lindz - thaks for the additional ED info. I will track down the other thread. This is a school where we will have to play the numbers to our advantage and what we should have done for S-11 had we known better back then.

The 22% seems about right if you add the 600 he quoted to us and add an allowance for early admit athletes. Without the athletes, its more in the 17% or so range.

Dropped off Son '14 at cross country camp. Have not heard from him, so I’m assuming he’s running, training, learning lots and making new friends. Want to add that Shippensburg University ¶ has lovely new dorms where my son is staying. Air-conditioned. Four-person suites with a nice common area. In-suite bath. Elevator. Very welcoming for students who may be looking for a smaller school.

While he’s gone, I’ll be doing some summer cleaning.

Just looked at my calendar. Two weeks until I return to school. Summer’s just too short.

Popping in to say hello and later in the day or two I will scroll back to catch up.
Haven’t been here since July 5 when I drove to my parents to be with my mom in her last days. We had thought we were losing her before and she courageously fought for a long time. She passed on the 16th. I did a eulogy on Saturday.

On a happier note, my older K1 is home this summer (now about healed from a sports related injury) Celebrating birthday 20 today.

K2 is home from being away with EC related events. Had been taking a private tutor/math class and the school schedule is finally in order. Finally. Now I can have K2 shop for the school books.

Also a pre-read from one of the schools on the list was positive. K2 was very excited about that.
There are several priority apps that will be done this week.

One school on the list is going to be too much of a reach and so I am thankful the pre pre-read has lets us know the chances are slim. Too many other options to fret over that. K2 is a legacy there and if K2 really wants to go for it–we will do that…

Another pre-read is in the works and is K2s present #1…and so time will tell.

Lastly we are still waiting for K1s financial package for this yr. DH is concerned that despite aid the last 2 yrs that K1 might not get aid this yr beyond work-study (if that) I am hoping K1 gets at least work study ad it is related to major/career and important.

Feeling out of sorts having been gone for weeks. Not sleeping much and I suspect just when I start to get my head around being here–I will be back to dad’s to empty mom’s drawers and closets. One of mom’s BFF gave me a sterling bracelet from Pandora with a single breast cancer bead. I didn’t have any pandora and this is a perfect thing–mom’s BFFs all have one–we feel join in a type of sisterhood. kwim?

so sorry for the loss of your Mom fogfog, how sweet of your mom’s bff to give you that gift and the gift of sisterhood. be gentle with yourself…hugs to you

I am sorry for your loss as well FogFog. The bracelet will bring you comfort- how kind of your mother’s BFF.

I am interviewing for a new work position tomorrow. It is my first job interview in 15 years. I am not really nervous but I really want to move into this new position. I will tell you all more if it works out. Wish me good luck!

fogfog - so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is a horrible experience and that was very sweet of your mom’s friend. I don’t think you can prepare yourself enough. I will assure you that you will stop crying eventually, things will settle down, but you’ll think of her always and there will come a time when you can remember with love and laughter and not just sadness.

minnymom - good luck tomorrow! I’m the interviewer at my company and if I can offer one helpful hint - please ask questions! It always makes me think people don’t care about the job if they can’t come up with one question. Anything from - tell me about a typical day here, or who is your ideal candidate, what’s the biggest challenge in this position, etc.

fogfog- May you find comfort in this time of sorrow. I agree with eyemamom- you can’t prepare yourself enough and it will be less raw eventually.

Fogfog: So sorry for your loss - hugs and prayers for you. Going back to go through the drawers will be difficult, but there will be moments to smile. I went through this a short while ago. By siblings and I found all kinds of interesting things from our childhood and from our mom - old photos, post cards and letters, etc. Peace.

I’m so sorry for your loss, fogfog. I hope you are able to take comfort with your kids at home. All good thoughts for some peace to your days and sleep for your nights.

Sorry to read about your loss, fogfog. Even when we completely accept that it is inevitable, it can still hurt like the dickens when it happens.

Going through a deceased parent’s papers can be an adventure. After my mother passed a few years ago, my siblings and I, when going through her papers, discovered that our parents had always lied to us about their wedding date and that they HAD to get married when they did.

fogfog… so sorry to hear about your loss. I know all too well about losing a parent … all of my kid’s grandparents have all passed on. Hugs for you.

…

We’re back from Nashville!

PreVU was wonderful! Except it was POURING rain the majority of the time.

Let me see … what can I add that hasn’t been said?

Vandy really rolled out the red carpet … the kids all got tshirts, there were pasties and drinks for everyone, water bottles before the tour … everyone was VERY welcoming. We received free lunch vouches and HOLY COW - salmon, veggie lasagna, salads, grill items, LOTS of desserts. (Like a HUGE 3 layer chocolate cake, ginormous cookies, chocolate mousse … )

I don’t think we learned anything new from our tour last fall, but it did cement DD14s decision to go ED. I’m hoping and crossing everything possible that it works out for her. And if not … well … she has her safety and then will throw all the apps out there to see if anything sticks.

Oh! We stayed at the Holiday Inn on West End. We’re platinum members so they upgraded us to their executive floor. Nice! Balcony that faced the stadium, lounge w/ water, pop, coffee/tea, hot chocolate … pastries, muffins & cookies for breakfast. I’m sure the Marriott is nicer BUT parking & interent is free at HI - I hate getting nickled and dimed sometimes. :)

fogfog - I am sorry to hear of your loss. I went through this 30 years ago this fall and things do get better with time. I am hoping the sorting and cleaning will bring back some wonderful memories for you and any siblings. Enjoy and accept the support of your kids during this period of you life.

minnymom - good luck with the interview. I agree, I can’t stand candidates that I interview that do not ask questions. It’s as though they aren’t interested.

KaMaMom - glad to hear PreVU went well. Sorry to hear about the rain, however. We didn’t have rain, just 90% humidity and hot, hot, hot. Vandy is almost a lottery school but the ED is the way to go if you are comfortable with the FA. We were not that wise back in 2010 and S-11 applied RD and was waitlisted. I think he might have made it ED. It’s Ok as he is very happy where he landed. We stayed at the Hampton Vanderbilt which was just on the next block from the Terrace Garage. I prefer the Embassy Suites on Broadway but I could’t get as good of rate this time. Still had free parking, wi-fi and breakfast, though.

Let’s hope the D’s both get in ED and we could have a CC reunion meet and greet in Nashville next fall. :D

avonhsdad … it felt like a jungle w/ it raining, hot and humid. Ick!

I forgot to mention that we never made it back for the student panel after lunch. Ooops. We followed a tour guide out of the dining hall at the last second, kept our eye on the parents in front of us - and didn’t notice that the parents somehow lost the tour guide! We ended up by the law school! How that happened - I have no idea! We ended up just walking right into B&N for trinkets. lol!

The parent’s questions kill me sometimes … there was one parent (after the kids left us) who asked a question and somehow made the fact that her kid scored a 35 on the ACT the biggest part of her “question”. Lady, I hate to break this to you - but this is not the room that is going to be impressed by that score. ;)

And yes! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your DD too!! I actually adore the school - it was my pick initially … but whatever happens, happens for a reason.

At the risk of being a thread hog, I did want to add one more thing that I learned from PreVU.

As you guys know, a lot of the admissions presentations are the same from school to school - some are done w/more flair and personality, but schools in similar categories have the same requirements and the same spiel.

BUT … as a mom who is a crazy planner by nature and who has control issues (go figure!) this really made me stop and think:

The director of admissions said the best time for our kids to do those pesky essays, is right before they apply. He said that (obvs) who they are really need to come through - and our kids will change so much in the first months of senior year. That’s not to say that they shouldn’t be thinking about how they’ll write the essay, just that it shouldn’t be completed just yet.

We will be busy this week with some apps–I think. Have suggested to K2 that we get a jump on some of this now. One disadvantage to these priority apps is that I believe they are school apps and not CA. IDK as I haven’t had this on my radar for weeks.
If the CA is live - that would be better.

K2 sent info stats to coaches that have been part of the conversation for the last 9 months to a year.
One positive preread done (yay!!)
and another in the works- which we hope will come through positive and soon.

A few others we fully expect to be green lights yet wait for the admissions news.

One coach was honest that K2s academic stats are a stretch and had been honest the team isn’t a good match for K2. Back in March on the second visit to campus (k2 had really liked the school and is a legacy) the coach had been more encouraging. So in the end I am glad he has been frank with K2 on the plans for the team. I think K2 could have enjoyed the school yet without a team fit there are other schools K2 likes as well and team fit could be better.

Hope to have the “list” firmed up soon and K2 will do some OVs.
The OVs are valuable as we saw with K1. SO no shortcuts–OVs on the horizon.
With OVs we will get the fin pre reads done.

I may get a dry erase marker and put a chart on sliding glass door in K2s room so K2 can get a picture oc whats got to get done and can “choose”

I do think there is a lot of wisdom there… but applications open up next Thursday! School doesn’t even start until August 26th… So while it would be nice to have a couple months of senior year under their belts first, the colleges aren’t cooperating there. :-p

My son has 3 essays due with his app next week, and he’s at the “tweaking” stage right now. He works a lot of hours between now and then and we’ll be gone this weekend, so hopefully he’ll have the essays the way he wants them by Thursday!
