On one of our campus visits, someone said it was primarily international students who smoked. I don’t know how true that is. The only school we really noticed a lot of people smoking was RIT. People standing close to building entrances having a smoke. yuck!

I’ve seen many young college women on the campus where I work take up smoking to control appetite and stop weight gain.

barnardmom - i hope you’re released and feeling better!

It’s always so interesting how many different school there are out there. Mention NYC and you’ll hear a range of never going anywhere else to it’s the last place on earth I’d go - lol.

Classof2015 - bummer about the foot, glad she could be seen so quickly.

Taking my older S to the dr this morning. He had a trip to the ER in the middle of the night the other night with “upper quadrant” pain that left him breathless. He got an ultrasound of the gallbladder, and the side of his rib was really sore. He’s feeling better now, but I want to know what that was to stop it from happening again.

We took d and her boyfriend out on the boat to watch the fireworks last night. Best view in the house. Perfect weather, water was calm enough and we made it back in the dark no problem. Helps to know the rivers like the back of your hand. Always makes me wonder - how on earth did these explorers just take off in a boat with no idea what they’d find, how deep the water would be, etc.

Hope everyone had a nice fourth!!
DD and her friends hung out before and then went to watch the fireworks at the beach
Today we got our ap scores and DD got a 4 on APUSH, we are extremely pleased!!

Yes, I remembered when I woke up this morning that the APs were viewable for 24hrs today. Our hs does not have a great pass rate in part because students are required to take the test if they take the course (the county pays). You get kids trying hard as well as those sleeping through the test…grades aren’t impacted. S3 scored where we expected and are happy for him. He’s now an AP Scholar with Distinction. Nice to put on college apps, but really only because of the lack of achievement at his school. It’s odd, great school, competitive GPAs, honors, etc, just not great at the AP tests.

We’re still struggling to get access to DS’s AP scores. The site is giving us “unexpected errors” – I assume overloaded servers. Will try a different browser just in case.

Good luck with that mathmomvt. I woke up dreaming that we got the AP scores and I was texting them to my daughter! LOL – our scores won’t be visible until Sunday. I think I need to get a life if I’m wasting valuable dream time on the Collegeboard!

No waiting for AP scores here. In previous years my homeschooled guy took some that he self-studied for, but my '14 public schooled guy doesn’t care to do self-studying. He’s content with just DE. No APs at the school means no waiting on scores. It does feel weird having everyone else looking for scores and not needing to this year…

You can try to get them thru proxy - my friend got them for me that way. Of course, the servers need to be clear.

Got 'em! Two as expected, and one higher. The boy will be pleased (he is out of the country and without cell or internet access so he doesn’t know yet).

I’m annoyed that we’re waiting for AP scores from two years ago. My '11 daughter needs them sent to her transfer school to finalize her schedule, and college board shut down ALL score access for weeks to roll out the new site. They had the nerve to tell me we could get them “early” on Sunday. She’s known the scores for two years!

ugh, seattle_mom – can she get them sent by phone?

AP scores are in here and they are as expected. Kind of anticlimactic actually.

The more exciting news is that one college app is done! School has to send the transcript but our end is finished so that’s one down.

Wow novamom! I’ll be happy if we have a draft of the common app essay before school starts in September!

ecouter, how do you do it by “proxy?” Even though I was able to use the ACT “glitch,” not sure how my hacking abilities will be with the “proxy”!

No, no, it’s not that impressive! It was to Alabama which does not have an essay requirement at all. So basically he just had to fill out basic biographical info, send ACT scores, and pay. We have requested a transcript.

He has to wait a bit until he gets his ID number and then he can fill out the honors app (which is also very simple) and request to be considered for scholarships.

DS’s stats qualify him for free tuition and an additional $2500 from the engineering school so he decided to apply just so he could have an early acceptance and have a bit of psychological cushion in this process. He is assuming that he will get in.

Alabama is becoming more popular at his school with their generous merit money. Class of 2012 had 9 kids enroll and 2013 had 6. And Alabama really made him feel wanted at a couple of college fairs we attended. And out of all the info sessions we have attended they were the only school with food and free shirts!

Still impressive. :)

Fog fog…one other distinction regarding core requirements for engineering at Columbia…exempt from foreign language requirement I believe.

novamom - nice going with 1 app done! DS can’t do any without common app and higher ACT scores would be helpful!

DS14 just announced his AP scores to me- we live in Cali- guess he found a work around. He was disappointed with a 3 in Lang Comp, ok with a 3 in Chem and happy with a 4 in APUSH. I think AP Tests are overrated. The class matters more. His APUSH teacher said that he will raise grades for 4 & 5 scores, so the B+ will become an A possibly. Good for the GPA at least.
