his score of SAT II coming out this month.
- Who is responsible to send out the school’s transcripts?

I also have a question about the activities section and the common app. S’s ED supplement essay is about an EC and why that makes him a good fit for his ED school, so it would seem to not be a good idea to put that in the CA EC paragraph section. But if he gets rejected ED, he won’t be able to reuse that supplement essay…so that EC might need to be highlighted…can he then re-do that part of the CA and save as a new doc? Does that even make sense?

UNC has been submitted. JMU should go tomorrow. I like her essays and have my fingers crossed D. She seems relieved, which makes me think as soon as UVA goes she will really relax a bit. On top of that, we found a homecoming dress within about 20 minutes of starting to look. On top of THAt, H power washed the deck. A very successful day!

Indeed, wahoo…congrats on all accounts!

MomofNEA, he can create up to 10 versions of the CA. He can change anything he wants on a new version…any attachments will have to be reloaded.

S wrote a mini essay about an ec, meadow. It’s your chance to elaborate in prose form, without the restriction of the resume format.

meadow1234- we reworded it (shortened it) to fit on the CA. It basically says the same thing on the Additional Information section, only more descriptive.

Thanks GreekMana,

I am going back and forth, thinking for some activities to just use same wording as resume. Sometimes on resume, if not as involved in activity, just have short line.

WHere is everybody putting enrichment activities (summer activities that are somewhat academic)? There is no place to put it on the common app as it is not an extracurricular, paid job or volunteer. Right now just on resume, but don’t want it to get lost.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

@Swizzle … Wow!!! Simply WOW!!! That’s an AMAZING experience. Congrats!!!

Swizzle…Great Job and you must feel AWESOME about it!!!

Happy Sunday all!!!
Raining here and gloomy but the sun is going to shine in a few hours :)

Off for D’s overnight at her HMFR school…

Met an admissions director for a top LAC the other night and her words of advise I have to share…
She said …give the app your best shot…don’t take the result personally…there is No way of knowing what the directors of the school who are over the admissions people are looking for in the incoming class…some things are even out of their control…your qualifications may be 100% of the stats…but if this year they want to expand a Dept or bring in more money or expand geographical data or Whatever…things beyond anyones control can take over and a truly qualified candidate may be refused…
So have a good plan with several options…send in the apps and be happy with the results…and whatever you do …Do Not Take It Personally if the dream school isn’t a yes…
I know this has been said several times here…but thought I’d share something that came from the horses mouth :)

swizzle-congratulations! cherish the memory of speaking with such accomplished women who want similar accomplishments for the upcoming generation. Good for you, swizzle. Be sure to include in your apps some essays, media reports of your role in this.

Anna308- I think that’s exactly right, and I don’t think its said enough (especially to the kids). Its hard to tell DD to make every word count, but also know that the process is random too.

Ama308–we’ve been stressing that to our kids as well. It’s not them, it’s the institution, especially DS HMFR, there are 20,000 applicants that “look” just like him, if the dart happens to land on his name, great, if not, oh well, you have a lot of other really good choices.

Ama308 - yes! My d has really started to understand that with her lottery schools and is OK with it. Now the hard part is getting the “outsiders” - the grandparents, aunts, uncles etc that are not entrenched in this process to stop saying “she’ll get in anywhere!”. They think I am being negative when I tell them that she has a small chance of getting in - not because of anything she has done - only because of the admit rates! Oh well.

I have a question - when you submit the CA you have to agree to only send one deposit into a school - is this only for CA schools? DD just got accepted to Auburn with a great scholarship and they only have housing for 65% of the freshmen (not CA) - we are going to visit in a couple weeks. She is as interested in Auburn as her other 7 schools! This seems to be very restrictive and one sided. Any comments?

ahsmuoh - I don’t have an answer for you about the “one deposit.” I totally agree - they can admit 3x as many kids, knowing about 1/3 admitted will attend, and we can only commit to one? In the case of Auburn, is there a separate deposit for “yes, I’ll go” than for housing? I know there are some schools that have two separate deposits, so maybe check on that.

I was taken aback when I saw that…just one more reason I wish D had done the school’s applications for the two schools we included on the CA. I’m not sure if their school applications have the same restrictions, but I wish we had seen that before D completed the entire thing. Our DD’17 probably won’t use the CA for that reason, unless she has a lot of schools that use it, or their fee is waived.

ahsmuoh- I so hear you on the grandparents/outsiders thing! My father keeps asking why she doesnt apply to Harvard? Doesn’t she want to go to Harvard? He thinks that she will get in wherever she applies because of how admissions were when we were younger. I can’t convince them how hard it is now. And its making DD feel really bad.

Anyone else having the problem that everyone wants to know where your kids are applying? I went to a party last night, and people kept asking me. I would say, well she is still deciding, but they keep persisting - “where is she looking?” and “has she thought about…X, Y or Z?” I used to think people posted their school choice on Facebook to boast about thier kids acceptances, but now I think its to get some relief from the endless questioning!

Meadow - you can list summer activities on the CA. There is a box you can select to select summer only. The majority of my son’s ECs were during the summer.
