Parents of the HS Class of 2013

anniezz–missing school for DD is NOT helping the senior slide issues at home. Can you schedule her surgery close to the end of the school year? :D.

Big meeting with vice principal tomorrow regarding a teacher (new this year) who isn’t teaching and my DD13b who isn’t learning anything. It should be very, very interesting. Spent the evening reading state core content and and gifted and talented policy. Wish me luck… Next stop is superintendent of G/T. Teachers really shouldn’t p I s s me off if they aren’t doing their job. I’m not stupid.

Anouilh, my great accomplishment is surviving round 1 of apps. Check the 2017 thread in a few years to see if it lasts…
Steve, thrilled to hear it. Annie, good grief, that’s not good.
Moonpie we are all going to be old ladies on that 2017 thread. We will be like YDS with about 3000 posts each! All brilliant of course.
Thanks for the CSS info. I’m clueless about this. In case you hadn’t noticed, that is.
S14 has massive headache after day 1 back to school. Of course he and his people were jumping on a bed on New Year’s and his giant self hit his head-and apparently left a dent- on the ceiling. He told me he is going to start naming his concussions. That child may not be ready for college.
Meanwhile D has decided to become an evil nerd. Her nerd status, she says, has increased this year (5 APs will do that) and she is being inundated by people needing help-AKA answers. The last one was for bio. The girl honestly said, " I have the data but I don’t know what to graph.". Umm, the data? Her BF gives one word answers so they leave him alone. Meanwhile in study hall- called advanced seminar, thank you very much- there was a table of four girls who would come, one at a time, to ask her about bio, then return and put their heads together and send another to ask their next question. She said she couldn’t get anything done today since she got interrupted so much. I don’t think the evil nerd will work but I’m amused all the same.
Ree- how’s the cake?

I missed a whole page. Confused mom, my birthday is in November. I will take any sort of frosting you should choose to make. Never thought about using the food processor. Also have not ever used that paddle. Hmmm… Wondered what it’s purpose could be.
Walker. I pity the school tomorrow! Go get 'em!

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous “yes.”

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things–your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions–and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else–the small stuff. “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

“Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first–the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I’m glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

I wish you all a fantastic 2013 and a safe and Happy New Years Eve!!!

Walker - I know exactly what you mean. The kids call it going GRRRRRR. As in, “That lady at the phone store better look out; Mom’s going GRRRRRR.”

wahoo - I’m liking the evil nerd concept. Does that involve anything goth-like?

Did someone call me old?!!?

89wahoo - tomorrow I will send you my recipe for the chocolate cake we use for all birthdays (makes great cupcakes too). My mother got this recipe from the newspaper many years ago. Very easy and so moist! Keeps well because it is so moist but then again it doesn’t last long enough to get dried out. Am very well known amongst my kids’ friends for this cake, if I do say so myself.

OMG I’m sorry! I pasted my notes into the wrong notepad and included that story totally by mistake. <sigh> There are days I shouldn’t be allowed by a computer!</sigh>

Here’s what was supposed to be the first half:

SteveMA - so glad everything went well!

moonpie - what a great tradition! We have a similar one - St. Nicholas fills the stockings on Dec. 6th and always brings an ornament for each.

anniezz - good luck with the planning, my hat’s off to all you guys for scheduling medical stuff this year with everything else. Not that it’s a choice, but still.

anouilh, I don’t know that she’s ticked about his acceptances, but it is an interesting dynamic with him being the successful one for a change. I’m still double and triple thinking her list of schools, and I’ve spoken to both her school GC and private counselor. I’m just worried that there aren’t any true academic safeties ($ not an issue, although merit helps spread it out to grad school).

SteveMA, great to hear about your D’s surgery going well. I hear you on the frosting. My mother was from Vienna, Austria, and I grew up with buttercream, bavarian cream and whipped cream frostings. So for my birthday I always requested a grocery store shortening frosting cake.

YDS – wise, she meant wise!

89-- survival is all we can ask for. I’m going to suggest evil nerd-dom to my D2. Though probably no one has time to ask her anything, b/c the school doesn’t have the sense to require study hall. She has 7 APs – no lunch, no study hall, no break at all. Just comes home and studies till she goes to bed.

Walker – I’m quaking for that teacher all the way from here!

ConfusedMom – feel free to post that recipe right here for all to see ;).

AAAAAND – I was a very confused mom today. First it seemed that we had received no mail. Our postman must be on vacation because I finally found our mail neatly stacked under a rock in the corner of the porch, where it was invisible if you had the front door open because you were looking for the mail. There was a BIG ENVELOPE from D2s Canadian school, which had given us no timeline at all for responses. She got home late tonight, but she has opened it, and she is IN! She still has to apply for their scholarships, which aren’t awarded until April, but we probably could manage even without, if necessary. Looks like she’s going to college!

Long-time lurker on this thread with a D13, wanted to finally post just to tell Wahoo how much I love post #17595! I thought I was the only one obsessive enough to look up old threads on CC to see if D’s EA schools ever notify early.

YDS- no, no, no! I meant we would have been around a long time, as far as join date. Not as far as birth date… Sorry!
Confused, the recipe will be put to use. Quickly. Small child, aka S17, is turning 14 on the 13th.
Confetti, I’ve seen that before but it’s great. Pretty timely here, too. You may need to post it a few more times (on purpose! Haha) as the decisions keep rolling in…
Anouilh, how cool and how alarming at once. That’s all you need- precious, long-awaited mail under a rock! Good grief. One does wonder at times. Does that mailman look for his mail at home under a rock?
Daisy, welcome out in the open! I’m so much happier to hear that I’m not the only one obsessively reading old threads. Once i scope out the ones for D’s achools, I start reading them for schools that may be reaches for S14, looking for the one person with lower than ‘normal’ stats which are in line with his. Once found, I will then commit that post to memory so I can convince myself he will surely get in. Then, off to stalk more of D’s schools because, you know, in those thirty minutes since i last checked, so much is likely to have changed. Just, shoot me.

SteveMA - So glad to hear your DD’s procedure went well! I too love the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka! Yay!

Wahoo - Love the comment about S14 not being ready for college b/c he’s ‘naming his concussions’ LOL Hope he feels better soon. Love everything you’ve been writing lately (in your stalking mode.) Hope the mailman or e-mailman brings your D good news soon!!

Walker - I am with everyone else. Scared for anyone who is NOT doing right by DD13b!! Go get 'em Tiger!

Anouilh - Under a rock? So glad you found it! and YAY for your D!

Tonight H and I had the pleasure of attending a reception in Washington. Sometimes it’s so frustrating to live here and sometimes I just LOVE THIS TOWN  Had a beautiful view of the capitol, all lit up, from where we were. Just breathless…

LDog–sounds lovely. DC is the only BIG city I would consider moving to. I’m seriously considering it for our “golden years”. Our oldest and I have tentative plans to visit again next fall.

Have to say–“watching” Cheer Perfection on TLC with DD–I really, REALLY want to slap those moms…thanks, I feel better now :D.

Wahoo, you are me! Beyond the old threads on cc, I’ve also found myself hunting for historical school data on twitter and tumblr feeds. You’ve inspired me to start in early for D15.

Ha! Steve - Slap away! Some of those moms are unbelievable. Yes, I remember you saying that this area is one where you wouldn’t mind retiring. The traffic is a living nightmare, but everything else is pretty great. Maybe we can just trade homes in a few years? Would make everything so nice and easy. ;)

Hi daisy! Welcome to our group!

Works for me LDog :D

Am I the only one that doesn’t like frosting? I scrape it off! I really don’t like cake either…unless it’s cheesecake. :D

Confetti…I loved the story…it was tap-worthy!

Steve…glad D is doing well!

Wahoo…how’s your son adjusting to that med? I wish my son was an evil nerd too…he helps the entire class with physics and calc, then doesn’t have times to do his own work!

Anouilh…congrats to your D!

Welcome to the group, Daisychain! Don’t we all search old threads??? I know I do!

STEMfamily - thinking of you and your family as you visit your mom. Praying for her!
