confetti - oh no! Room mate worries!! Deep breath… don’t even think about it right now… Very interesting to have that be the most major issue! :)

erlanger - yes, all it takes is one remark. Ever seen the thread “the stupidest reasons our kids decide not to apply to a certain school”? They are quite trivial and hilarious! I think there is a general consensus about the size of the squirrels in Michegan! My own son is petrified of spiders. He actually didn’t want to look any further south or west than NC because of that. I don’t have the heart to tell him that NC has spiders also! (as does NJ, where we live, but they don’t seem as threatening as those southern spiders! Bless their hearts!)

And you made me literally LOL with the ‘fun goes to die’ comment about Uchi! :D

Also, it would be convenient to be in state. A lot of his classmates will be there. So, I understand the charm.

However, hopefully, in a couple of days, he can start thinking rationally and apply to atlest a couple of good privates too. I am not going to insist, but I may badger him a little bit about it. :)

I understand the just one comment thing. All summer and fall it was Emory, Emory, Emory. Then one day, out of the blue Emory was resigned to the heap pile. No idea why. S just says he changed his mind.

Is there a way to check the school report on the Common app? It says that my counselor submitted it but I just want to make sure there aren’t any errors.

So there are lots of nervous kids and moms out there! We need another basement! I’ve just been hanging out here on my own first floor with my wine, trying to force myself to do all the things I NEED to do and to stop worrying.

It’s officially Christmas break and my house is constantly full of kids. Not that I’m complaining, but it’s making me huddle back in my bedroom with my laptop. I try to stock the fridge and then stay out of the way. S2 and his friends are playing the piano, singing and playing video games at the same time. Showtunes punctuated by gunfire - interesting, but loud.

S2 passed another prescreen today - SMU. Not high on his list, but I made him apply because he gets an automatic merit award. He had already heard privately from one of the voice teachers there that she wants him in her studio, so the “official” email was not a surprise.

Hi everyone! I’m truly amazed at all the good news here! Congratulations to all with recent acceptances.

D finally received her letter today: accepted to her first choice, O berlin. She’s thrilled, and told me that I had to come on here and post it! LOL!

For everyone still waiting for acceptances to come in, sending lots of encouragement. With all the news here lately, it’s hard to remember that lots of kids are still working on applications and finalizing lists. Decisions wont be made until Spring, and there’s lots of time left on this cruise ship! Most of the students in my S’s high school class, including the one who is now at Harvard, didnt know where they were going until April, and they all ended up attending great schools.

I know this page is for parents but I read this page when I feel down about the lack of support from my parents and it makes me smile every time! I just wanted to tell you all that your amazing parents! This time of year all the kids at school are complaining about their parents breathing down their backs about college and I don’t really have that mine wouldn’t even read my essays.

Cali, I’m glad if we can provide you some support and encouragement. :)

Parents deal with all this differently, and I think many parents are more like yours, especially if they haven’t been through it before. Good luck with your applications!

CaliforniaRooted - I know where you are at. My parents kept telling me all the reasons I shouldn’t or couldn’t go to college. That I should just learn to type and get a job in a secretarial pool. I hate to tell you this attitude did not stop all the way through school until I graduated. I took my first career job 180 miles away (again lots of reasons why it was a bad idea) But it wasn’t long before they were bragging about their successful daughter and how well she turned out. Stick it out, it will make you a stronger person and it IS WORTH THE HASSLE.

added based on anniezz - I will agree with that, my parents didn’t go to college and didn’t appreciate it or know how to go about getting a degree. "They did just fine with an 11th grade education. (they got thier GED the year before I graduated)

Hi Parents! I haven’t posted on this thread before but I have monitored it for a couple of weeks. Congrats on all of your S’s and D’s acceptances! I hope those who haven’t heard from admissions offices yet receive fat envelopes in the future!

As for me, I got my acceptance from my first choice on Monday! Emerson College accepted me for Writing, Literature & Publishing! Still waiting on a few more schools but after that first acceptance my stress level has decreased by miles. I hope that you get to feel or see the weight lift off of your children’s shoulders as well. Good luck to all!

Welcome kids…nice to have more youth on the board…just stay away from the basement. ;)

Congrats lilkickster…sounds like you should meet swizzle!

Californiarooted…I’m so impressed by kids that are managing this process all by themselves. My son gets annoyed, but he also tells me how much he appreciates my help. Let us know if you need any help!

Anniezz- Congrats to you and your D on Oberlin! Great school! I also echo your encouragement for all still waiting.
Welcome and congrats also to CaliforniaRooted and Lilkickster! Sometimes I think I overdo it as a parent in the process- do you hear a helicopter? - but overall I’ve tried to give support that I didn’t really get when I went through the whole process either. My parents were just a bit too “laissez faire”- it’s hard to win as a parent, and most of us try our best to find the right balance - sometimes I fail, but some, well, maybe aren’t aware or able to change.

Welcome to the kids posting for the first time, and to new acceptances posted recently! We parents may be over the top in some ways, but we truly just want our kids to head in the right direction, and be happy. This is a GREAT group - very supportive no matter which of the kids’ schools are safeties, targets, HMFR and xHMFR! Everyone is open with sharing and helping however we can. Yes - I come here more often then FB!

I know this isn’t for our younger kids but wanted to mention our younger D, (D’17) tied for runner-up in the school spelling bee! Awesome day! :)

my3: I’ve got personal experience in each.
Cornell: Where to get great legs and cold feet (literally)
Duke: Great weather…for…black widows (just be careful where you put your warm feet), brown recluses (basements), and cute 1.5 inch garden spiders that do nothing but get trapped in your hair if you go bush wacking in the Duke gardens.
NJ: NJ spiders are pretty darn similar to NC spiders. They do eat mosquitoes, bless their hearts.
Duke Engineering is the best part of that University, IMHO. Congrats to him!

CaliforniaRooted: We’ve adopted a few virtual kids. Welcome! How are your apps coming? English teachers are also useful for reading essays if time still allows. Your parents are normal; we are the rare air traffic controllers.
Welcome and congrats to lilkickster too! Yep, swizzleroommatepotential.

The only help I got from my parents was my Dad suggested a back-up school (which I eventually attended, thank goodness). I had to do all the applications on my own; back then it was triplicate forms, typewriters, and white-out. Writing the essays was the easy part. Filling out an error free form the first time (had to order each one from colleges snail mail if you messed up) was the hard part.

our2: The alphabet starts with an a; college prep starts with a bee. Congrats!

Tip of the day: As Jan 1 approaches, go through every single application element of each application. Somethings might not have been sent even though the person said or thought it was. Confusion and false assumptions are easy to do with applications swirling around like a triple funnel cloud in Kansas.

Congrats on all the great news!!! My son received a nice email from one of the colleges he’s still waiting to hear from, Lake Forest. The subject was “Spoiler Alert”. They just wanted to let him know he’ll be getting his acceptance letter after the New Year. I thought that was pretty nice of them to not leave that question hanging over the holidays.

But if they can spend the money to send the spoiler alert, why not send the actual acceptance? Maybe they need time to put the big packets together! Congrats to your son! Is is wrong/stupid/unedumacated that I always get Lake Forest and Wake Forest confused? :)

Annie - A huge congrats to your daughter on her acceptance to the big O! oops… there are now children on here… SO great to get the “yes” from your number one!!

DDHM - PLEASE don’t tell my son that brown recluses actually live here in NJ!! He have to become like the children in “The Others”!!
And even your edits are funny!!!

Calirooted - I’m sorry your rents aren’t more involved… as was said above, we can be a bit over the top here, so don’t see this as the norm. But please stop by any time for support, advice, recommendations, a virgin Pina Colada, etc…

lilkickster - Do you play soccer? also, do you know Swizzle13? Cuz you should!!! Congrats on Emerson!!
