Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Hi- is this forum for parents of HS Seniors that are graduating in 2014? It seems while I was perusing at some of the threads that this forum might be for kids entering HS.
Please advise, thnx.

Spritle–Kudos to your accomplished son! I just want to put in a plug for schools in proximity to DC, where your son would have a gazillion options for awesome internships! I did a paid internship for 3 summers at the State Department during college, what an experience! But the list of possibilities is endless-French Embassy on Reservoir Road, La Maison Francaise, part of the French-American Cultural Foundation, Alliance Francaise, a nonprofit focused on sharing French language and culture…and so on. Also, I agree with other posters, you’re SO fortunate to have access to the many top-notch Virginia public colleges! Good luck!

Calgon-This thread is specifically for parents of munchkins who are about to begin their Senior year in high school. (For me–Cheergirl starts Senior year August 26-YIKES!) But all are welcome to stalk or even chime in…

Calgon,

This thread was started back when our kids were just entering high school, so if you started reading from the beginning that’s why it would have seemed like a post for people with kids entering high school.

But it is for those graduating in 2014, so current seniors.

Ecouter, I couldn’t agree more! What is the deal with no writing supplements posted? I know both Notre Dame and Emory released there’s in the past week on their websites.

Welcome to our new parents!! Just in time for all the fun, fun, fun!

It’s 5 o’clock so I’ve opened the bar here in our hospitality suite. Tonights special is a Meyer Lemon Martini, or be creative and make your favorite cocktail. Spritzers and fresh juice for those who just want something refreshing. Cheers!

Trying to catch up on the last few days. We are trying to take advantage of S3s work schedule to sneak in a few school visits on his days off. Tuesday we saw an instate private I had high hopes for. I loved it (completely irrelevant) while S3 was a bit underwhelmed. I didn’t even ask him his thoughts as he’s always so pensive and needs to absorb and reflect. This one I could tell wasn’t hitting the right note. I think he may still apply, see if any merit comes his way, and reevaluate when students are there. They are strong in his intended major. He has three days off in a row next week which never happens so I gave him the choice of north or south. He’s been south twice so he chose north. We are going to hit two very different schools, maybe three. None can be done on the same day, all 4-4.5 hrs apart. It will be interesting to see how he likes these.

He actually has a first draft of his common app essay done. As a rule I don’t deal with essays. DH & I don’t even see them until the applications are all sent. He made an account for the CA today (no prompting) and started filling it out. I’m not sure how far he got before he left for work this afternoon. His academic resume has everything laid out so it’s a matter of plugging in what he feels is most important. He is generally responsible but I thought would take some more prompting so I hope this is not a fluke.

@go2mom, Classof2015

I think someone on the CA subforum here said that they may not be out until the 18th :frowning: . Good to know about Emory - most of the other schools on my list have not posted anything. It’s so silly - why force us to pack everything in on top of senior year classes. :-/

Can I have your opinion on listing honours? We have to pick 5 for the immediate list, and I have stuff that’s immediately relevant to my major studies:

One of 18 selected to represent country in an international competition (2013)

Best in Category for Sigma Xi Online Research Showcase - judged by members of the Scientific Research Society, and I got made a Sigma Xi member as an HS student

2nd in Regional Fair (biggest in country),

top 20 (silver medal) for research (2012), various smaller awards for science fair

Participant in a provincially competitive program for research - gave me 6 weeks of funding.

I also used to live in NY and won state awards for writing (Honourable mention for best news story) and business (FBLA - 2nd place, 4th place in New York). Awards for Model UN/Debate/Speech.

I also got selected to advise my Minister of Education for a year, again provincially/state competitive.

Should I just pick my top awards regardless of field, or the ones that mean the most to me or?? Because I don’t just do science (though I love it!).

I can’t believe I’m really, finally applying to college! I am going to go an east-coast tour of unis. I have so much work to do though. It’s insane.

I can’t believe the Common Ap is finally out and the whole application process is now starting!

I spent the morning being DD14’s Sherpa while she was having her senior pictures taken (carrying the changes of clothing around the state park we were in). I told her that I was just going to be in the background and let her and the photographer do their thing. But it was kind of nice to see a bit of what was going on. She’s friendly with the photographer and had also done some preview promotional shots this spring so she was somewhat familiar with the process. I’m sure the pictures will come out great but if not, I absolutely love one of the ones from the previews so I’d be happy with that! But I still can’t believe my baby is having her senior pictures taken!

As far as the applications go, we’re heading on vacation tomorrow to a house on a lake with no wifi. So DD14 will not be doing any of the Common Ap for a while. She does have a ton of AP work and reading to do and is bringing most of it with her. Unfortunately, the friend she was hoping to bring with her cannot come due to the scheduling of her new job. So DH and I will have her to ourselves after DS11 and his friend head home after the weekend. DD plans to do a lot of kayaking and summer AP reading on the dock. Sounds like a plan to me. Her hope is that if she gets enough done on vacation then she’ll have the time to hang out with friends once we get home. I’m just hoping some ACT test prep will get done too. And I’m thrilled to actually have some extended time with her - probably the last for a while. And who knows about vacation time next summer before she heads off to college somewhere!

And just for the record on a totally different topic, I am so NOT used to DS’11 being home for dinner and his new, healthy eating “got any vegetables?” DD is the one who usually eats the fruits and veges and he eats the starches. Maybe he really is growing up!

RE common app

of K2s schools we know they take both the CA and their own…K2 registered today nad said that one of the schools didn’t appear in the CA list yet.

I do know from last yr that some supplements don’t show up for weeks–even into late Sept…because as a parent of a HYP student, parent’s of applicants were lamenting the supplement being missing until very late…

Let the games begin!
Of K2s schools, K2 has 4 positive pre-reads and one red/negative. One other is expected postive and one we aren’t sure about.
Awaiting supplements/priority apps etc so that when K2 does the CA the CA picks up the fee waiver etc.

K2 wants to do something very social related next week and I have been holding the CA essay prep and summer reading as the incentive. 2 weeks til school starts and we havent’ started school shopping (clothes etc ) either…and I told K2 there is no clothes shopping without CA essay prep and summer reading on track.

@akmom124 “I spent the morning being DD14’s Sherpa while she was having her senior pictures taken (carrying the changes of clothing around the state park we were in). I told her that I was just going to be in the background and let her and the photographer do their thing.”

I will be doing the very same thing tomorrow. Went through the test trial of the outfits//accessories this evening for senior photo shoot in the a.m. School begins in two weeks- hard to believe the summer is coming to a close in our neck of the woods!

Visited College of Wooster today with DD and she loved it! She said it is one of her top two now. She had a fairly bad attitude going into the visit, so I was pleasantly surprised by the turnaround. I think some of the reason for the attitude was because she was not happy about interviewing (her first one), and apparently, it was not as awful as she had believed it would be. I was not overly impressed with the facilities (although their newish rec center was quite nice!), but was super impressed with the students and staff there, and the opportunities that seem to be offered. The campus is pretty and we enjoyed walking around the downtown area afterward…some fun shops and restaurants there.

Meanwhile, back home, DS shocked me and began working on the Common App today! His CA essay is finished, and he has starts to a few supplement essays, which is great. He did explain that he wants to have the CA done before school starts in 3 weeks because he knows he has a heavy course load, plus he runs cross country. I have never seen this kind of motivation and I’m completely amazed!

Can’t believe it’s really time to start the process in earnest. I think many cocktails will be necessary!

Collegefortwins - will you send some of that motivation in this direction??? :)

Wow - way to go DS of Collegefortwins!

Good morning! Told Son '14 that the Common App was up. He probably will get around to working on it in a week or so – between cross country practices. Meanwhile, he sent in his second app last night to one of his top choices. It’s rolling admissions, so he should hear something in a month or so. He also continues to juggle which schools will receive applications – which could drive me a little nuts.

Did his interview at CNU and then met with the track coach. Really likes the school, too.

And he also has had to juggle his schedule. Decided not to take a personal finance class, because the gentleman who was slated to teach it is no longer at his school. Instead, he wants to work as a guidance assistant, specifically with our college counselor. That is a good move. The counselor knows him well, and he will keep on top of what he needs to turn in, because he will see the reminders. Besides, he also can use the block to study for other classes.

Momreads - Are you toying with my emotions? Do you really think he has a chance for W&M? He is crazy about it and will apply EA, maybe that will help? I can’t tell that CNU has an International Relations major.

AvonHSDad - Georgetown would be phenomenal. Unfortunately, their requirements and DS’s stats are too far apart.

Cheermom - DC would be a wonderful area for college…so much to see and do. DS is very slightly involved with our local Alliance Francaise, and sent an email earlier this week requesting information on how to become a formal volunteer. I think he is going to try to start a French conversation group in our city (which doesn’t have one).

DS has glanced at the common ap. That is all. He may or may not start on it this week. He has told me that he is thinking about his essay topic…it’s a start, right?

If it’s any help spritle, my D (who had lower stats than your son) was WL at Wm & Mary, and she was OOS, and a girl (that’s why we call her D), so I figured you’re in-state, he’s a boy, his stats are higher – he’d have a good shot at Wm & Mary.

She was outright rejected at Georgetown so maybe I was wrong in mentioning Georgetown, but American and GW (as others have posted) would be great schools too for him.

I’m planning on kidnapping S and tying him down at an undisclosed location until he does a draft of his essay. No FB, no cell phone – just me, him, and the Common App.

Actually, after looking over the CA with S yesterday, it is largely a waste of time starting it before September. Much of what it requests we won’t know until then. He needs to know his class rank (not yet available), about his potential internship (not yet available), officer elections in his ECs (held in September). Additionally, none of the colleges to which he is applying have them posted. He does have a draft of the general essay done, but those prompts were available for months.

Go Tribe. As an alumnus, he sounds like a fit for W&M. But, as I’ve posted elsewhere, the college has changed a lot in 25 years.

Please send the motivation our way too—would love k2 to get these essays going!!

My DS is so happy – after many glitches on the end of ApplyTexas yesterday, he got the A&M app and all 3 essays submitted last night and is done. He’ll have one more essay to write for a big school-offered scholarship, but that isn’t due until February or March. He’s looking forward to just enjoying his Senior year and final year of marching band. I’m just hoping he can stay focused and not develop a case of Senioritis!
