Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Way to go kldat1!

Our DS is plugging a way. He only works on his apps on weekends, but he is making progress. (There are several schools on his list which don’t yet have their supplements out.)

He is ahead of where I thought he would be. We have only one goal - don’t ruin Christmas break. ;)

One thing I appreciate now is the thought that went behind the list when panic wasn’t part of the picture.

Trust me, we’re a super human group - you will be hearing PLENTY of stories of New Years Eve apps going out. I don’t think much of my d’s GC, but the very wise thing he said - that deadline is the LAST day it’s due, not the due date.

How do you know how you find out if the acceptance comes snail mail or if you check online?

Most are “check on-line” these days.

Check the webpage of the individual college to be sure.

One non-Common App application submitted…finally!

Is anyone else stuck in limbo waiting for their GC’s to link their naviance accounts so that we can “invite recommenders” and finally submit the common app? (What’s the point of filling it out Aug 1st if we cant send it till Sept 30??)

Does anyone else have “live” apps questions but no attached live writing supplement?

:)

Good morning! Day 1 of Son '14’s senior year. His older brother asked last night if I would be taking a final school days photo. The answer is: As long as it’s not pouring outside. Son '14 knocked out two more apps last night – both rolling admissions. One, Ole Miss, at the suggestion of his older brother, who loved the campus when he visited for a football game. Dad has offered to take Son '14 on a visit of Ole Miss and the U. of Kentucky (still needs to do that app) sometime around the end of the first semester.

eyemamom: I find myself assisting my son with little things like setting up the passwords for his apps, filling in info on parents, getting him registered for the SAT. With my oldest son, I managed the mail he got, which filled boxes. He was National Merit and applied to 11 schools. The younger son tosses out a lot of the mail, as it does not interest him. But, the kids do need a bit of assistance, especially if they are so busy with school, ECs, a job, etc.

First day of senior year here, too. :frowning: And progress on college app type things last night. All he needed was a deadline! Part of his homework assignment for AP English was to create a resume and an essay. So since school started today, he had waited to do it until last night! She gave them prompts for the essay (I believe they are the same prompts for our in-state U’s Honors College app), but also said they could use a prompt from the Common App if they preferred. He chose the one about the place he is most content, like I guessed he would. I read it … I thought it was very good, almost fiction like in all the descriptive words. And more of this is where I want to be as opposed to this is where I’ve been. I don’t know if that’s what the ad coms are looking for, but I liked it! We’ll see what the English teacher has to say about it.

DS is filling out all the info on the computer for the actual apps, although I’m sitting over his shoulder at most times for the fill-in the blank type questions. I have started a (another!) spreadsheet for colleges applied to and deadlines. I decided I better have an idea so I can harp on him when it’s getting close! haha With the deposit (enrollment and housing) due dates, scholarship due dates and honors college due dates it’s going to get crazy! Then there will be the special weekends that will need to be scheduled (assuming he gets accepted!). Yeah, I’ll be his secretary for keeping his calendar. :)

beady - that’s the common app question my d answered as well. Her AP English teacher had them work on it in class last year.

Opinion - given the question was the place you are most content - do you think it could also be used as a personal statement for an application that isn’t common app? The personal statement prompt was along the lines of tell us something we wouldn’t learn about you from your application.

It’s one of the best essays I’ve seen her write and it has nothing to do with any of her ec’s.

eyemamom - Of course it can be used for a non-CA school . . . as long as it fits their prompt.

Some interesting data in the Chronicle of Higher Ed today (Profile of the freshmen entering college in 2012). 76.7% accepted at their first choice college. 59.3% enrolled at their first choice college. That may be considered hopeful news for many.

What made me chuckle a little was this: 69% of students evaluate themselves as at least “above average.” Hmmm. . . .

Morning All.

Busy here today. DH, K1 and I signed new wills, power of atty etc…since K1 is almost 21 and K2 is almost 18. Serious important paperwork. Some we should have done when K1 turned 18 (before leaving for college)
We will be doing K2s in a more timely manner.
Had something happened while K1 was out of state, health or otherwise, we didn’t have the docs to protect K1s interests.

ymmv

K2 was up today and out for a mtg re an EC. Then later today will swing by the hs to clean locker and put in books etc so all is ready.
K2 has to put some touches on the CA essay and send it to the GC and english teacher for comments. Also needs to get with teachers re recs etc. Lots to do. The kids have to hit the ground running (summer reading tests).

Not having to worry about it alongside homework, sports and other ECs. :)

IMO there’s not that much benefit to submitting super-early, except for the sense of achievement of having it “done”. But for non-rolling-admissions schools especially, it rarely matters when you hit the “send” button, I don’t think.

Eyemamom: Sure she can use the CA essay as a personal statement for a non-CA app. I would think many of the “Place Where I Feel Content” essays would fit well as a personal statement.

We have a lot of seniors who started today - very cool!

I don’t think there is any benefit to hitting “submit” early (unless the school is rolling admissions), but it sure feels good.

^ I agree. But for some schools it does matter. I know for Texas and Texas A&M getting the application in early is a big benefit for competitive majors like engineering. Wait and you probably won’t get in. I assume some other schools are similar.

A few schools have housing issues. At Au burn for instance your housing is based on when you get your deposit in. As soon as you’re accepted you need to send in your deposit, whether you’re going or not. Sounds like a racket, but it’s easier to get a refund then have no place or no decent place to live.

I’m just a get it done kind of person. Given how busy my d’s schedule is in the fall, it just takes a load off to get as much done as possible.

We’ve also not toured every school she applied. So should we hear earlier she can have more time to see it.

For rolling admission schools it can matter to get apps in early as many also give out their merit aid as the apps come in. Pittsburgh comes to mind as a biggie with this, but others do it too. Early can still be Sept/Oct though. It doesn’t have to be August. Due to rolling admissions I’m seriously thinking of having youngest apply to some schools he feels he’s definitely interested in even though we won’t be visiting until Oct. We’ll see.

For those with deadlines, it really doesn’t matter. Middle son turned his app in within a day (maybe two) of the deadline for the school he’s at now (the merit aid deadline, not the final deadline). He kept wavering about whether to apply there or let winter deter him. He’s really glad he decided to apply.

School starts Wednesday here. I’m glad youngest can drive as we’ll be moving middle into his dorm room that day and arriving home that evening. I’ve always been my guy’s alarm clock while they were home… youngest bought his own yesterday and will be trying it out tomorrow morning to be sure he’ll wake up to it so he’s not late for his first day. First day jitters/excitement might help too.

We watch the TNT show, Falling Skies and just finished last season (taped them to watch with middle son while he was home). As they were talking about next season it occurred to me that middle will have finished his sophomore year and youngest will have graduated before it starts again. It was a really weird feeling.

Son and I worked out his timeline…finish AP work by Sunday (shouldnt be too hard, he has a long road trip this weekend), one last rework on CA essay and his ED supplement Mon-Wed, tour URichmond Thursday, spend time with visiting grandparents over the weekend…then back to school on Tuesday.

On another note, his senior pic proofs came today. I sobbed like a baby.

Thanks for the suggestions/comments re: a side trip to Niagara Falls. We’ll probably just play it by ear and see how the day is progressing. Looks like it’s a short 21 miles from I-90 in Buffalo to Niagara Falls, however that could be deceiving with traffic, etc.

So no one is having Common App stagnation? (see my last night post). I talked to GC today and they dont even know how to link the CA with their student’s accounts so that recommenders can be added.

What is the point of getting it all done before school starts if we cannot submit? We do have one school that reads them as they are received, so we just keep going down their list.

Does anyone else have “live” apps questions but no attached live writing supplement?

“On another note, his senior pic proofs came today. I sobbed like a baby.”

I feel ya!

Is there really a difference between August 1 and mid-September? For admissions or scholarships anywhere? I can appreciate that September is better than November for many things, but I’d be surprised (but I’ve been surprised before) if not being able to submit in early August is really a big problem.
