We registered last month, but won’t know until August what she got into. She registered for Art, again, and is hopeful that this year it’ll work out for her. Otherwise, the usual stuff you’d expect to see from a kid whose parent posts on CC.

Summer? Softball and Driver’s ed will eat up a lot of time. She hopes to detassle and earn some cash. It’s a tough, dirty, crack-of-dawn job, but pays well for a short stint.

Momreads-
Drivers Ed isn’t in our school anymore. You have to take classes from a driver education school on your own time. DS is a Leap Day baby so he is turning 15 this week. He won’t even have his permit/temps for another 6 months.

Our school district has nothing to do with Drivers Ed. D took it last summer (at 14), got her permit on her 15th birthday, is getting her “drive time” in now. I assume she’ll be like her big sister and get her license on her 16th birthday. She’s not a bad driver at all but it still terrifies me to ride with her!

D registered last month. Sophomore year was easy…don’t know how she will fit everything in during junior and senior year, unless they offer one of her classes during “zero hour”. Her school is on trimesters - 5 classes per tri, but fine arts and AP classes go all year long. Hard to fit all the subjects into five periods when you have orchestra and all AP classes. She only has one AP in sophomore year, so her classes still fit for now.

Of course, all that assumes that nothing changes with the huge budget cuts proposed for public education in Michigan. Not sure what the schools are going to do if the budget cuts pass…

Yes, our school has also proposed a morning “zero hour.” I don’t know yet whether it will just be for some of the band and choral ensembles, drill team, etc. or whether they will offer other courses as well. It’s so hard to know what to do with everything in such a state of flux, but it’s not the fault of anyone at the school.

I have been following CC for a while now for D who is a senior, but have just nerved myself up to join and post. Going throughout the process has taught me how valuable it is to have support from others, so I look forward to getting to know you all as I move on to S’14.

If your son is definitely going to take AP Bio, then wait on the SAT II. If he is not sure, it is usully best to take the SAT II as soon as possible after the class ends, in other words this spring. He can always take it again later if that makes sense for y’all.

After coming up for air from D1’s college search, I can now focus on D2 who is a HS freshman. What summer programs are your freshmen (women) participating in?

Softball (high school, not club; we have a summer season), cheer practice, driver’s ed, a week of teaching bible school, and hopefully some detasslin’ so she can make some money.

2014 son is waiting to hear if he’ll get to study Arabic overseas this summer. He applied to NSLI-Y before things started heating up in N. Africa and the middle East. He’ll be disappointed but I am doubting that there will be study abroad in Egypt this summer. He’s supposed to hear back before the end of April. He did apply for an Arabic language program at a southern university (can’t remember which one) and even for Chinese at our state flagship. Anything to get away from his three younger siblings…

I wish I could get my S to care about anything for the summer! Probably a week of wrestling camp and a couple of weeks of rowing camp, but nothing that will really stretch him unless he undergoes a miraculous personality change soon.

Re the summer programs, S is ASKING for a summer math - he isn’t happy with his current teacher and is concerned he is missing out. He also turns 16 this summer, and drivers permit is high on the list.

Our HS opted out of the drivers ed years ago.

S’s idea of a summer job is umping little league games. casual part time, but he needs to put up with the dad/coaches. tradeoff?

My sophomore S2 and many of his classmates took the PSAT last October. I learned this strategy of taking the PSAT for practice before junior year here on CC!

Sophomore’s take it in our district. Our S1 did pretty well, had his math teacher review the results and recommend areas of study. He brought his score up more than 20 points when he was a junior. I think it’s a great idea to take it twice.

Obviously, sophomores are not eligible for NMS competition.

Re Summer jobs: Just got DS’s application to be a volunteer at the hospital in. He needed three recommendations plus an essay. He didn’t want to go to summer school this year and there are not too many paying jobs for 14-year-olds. This will be good for him. I hope he gets it.
