Parents of the HS Class of 2013

anouilh - yes, a delay I guess, but I can’t help but think if she didn’t make it in during ED, why would she for RD??? The letter states sending them anything new to help make the decision in RD, like mid-term grades and newer SAT’s. We will send midterm grades, but based on her GPA, I can’t see that being the issue. Maybe just showing that she is keeping up with that??? We submitted first quarter grades, and I figured that would show she didn’t have senioritis…yet. They have her Oct SAT’s, and she did not take them again after that.

For those that have success stories in getting in RD after being deferred, any tips on ways to keep the schools aware of any accomplisments or make them stand out? Should she be sending them the small awards/accomplishments?

Jazzii - Haystack is right. Also it depends why your #1 is your #1. Do they have a direct-to-grad option that make them a better investment? One of 3 schools that focus on your major? Etc., etc. Name recognition for undergrad is probably not worth very much more than a lesser-name school. Also, $20K as the tippy top for loans will be significant to pay off. I graduated with half that and it made a big difference in my quality of life when that loan was paid off.

ugadog99 - call your public library (some have good scanners and some don’t) and also if there’s a college near you, their library may have some for the public.

momto2013grad: If they didn’t think your D was a qualified applicant they would have denied admission rather than deferred. Your D could compare very favorably with their RD applicant pool.

Stemfamily - I hope, I hope. Thanks!

Where exactly are we with the 12 drinking days of Christmas/waiting thing??? I think I need a shot of something from each of the days!!

SAT & Deferrals. Does anyone have any experience with this or know if taking the SAT again after a deferral is a good idea? I guess we would wait to see the score and then if it’s better we can notify the school and then send the official scores. I have heard of doing this to get better FA but I don’t know if it’s a “thing” for being deferred. My sons both took the SAT almost a year ago, so I think they could probably both improve just because they have maturity and higher level classes under their belts. Ugggg. Is it really worth it?

Hey 'rents!

Thanks for all the kind words. I really do appreciate it. In the wake of my rejection, I’ve found myself to actually be rather happy and relieved. I was putting myself under so much pressure with this. I’m just happy that I no longer have to avoid the mailman anymore (I was so scared I’d see my letter from Barnard at the wrong time, if that makes sense). I’m happy the waiting game for Barnard is over.

With that said, I’ve decided to apply to George Washington University, American University, and Syracuse. This means that I will have applied to 12 schools at the January 1st deadline.

Soon, I’ll be hearing back from Fordham and Emerson. I’m so excited to hear back from Emerson! I think I will be attending if I get in. That’s exciting! I fit right in with the kids who go there, and it’s really a fantastic school! I want my letter!

Congratulations to all of the acceptances! I’m rooting for all of your children, and I’m so thankful to have all of you rooting for me! One thing’s for sure: Barnard’s sure going to be kicking themselves when I’m an important person one day.

Have a nice night, I’m on my way to go get my chocolate sundae with sprinkles (: [in response to those talking about their favorite ice creams!]

Just able to check back in. Swizzle, count me in as someone who thinks Barnard made a huge mistake. Their loss, GW’s gain. Ds applied there and American and has a friend who’s a freshman at Syracuse and another who’s in for next year.

Greek, I’d say go for it. What could it hurt? Well, if your kids are all in on it. I mean, sounds a bit like a Hail Mary (I hope you’re a football fan), but sometimes you connect and it’s great. I do wish I’d known with ds1 to work harder on showing the love to get off the WL. He was WL’d at his no. 1, and when I was there this fall with ds2 I kept thinking that it was still the perfect place for ds1. Of course, he’s deliriously happy at his current school, so I suppose it all works out as it should.

Not sure I’ve mentioned here, but ds has been on the other side of the world on study abroad and is home tomorrow. I’ll likely be online only sporadically while we visit family for the next few days. And it’ll be hard to type while I’m hugging him. Keep the good news rolling in!

Well, S just hit the submit button on his Vandy Scholarship application. I read his essay, I think it is the best yet. Lets hope the scholarship committee thinks so too. (And the admission department likes him too)

ugadog - Do you have an iPhone or iPad with a camera? Or a digital camera? You could take a digital picture of each sheet/page and email it or download it, crop it and print at 8-1/2 x 11 size. Could that work? Minimal cost, except for ink and paper. Good luck!

Swizzle, I’m a Barnard grad but I did not encourage my D to apply there even though she is much more prepared for college than I was. I’m encouraging her to attend a school where she is higher in the applicant pool where she can be a bigger fish or at least not have to work as hard as I did. You don’t get that 4 years again and college will be more memorable if it isn’t spent 90% of the time reading, studying and writing papers. Here’s hoping that another school will give you a great education AND allow you to be you and have a memorable 4 years.

congrats, Galaxy!! Pressing that button is so FINAL!!

Swizzle - meant to say that I concur with all those they know that Barnard missed out on something great!

And you don’t have to worry about becoming an important person someday, because you are an important person TODAY! :)

a memoir. I figure, this whole online conversation is a memoir…!
extra sprinkles, Swizzle!
I hear Emerson is great. As are all the schools our kids are applying to. “safety’s” targets and reaches…the kids will all do fine wherever they end up. It’s the process that is nutty!

Galaxy! LOL…D2 just hit her submit button on the Vandy application too! However…I thought it was not her best… I made some suggestions that she didn’t use : )
My daughter feels she doesn’t have a chance, But I told her the only sure way to NOT get it was to NOT apply. I think she feels so lucky to have gotten in!

I go out of town for two nights and I am now tryin desperately to catch up! I have six pages to go but while at a stop over at LAX…congrats to all! So proud of you guys and your stellar offspring, including deferrals and redirections!

Swizzle… Keep us posted on all your news! Great attitude! You rock!

Add my S to the list of 11th hour (literally) submissions for the CV scholarship…mediocre essay…

DD is in at Beloit with the maximum merit scholarship! The best thing is that she says that her telephone interviewer made her genuinely interested in the school (I’ve been trying to encourage that feeling for years). After she submits her exchange student essay, it will work out to half price. Glad she has a good alternative in case her more extreme boondoggles don’t work out.

Congrats to everyone and their fantastic kids on their acceptances. Good luck on all the deferrals. And hugs to the “redirections.” It does all work out in the end. Come next May - everyone will have some great choices!!!

D1 arrived home from DC (and I arrived home from a trip to my farm in Arkansas) tonight. We asked her what she wanted for dinner - “meat.” We are from Texas, after all, so we all went out for steaks. I’m stuffed, but feeling great that my whole brood is under one roof. Ready for the holidays!

I’m confused…gap year as an ultimate safety?? My son has had that as his number one pick for some time now.

Nonetheless, at my insistence he has applied and been accepted at several schools as a backup plan in case he doesn’t get accepted for the gap year volunteer program he has applied to.

Sent a major scholarship app off this afternoon…today must be the day for those!

Kelikjake, in the last two years I have seen a couple wonderful, brilliant, talented daughters of friends not didn’t get accepted anywhere at all when applying senior year. Their fallback was to find something to do (or, in one case, to go on the gap year program she had been hoping to do anyway) and reapply. You have made sure that your son doesn’t have do that.

My D2 will probably have at least one school she can choose to attend come fall, but it’s not a certainty. But it is certain that if she doesn’t get in anywhere, she’ll be taking a gap year. Hence her early, non-binding admission to Gap Year University. :-)

Sounds like your son has found something very enticing to do. I’d love to hear more.

Moonpie, I tell that to my S all the time - The only true failure it to not try. The chances are low, but someone will get the scholarship and it won’t be you if you don’t try.

This is probably better appropriate for the Vandy board, but they tend to hate “Chance me” threads over there. S had great scores, and great EC, but that doesn’t really mean much as everyone applying to top schools do. He doesn’t have a hook. It is known that those applying from TN at Vandy seem to have a less likely chance, (even more congrats to Moonpie’s D), but do you think intended major plays a factor. He wants to be a Math teacher. With so few people wanting to be STEM teachers, do you think this might give him an edge at Vandy and possibly UChicago.

Can you tell that all the acceptance/deferrals/denials are starting to get me stressed out for RD. He has been accepted to two great state flagship schools, but we all want our children to be noticed by the top schools.
