Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Awww… c’mon! 5 pages of posts in 24 hours? With reading these, and giving greenies, and trying to get involved in the '14er thread, and keeping up with facebook and email, how am I supposed to actually live life? :D

Steve - so glad your daughter is recovering quickly… and Gene Wilder gives me the creeps!

Confetti - loved the story and it didn’t seem like a mistake!

STEM - I hope your visit to mom goes well…

I LOVE cake, and especially high quality frosting! Me and mom bought a little square lemon cake at ShopRite and it was so delicious!! Yeah for store-bought! I always bake cakes for the kidz b-days, but they are from boxes. And for icing, I use one jar of cheapo Betty Crocker, mixed with one stick of butter! Everyone loves it and acts like did something special! Since we always have sleepovers, there is breakfast involved and I like to make pancakes. One year a kid said, “These pancakes are delicious! They taste just like McDonald’s!” Oh my! :D

I like the idea of mom does apps with 13er, and dad is responsible for aid paperwork!

Walker - Good luck with that next step! Advocating for G&T can be so draining! But I think everyone around should duck, because something is gonna hit the fan!

Haven’t seen Cheer Moms, but I’ve seen Dance Moms, and Toddlers with Tiaras and those women are just nuts!!

Searching old threads - it will make you crazy. That’s what people tell me about things I do that “you can’t do because it will make you crazy.” Well, then call me crazy!

Kidz went back to school today, only out of the 3 of them, we got in <1 day of school… DS14 attended like a good boy, DS16 was sick with fever, and DS13 decided he needed lots and lots of sleep (pulled his very first “all nighter” over New Year’s!) and went to school AFTER school - had to lead the Mock Trial meeting! Tomorrow is their first real competition!

Here is the recipe:
It makes either a 9x13" cake, 2 layer cake (about 30-35 min baking time) or 24 cupcakes(about 20 min). Frost with either the chocolate frosting recipe I posted above or the vanilla version and it is great! I usually use Hershey’s Natural baking cocoa but occasionally I will use Dutch cocoa. Enjoy!!

Mrs. Orr’s Chocolate Cake

3/4 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups boiling water
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Place butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add boiling water. Stir until the butter and sugar are dissolved.

Sift the dry ingredients into the butter, sugar, and water mixture. Mix well. Add eggs and vanilla extract. Mix.

Pour into a greased and floured 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake about 35 to 40 minutes, or until cake tests done. Cool on a rack before frosting.

STeveMA: glad to hear surgery went well yesterday. Hope she’s feeling even better today!
ANiezz: hope that surgery plan goes well too.
everyone back to school?? my kids are NOT liking it!

I find myself like the rest of you - worried about cari’s postal woes, Steve’s DD, and STEM’s Mom and happy that dt’s are back to school today.

Belated Welcome (back), pkd (fellow parent of twins), sahp, vera, and daisy! All other readers and lurkers are welcome to come to light. We want to hear your comments, vents, and questions and will tap your puffs if you’ll announce yourself. :)

Ree: My DD13 got a plastic M L P for Christmas. She now has the complete set of six main characters. I have to admit, I don’t mind browsing the baby aisles still. :o At least T w i l i g h t Sparkle is a good influence. I have no doubt that my dS got an 800 in the SAT Writing section primarily because I banned R u g r a t s in 2000 'cause of the show’s horrible grammar.

Walker: I have had the same issue here with a few teachers. You have my deepest respect for continuing the good fight. Unlike you, I got tired of going GRRRR!! and gave up my fight; my dT’s are now self teaching, using mentors, and using parents to teach them some subjects instead. Our property tax increased by 50% two years ago (ouch!), and we still can’t rely on the public schools to ensure good teaching in all subjects.

Confetti: I loved the story. Gotta go take care of some giant balls after I post this… now stop it ladies, I meant golf balls, of course.

Cari, did your DD apply to O.C. in MA? My DS has applied too. BTW, you’ve only got one green square, so I’ll give your puff a tap, along with my daily WalkerPuffTap and giving greenlove to other single and double square ipeeps.

Selective Service: DS13 registered online. Takes about 3 minutes if they have a social security number. You can do it in the 9 months prior to the 18th bday, and SS retains the application and activates it on their birthdays. Note that boys have only up to 30 days past their 18th to be in compliance with the law. If they don’t, it appears they may have troubles getting a govt funded job in college, along with scholarship stuff.

DDHM, thanks for the reminder about the Selective Service registration–that one would have escaped me altogether with all the blessings of my subconscious. Gulp.

I mostly lurk on this thread, but wanted to add my good wishes to SteveMA’s D, and to thank confetti for that uplifting story.

You are welcome. You got a reptap from me as a reward for unlurking again. :D

SteveMA: glad surgery went well. Speedy recovery…

STEM: hope your visit goes well.

Mommy: I want to stand next to you when the cake is served. I love frosting.

Confused: recipe looks good; maybe this weekend.

Selective Service: if you check “no” on FAFSA you don’t need to fill out the form since you MUST be registered to qualify. DDHM, thanks for the tip- I was wondering what to do about S13 who doesn’t turn 18 until the summer. Our GC told everyone with boys to check the “yes” box.

MegPMom- thanks for the information re: the Methodist loans. I didn’t know about that! We will definitely need to look in to that. :-)

TooTired- Yes, I wouldn’t bring the 13 year old for sure. My 17 and 14 year olds would not take it well but a more free-wheeling 17 year old might be fine. My kids love the soundtrack but I do edit out a few songs. :-)

Selective Service

Our GC advised those males who turn 18 later in year to go ahead and check the box right on FAFSA form to “register me.” That way, automatically, they will be in compliance of both SS registration laws and FAFSA eligibility requirements.

Cake talk - ruining New Year’s goals already!

I will definitely be going to see Admissions AND This is 40. In fact, I have a Groupon for Dh and I for this weekend! :-)

Kids back to second day at school. Love them but it is SO NICE to have my house back to some semblance of order. That being said, who is volunteering every day this week to sell Homecoming tickets at lunch? Yup, this girl! Between that and having a slew of girls at our house to get gussied up for Homecoming on Saturday night, I am pretty much still in Kid heaven!

Then Sunday is the RAVENS PLAYOFF game WHOOT!!

My LB- Agreed- my D has acceptances at places she would like to go so now the rest is fun and gravy- I keep telling myself this!

OK- I’ve given out all the rep I can for 24 hours, all to this group. I’d love some puffies in return!

STEMFAMILY- big hugs re: your mom being in the hospital. I know that is so difficult and emotional. Thinking of you.

Ree- Happy belated birthday to your S!

Question-

Does anyone have any contacts or anything in the book publishing industry?

My 14 year old son wrote a story for a class and I absolutely love it. It would make a really good young children’s book. My Dh thought so too and he is a harsh critic. I’d like to have it looked over.

I’m not sure what steps he/I would need to take.
If you have any insight, please let me know or PM me.

Thanks!

Just popping in to say:
(1) Confused–your recipe looks fun and easy but I CANNOT have one more bit of sugar-laden stuff in my house right now. I am knee-deep in candy and cookies (some presents but way too much bought by me). Please re-post when I’ve lost five pounds.
(2) Re: Selective Service–I wonder if sometimes this is done in school? I have three males over 18 and all are registered but I have no idea how/when it happened.
(3) Re: frosting, the discussion made me think of something my FIL told me years ago. You know that great old bakery frosting? Apparently it was made with two ingredients: confectioners sugar and lard.
(4) vandygrad–I really am just calmer since that realization so am looking forward to enjoying the rest of the ride.
(5) My 2013 started out with a pleasant surprise. I was officially back at work yesterday but took a closer look at my use-or-lose and I now have to be off the rest of this week and all of next. Hooray for long-serving employees!!
(6) WAAHHHH!!! I WANT MORE LITTLE GREEN BOXES!!!

Mommaof5- Helicoptering paid off for sure! So glad you called and your son got such great news!!

MomofBoston- I am making Dh do all the financial aid stuff as well. I’ve done more than enough and would hate for him to feel left out!

Lots of talk of surgeries here. SteveMA- glad your D is recovering nicely from her surgery. Annie- Sorry to hear DD is going to need surgery.

Okay- I just restarted my low carb diet and you guys are freaking killing me with all this talk about cakes and icings. Really?? LOL

Anouilh- congrats on d’s admission to college!

Confused- thanks for the recipe! Is there some way to bookmark a particular post or something? I’d like to go back to that at some point.

Okay, I think I am actually caught up. You guys are killing me! Maybe I could give up some sleep and my daily shower, so I can keep up…

STEM – thinking about your mom and your family.

89wahoo – old threads?? Yep, that’s me! Always looking for more information wherever I can!

Green boxes – I keep tapping everyone with one square to help you get more…but I’ve exhausted my taps already today, and have to wait 24 hours before I can tap more! Really??

Mommaof5 – AWESOME helicoptering for your S! Congrats to him – that’s really great
SteveMA – happy your D is doing well!

We are still in “wait” mode. Waiting for an anticipated scholarship offer from the one school DD hasn’t received a scholarship from – we expect to hear February - and awaiting results from numerous outside scholarships our DD has applied to  DD is SO excited I’ve found a bunch more for her to apply to, with upcoming deadlines. Many, many thanks to confetti247 for suggesting “cappex dot com” as a site to check for outside scholarships!!

It will be nice when we have all the information we need to make a decision, which will probably happen in April. Ugh!! Hoping and praying that the #1 school our daughter wants to attend is do-able. I’m very hopeful it will work out.

Confettii – St. Nick always brings an ornament for my kids too! :)

SteveMa- glad your daughter is doing well!

Walker – I’m scared… that teacher has no idea what she is in for!!

My sister messaged me that THE hotel in town is booked the weekend I was planning DS’s open house. We have been debating between the Friday and Saturday of Memorial weekend after his Thursday evening graduation. The hotel is actually not booked on Friday, so after reserving a bunch of rooms for Friday, we have decided the party will be Friday evening. Funny, how life makes these decisions for me. And I was going to be sooo on the ball. I just left a message for the tent guy, I sure hope he’s not booked that evening!

MyLB: Puffed you.
Vandy: CC won’t let me puff you again until I spread love elsewhere.
At least I gave you a mental puff?

Confused- I’m going to get in trouble with everyone else but I am going to make that cake for S17’s birthday, so one question and we can all pretend its no longer on our minds. What temp for the oven?
Walker. Waiting to hear about this appointment today…

Aw shucks–thanks so much to all who tapped/puffed/sprinkled fairy dust/enhanced my reputation. So excited to get a second green box that it’s a bit embarrassing!
