college4many, your daughter is already taking 4 AP classes so her schedule is plenty rigorous. It’s great that she has an interest in another foreign language and a chance to pursue it.

Who knows, that may open other doors for her later. I took Russian and German with my extra elective credits while working on my CSE degree and I ended up on a research project in natural language translation my senior year.

Avondad: Thanks for the detailed information on getting to/from Niagara Falls via I-90. Sounds like we’d need at least 2 - 3 hours for a quick view and I’m not sure we’ll be up for that. Well, more like me not willing to add that much driving time to an already long driving day! But, life is an adventure, and sometimes you just need to call an audible and go for it!
Stay tuned for updates on our long road trip odyssey. I don’t know who’s more excited–me to explore towns and parts of the country I’ve never been to (especially looking forward to checking out upstate NY), or D who is all about collecting sweatshirts from cool schools…sigh…

Busy morning here! DS11 just left with the first load back to school. My minivan is filled to the brink! He’s moving into a house next to campus with three other guys. They’re so clueless as to what they’ll need! He took his bureau so that filled most of the car but he did manage to fit some clothes and our kitchen table along with 4 chairs in. I told him they could have it and I’m thrilled to finally be replacing our $89 Building 19 table that is over 15 years old! Plus I found 2 mostly matching chairs at a yard sale I walked by last weekend that we got for $10 so they’ll have 2 extras for friends. We won’t get our new table and chairs for a few weeks yet so we’ll make do with the banquet tables we use for parties. He keeps eying things asking if he can have them. Luckily I think he’ll be limited by what else will fit in my car for the next trip and his desk is pretty big. He’s hoping for an extra outdoor table and a couple of chairs we have. We’ll see…

Best news though - DD14 finally found her missing phone! She lost it yesterday sometime between when she woke up at 8:00 and left for school at 9:30 to have her senior pictures taken. I’d looked many places - under just about everything I could think of. She found it on TOP of her mirror! Just glad it’s been located :)

This is the main reason DS applied the day apps opened up. Housing apps are first-deposit-first-assigned, and he really really wants in one of the new dorms they opened last Fall. I don’t blame him – they are so bright and airy, I want to move in too! Lol.

The other main reason he applied so early was for merit aid, which is also often first-come-first-served at schools that have rolling admissions, which TAMUG does. So, now we’re just waiting for them to start processing applications for 2014, which we were told should be shortly after classes begin on Monday and everything is “closed out” for Fall 2013.
I’m really enjoying reading about all y’alls school visits… I feel like I’m getting to tour the country vicariously! Love it! :-)

Quote:
“As for applying in August versus September, the only time that is an issue is if schools base your housing on your app date.”
“Not true. Some schools do admissions to majors based upon application date.”

I agree … When we toured Texas A&M engineering dept., we heard several times APPLY EARLY. Now, is early August 1st or October 1st? I’d think August/early-September would be ok. October would probably be too late to get into popular majors … at that school. So it all depends on what school you’re applying to.

Perhaps I should have added to my statement about applying to schools in August and September, but I was not thinking too clearly in the early morning hours. My bad.

Many times, the OOS schools will encourage students to apply early. If they do not, they may not be offered admission because they have a quota of sorts to satisfy. We got told that at one Southern school. (Son '14 has since removed that school from his list.)

But, in two cases, Son '14 has been told to apply early or his housing choices could be limited.

D has now submitted 6 of her 9 apps. She’s been able to rework one essay a bunch of different times.

One is a common app school that hasn’t released its supplement, one is a school that doesn’t open up until September 1 and the other one we’re having trouble logging in. The good news is my daughter doesn’t realize this is extremely early - lol Her boyfriend is attempting military academies and is up to his neck with interviews and recommendations so she thinks she has it easy. She now just thinks her friends are slackers.

Thank you, fogfog, although we should have known better to assume Plan A would actually happen once the counselor logged into the scheduling system. Once a student gets to where their schedule is AP heavy and they are in some sort of music, there is very little flexibility in scheduling. Many courses are only offered at one, two max, hours of the day. DC couldn’t get into any foreign language so physics it is. This is OK too. It never hurts to learn something you know nothing about. :)

Happy driving, AvonHSDad! Our family did one of those trips this summer. It was a good time.

I am impressed with the kids who have so many applications in already! But I am also glad that some have posted here that not a word is written as far as essays go. Everyone is different and marches to different drummers! We are in the “nothing written” camp here. I have already begun to stress out and I have days I talk myself down and nights I can’t get to sleep thinking about what S2 has on his plate. He has a SAT prep course that has started - meets every weekend from here to the Oct date with homework that he has not done yet! He has 3 AP courses with summer work only one is done at this point - school starts in a week and a half. He needs a full college list that we can help him narrow down. He needs to write some essays and work on the CA. I cannot push this one. S1 would listen and say “Ok mom I will get on it” S2 says “This is my life and my work - I will handle it.” I am trying to adjust! I am sure all will be fine but I do have to keep reminding myself that pushing too hard is not a good idea! I keep saying as encouraging things as I can muster! Like “you want to get the best SAT score you can” and “your grades your first part of senior year count for a lot if they continue to show an up swing” and so on. It will all be OK! (repeat and repeat again tomorrow!)

It was a fair bit of driving. First day from northern Ohio to Williamsburg; next day to Winston-Salem and High Point and Elon; next day to Atlanta; next day to the GA/FL line with a drive on the next day (Saturday) to Orlando to pick up DS-11 and then end up in Cocoa Beach/Port Canaveral. As you can probably surmise, we would drive to a school and stay overnight with our tour scheduled for the next morning. The only double visit was Wake Forest and High Point on the same day as Wake was just a follow-up interview. We were at High Point before lunch as the schools are about 30 - 40 minutes apart, did our tour there, and then drove another 45 minutes and stayed in Burlington (Elon). After 7 days of fun in the sun we had a two day drive home.

I am glad to have it behind us and it was worthwhile for the school visits. The good news is that I don’t have to pack up DS-11 and haul him and a car load of stuff to DC this fall since he is going to study abroad. All I have to do is take him 20 minutes to the airport. That I can handle! What I am waiting to see is how he gets a semester of clothes and “stuff” in 2 suitcases and a very large backback. :)

Out of the blue, DS comes up with 2 more colleges for his list (from emails waiving app fees.) Before I even know what’s what, one of the applications is completed, essay written and submitted. This is a school that is similar to two others on his list, but wow - that was fast.

He now has 3 apps submitted. (the teacher recs and official transcript will go whenever the H.S. does its thing.)

He will sit for 2 Subject Matter test in October and will wait for those before he completes another handful.

Hello! I’m new to this group. I hope I’m doing this correctly! I have a daughter who is a rising senior. She’s made her list, drafting her essay.

Oh and practicing for her ACT and SAT tests. She’s late to take her tests, I know but she was too busy junior year to practice and take the tests. Junior year was so stressful with too much social drama and too heavy of an AP load.

glido – is your kiddo free to do a Vulcan mind-meld with recalcitrant S? Just tell him to put his head against the screen of his laptop tonight around 11 pm and I’ll tell S to do the same. Then maybe tomorrow he’ll surprise me and submit 3 apps :)

Stressedmum – welcome to you and your daughter! People here are great giving feedback on the whole college search process so if you need any help with her list, don’t be shy.

Welcome, stressedmum! Even though you feel like you may be behind by reading CC, you are probably ahead of the majority of parents/students in the real world! What is your DD interested in? Have you toured any colleges yet or have any in mind?

So excited … DS schedule a workday this Saturday for his Eagle project!! He may yet finish it before he turns 18!!!

College fair at DS’ school is in less than a month. I see that the school he has been accepted to will be there. I’ve been telling some of his high-stat friends about the wonderful scholarships that school has. He’s kind of shy, so maybe if the boys go up to the admissions rep as a group, DS will talk to him!

D14 finally has a senior year schedule. All but 2 of the classes she initially selected have only one section, and one of those 2 was PE. There were lots of conflicts and hard choices.

Normally this would have been her responsibility, but she is away until Tuesday. School starts Wednesday. Mom as middle-man, once again.
