My s won’t be 18 for a few months…the fafsa had to be done anyway, so it was easy as checking a box…no idea what is involved the regular way, but I can’t imagine it being any easier!

moonpie - sounds like a wonderful tradition. Apparently your house and my house attended the same New Year’s Eve party last night! Who knew they were serving shots to dorm rooms?

Am almost done with FAFSA. But have no idea if I estimated right. I used turbotax without an account to get estimated numbers (along with last pay stub), and it said I credits in a negative amount (the number was the result of adding my tax paid plus child tax credit) and tax owed in a positive amount. The credits were larger than the owed. So turbotax says I owe taxes based on the difference.

So it looks like this (numbers changed immensely to protect the guilty):

Tax owed: 2179
Tax credits: - 2568
Fed tax owed: 411

Am I stupid? Does anyone with turbotax or tax experience have ideas?

The other thing holding me up on the FAFSA – I don’t know S13’s PIN. Or don’t remember if I know it. And he’s still sleeping. This really isn’t important enough to wake him up for, is it??

And - I just checked the supplement for the final remaining app and there’s no essay :D. How could we have not known this? I’m sure S13 will be happy to apply now. Except I’m not SURE sure, and he’s sleeping <sigh>.</sigh>

I’m gonna go take a nap

and I won’t have to worry about it all, it’ll be done and completely taken care of? Sounds great!. Thanks for the help.

But shouldn’t credits in excess of amount due result in a refund?

I am such a proctrastinator!! I know I said I was getting the CSS profile and FAFSA done this “vacation” week…did it happen??? Nah! And I get upset with DD who left all her essays, outlines, homework for this one day…all due between tomorrow and Friday…
anyone give me a little nudge…if I have all the papers/tax infor…how long does it reallly take to fill the stuff out??? Help, I need a push…
thanks, in advance!

For the FAFSA - do I need separate PIN’s and/or applications for two students? Or, can I just have one account and fill everything out once, and submit it to all the schools for both kids? Is the PIN for the parent or the student?

Our2girls: I gave you some green and I think I noticed you moved to 2 squares! Congrats!

Fafsa - cannot even begin to think about it… Our $ situation is so topsy turvy I wouldn’t know where to begin. Just waiting for tomorrow to get back in touch with college financial adviser.

When I clicked on this thread today, it brought me to page one!!! RobD’s DD was about to attend high school freshman orientation!!! Wish I knew you all back then!

I have posted once I think to the “parents of 2014” thread… I feel like they are all strangers… except Wahoo! Anyone else here with a 14er who can make me feel at home? And then the DS16!! How can I be involved in 3 threads like this… I’m barely getting anything done as it is with keeping up with THIS one!!

drmom - from one procrastinator to another, here is your swift kick in the butt!! :D

Happy 2013 y’all! A quiet night was had here. I looked at D2 after midnight & told her she’d never forget 2013. Just like hearing 1982 now makes me think of my senior year. D2 is thankful for the new year in hopes that schools will stop emailing her with the message “we’ve pushed the deadline back just for you!”

Steve: hope your D is feeling well & that her surgery can happen as planned.

Lauren: so glad you said that about Les Mis. We saw it last year at TPAC. I wanted to throw myself off the balcony I was personally so Les Miserable
But my musical taste runs to Spamalot.

D2 needs to apply for her FAFSA pin today. And if I get my act together, I will do a mock file of my 2012 taxes so I can get the numbers I need. Question for the group: since 2012 will look different for us than 2013 will (DH’s job loss & severance pay in 2012 vs. 2 stable incomes (hopefully!) in 2013) is there a place to explain that on the FAFSA or PROFILE? Or do I need to send notes to all the FA offices of D2’s schools?

drmom - at this point, it took me less than two hours, with the time on turbotax spent trying to estimate the W2 info. I’ve done the CSS Profile already and about a gazillion NPCs, so that helped. Some of the calculators were more involved than the FAFSA. If you have last year’s taxes it really isn’t bad.

Whichever one you do first, keep it open - many of the questions are the same and you can check the other app instead of re-adding.

I poofed around a little bit this morning ;).

my3gr8 - I feel the same way about the '15 thread. I’m subscribed to it. But … well, maybe spring break.

mother22 - you need a PIN for each student and one for at least one parent. None of the PINs can match. It’s considered a signature. You only fill it out once I think, at the end it should ask if you have more students you want to use the information for. Search this thread for FAFSA - I’m pretty sure I learned that here, but can’t remember who said it.

reeinaz - that’s why I was confused. I think perhaps I messed something up going through quickly. I only needed the tax number anyway, so it’s fine.

RobD - both the FAFSA and the Profile have “additional information” boxes where you can put the explanation, but I also contact admissions, just to be sure they read that box. Not accusing of anything, I just don’t know how much is automated.

I didn’t see any such box on the fafsa this morning, but there is one on the last page of the profile tat i used to explain changes that will take place In 2013. I don’t think it will impact federal aid anyway, but will definitely impact profile schools.

Mother22…both student and parent need pins…if you ever filed fafsa for yourself, you already have a in assigned to your ssn, otherwise, you can create one at that point in the app. You would use your pin to sign each child’s fafsa…they each need their own.

If I remember correctly, someone else said you will be prompted to complete an app for another child at the end of the first app.

confetti247 - thank you!

Right now, the css asks for “estimated” 2012 numbers…will that change?

my3gr8boyz – Yessss! I have TWO green boxes!! Appears one needs to have about 130 taps of love to get there…last night I had 19, this morning 44… You all are the best!!

RobD – class of 1982 here as well, lol!

89wahoo – are we thinking about starting the “Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College Class of 2021” (yikes!!) too soon? I’m game if you are, but will probably hang here most of the time until our 2013 kids are launched.
Our DD’17 will hear about acceptance into her HS on 2/8/13…all the HSs sent out acceptance letters on the first Friday of February. It’s always a crazy day, especially now with kids texting when they get the mail. Our parish has a tradition that when the kids get their letters the parents run out and get helium balloons in their HS school colors…unless they get them the night before and hope all will be good! We love driving around the neighborhood before 5:00 mass looking at the balloons on the porches to see where the kids will be going to HS. Fun times!!

So FAFSA asks for my mom’s last name as on her SS card. I’m guessing that’s going to be her maiden name… which she hasn’t used in like 30 years. Doest that matter? None of her forms or whatever will have that.

CSIHSIS: The important question is what name does the Social Security administration have for your mother. Are you looking at a current SS card? Do you know that she never changed her name with SS? When I decided to take my husband’s name, I changed it with SS as well as everywhere else and then received a new card.

Yea I just asked my dad and he said when you get married you get a new card so I guess that means her name now.

I filled out the FAFSA for S13 today based on 2011 numbers, and I know once 2012’s taxes are filed I can update it with current numbers. The FAFSA can be sent to colleges and then later updated with the new numbers.

But can you do that with the CSS Profile? I filled that in completely also using 2011 tax returns, but it seems to say that if you submit it to a college you then can’t change/update it?

Only one college he applied to and has been accepted to requires the CSS Profile and the priority deadline for financial aid is Feb. 15.
