Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Congrats jazzi on Hofstra!

This must be good news Monday for us…came home to a fat envelope from Loyola New Orleans, it’s a yes! Tulane and Loyola are the two private schools DS did fall in love with (albeit for slightly different reasons), so he was thrilled…and the musician in him LOVES NOLA!

DS said something like “wow, mom, including CityYear, that makes seven for seven!!” (Perhaps this is all happening so that when that OOS HMFR public says no, his confidence won’t be too rattled.) ;)

Very cool! Now he just has to decide which school to ask for a deferral from. The DC schools definitely need young men who are committed to making a positive change. And the education profession will be the winner if he decides teaching is for him after that experience. Congratulations!

kelijake - Don’t forget to buy him that apparel! ;)

Congrats to those with acceptances today and GL to those waiting on tomorrow.

APs - like others, S’13 has 7 periods for academic classes and they could all be APs if the student was qualified and wanted to. S’13 is taking 6, but micro/macro are each a half year course. So 7 AP tests in the spring.

Reader95

Here middle schools and high schools are on a block schedule. The kids have 4 classes per day that are 90 mins each. “A” days are blocks 1,3,5,7. “B” days are blocks 2,4,6,8. Most classes are single blocked except AP Euro which is usually double blocked.
In most of the middle schools math is double blocked but not in high school.
An academically advanced kid could easily fit 6-8 APs in junior and senior year here.

Yes Congrats Jazzii and Kelijake! Good luck to everyone still waiting! Thanks to everyone for the congrats.

Here the kids have seven periods, but they are block scheduled so they have three different ones on A days than they do on B days. There is one constant period, which has lunch in it. As a senior, D is taking 5 APs which is as many as I’ve heard anyone take. Econ is a two semester class- micro then macro- but the others are all a full year. She didn’t take Econ.
Need some advice here. S14, my junior child, had that seizure and got a concussion from the fall he took with it. The school is well aware of both. He was put back on anti- convulsants, and this one has, as a side effect, a terrible inability to concentrate. Of course so does the concussion. His headache abated over the weekend but came roaring back at school today. His grades in some classes are being affected and he has a ton of homework, of course, which he can’t concentrate on. Should I be going to the school tomorrow, and if so, asking for what? Extensions on the work? He needs to stay after to get help because he really can’t figure out what they ate saying, but then it just piles on… And at some point we may have to ‘explain’ this year on apps- but how? I assume it’s only going to be this month of work, but it will have the lingering impact on grades for the quarter and then the full year, you know? Ugh ugh ugh. I’m just at a loss as to how to help him. AP chem and calc are far, far over my head now. APUSH, I can work with. Any thoughts?

89wahoo - I would talk to the school as soon as reasonable, tomorrow if that works for you. If it were our school, I would start with S’s GC and ask that person to refer me to the best Dean to discuss the situation with. My experience is that it’s much harder to go back and get adjustments made after the fact. Also, the school probably has experience with students with concussions. They certainly will have experience with kids going on meds and with longer illnesses (like mono) that require special circumstances. So, they may be able to suggest a good way to deal with it. But you have to tell them it’s needed. The sooner the better.

Yes wahoo, what confetti said…but take things one things one step at a time. I am sure you will know more about how much you – or even if – you have to explain on the apps when the time comes…right now I would just focus on what you do know and what you can control regarding school.

Meanwhile, he (and you!) are in my thoughts!!

Hey 'rents!

I got into Emerson!!!

Thanks to all for keeping us sane!

Just wanted to pass along the comments from an experienced Mom (not me! it’s a friend of mine who has sent two boys off to college and is working on the third one). Oldest is at Georgetown, middle is at U of Chicago. She told me that the middle one had his heart set on Dartmouth, got rejected, and ended up at U of Chicago. “It has turned out to be the perfect intellectual community for him, and I can’t imagine what would have happened to him if he had gotten into what was then his first choice”.

I really do think it’s about fit. Even in the madness of thousands of applications.

D13 just got good news from her ED school, St. Olaf’s - via logging on to her page and seeing nothing except “please send $300 enrollment deposit”! It certainly looks like the fit is there, and I think that the chances are good that she finds her intellectual community. And I hope that everyone on this great thread finds the right combination of community and interests (and affordability!) for their next 4 years, if not this round, then in the next round. I know it’s out there for them - they’ve all worked really hard, and I know they will find something that sticks with them for the rest of their lives.

Yeah, Swizzle!!! That is fantastic news!!! A very big congrats!!! (figured I could hold down the ! key also! :)

wahoo - really tough situation. I would think the school would be willing to accomodate you as much as possible. I agree with going in as soon as possible. And I would not write off those 2 courses as of yet. His head will clear over time, he’ll adjust to the meds (I’m guessing there…) and perhaps the school would provide extra help, like tutoring? At the very least they should be extending whatever deadlines possible…

re the concussion and after-effects - by all means go talk to the school. I have experience both ways. In 10th grade (at day school) my daughter had a thryroid problem. I let one teacher know, but otherwise didn’t really get the information banged into them. By the time we had figured out how badly she was doing, it was late in the year, and the bureaurocrats didn’t want to do anything to help. Result - train wreck. The next year, at a new school (boarding), she had a concussion. They convened all the teachers, they had a special plan worked out so fast it made your head spin. Extra time, help on notes, follow-ups, frequent checking in with her counselor who was coordinating the plan. Result- the academics wavered, but never went into the ditch. I can’t say I did anything to make that plan happen - but I sure can see that the presence of a plan makes a huge difference.

Swizzle—yay!! Emerson MUST be full of smart admissions people!
SSACDfamily–congrats on St.Olafs!! And thanks for passing along the words of wisdom…

congrats swizzle and ssacdfamily! And for some reason I think I missed mommaof5!

Hey, all! Signing on from the Bermuda Triangle of the Internet, aka my parents’ house. Thank you, brother, for the wifi hotspot!

Congrats on all the good news. David, so excited for you! Reader, I can’t wait to hear more about my ds’s doppelganger. Jazzii, congrats to you as well. And keli and swizzle! Geez, so much great stuff on here.

I’m out of town and have heard no news from ds2. Wasn’t expecting any. Well, it would have been nice to hear that he finally pushed the buttons on those last four apps, but, really, like I was holding my breath?

Wahoo, good luck with that situation. I would hope the school will be supportive.
Thanks YDS! Congrats Swizzle and SSACDfamily!

Here’s to our Lucky 13 ners :)

David, KelliJake, Swizzle, and reader- so happy for you all! Good news all around!
I’ve been so busy I may have missed someone; if so, I’m sorry. Who is waiting for “big news” this week?
Thanks to all for the replies re: S14. I emailed the school. I’m assuming I will hear back from someone there… D has this horrid cough and a runny nose. I think the boys are getting that, too, so poor S14- the concussion, the new med and its side-effects and now that too. I need to explain to them, there is too much to do for anyone else to go and get sick!! :)
