You and I really do have a lot in common, BarnardMom… I keep saying the same thing to myself – “This time next year, I am going to be completely alone.” But I can’t seem to find anyone I don’t want to stab in the throat after a few months! Guys are irritating.

So I’ve filled the void with being Super Band Mom, and all the competitions and games and concerts do take up most of whatever free time I have, but that’s all going to come to an end and I’m going to have nothing and no one.

I think it’s time to get out more… I’m in a couple of local Meetup groups, but have never managed to gather the courage up to go to any gatherings. I think I need to find a way to do that.

I’m really sorry about your relationship ending… I know all too well that even if it’s what’s right for us, it doesn’t make that alone feeling any better. hugs

My DS has friends at two schools he is considering - right now he prefers the one with the girl he has a crush on, but I am just holding my tongue and trusting “the process.” He got a priority app (no fee, no essay, notification in 2 weeks) from a local LAC so I’m encouraging him to use that one for practice and hope to knock them all out by the end of October.

We are like most of you-kid is dragging his feet with the application process. Part of it may be the- scared to leave home and make such a huge decision for the rest of my life- so I am trying to be kind to him.

I really like the all the e-mails with the priority application offers. BUT WHY, can’t we get them for the schools he will apply to? The in state flagship and the other in state safety?
I think they are 60-75 bucks each.

My favorite is when another adult asks the what school are you thinking about and what do you want to study? The answer is so informational. In this case it was the Shoe sales guy and S surprised me with the answer, architecture, economics or engineering. Did not expect the economics answer.

I feel like I want college more than my d does. She really doesn’t do anything without a push. Maybe the fact that she hasn’t started Senior year is keeping her feet in the sand. She will start back officially on the 9th, she does have an orientation half day tomorrow to get her schedule, id picture and such. I believe she just finished her English summer work today!!

Her Senior portraits did come available today online - that is exciting!

Also, here’s a question. If you received information from a school, that up to this point held no interest, but they are waiving the application fee - would you apply? I mean not cost attached and they claim that most everyone gets some kind of merit scholarship. I just feel like no cost, no harm, right???

Just got a text from DS. he was called into the Principal’s Office and told he is a NMSF! Woot Woot! Very happy for him. We just went to an informational event by the sate flagship Honors College last night. NMSF qualifies him for some very generous scholarship money. He saw several friends there and told me he would be very happy there. (Love thy safety ).

DD received three “just apply, no fee” apps and two are from schools that she was considering anyway so “YAY”! Although the third one (Fordham) has an absolutely wonderful theatre department, it was never on her list and after watching one of her old friends finish up her first year there, also a theatre major, it still won’t be on there.

I did not post here the entire summer. DS was gone for 10 week for a medical research opportunity (w/ a stipend). He came home for one night and went onto a 2 week foreign exchange trip. He went to school three days late to start his senior year. As a result, he just recently started writing his essay. He also still need to trim down his long college list. This senior year is off to a fast and hopefully not so rocky start.

Sydsim, just curious as to your comment about Fordham. My DS is considering applying there. We received the no fee app., it gives NM money, and is a Jesuit school know for being very generous with kids who graduate from Jesuit High Schools. We don’t love the location but it seemed like a good safety school. What negative info have you heard about it?

Congratulations, Glido! DS will not make NMSF with a reported cutoff of at least 222 here in Virginia. That is a significant jump from last year, so I am curious to see how many kids get it at his school, which had 145 of them last year.

Unless it’s a school your kid would want to attend if accepted, why waste the time? Treat it like any other junk mail you receive. An offer of “buy one, get one free” is only worth something if you actually want the first one, and have some use for the second. Most offers I get in the mail aren’t worth the cost of gas to go and get whatever’s being offered.

Our kids are seniors, they’re already inundated with stuff that needs to be done . . . why put anything else on their plates?

Congrats to the NMSFs! I know my son won’t get that… the PSAT was the first national standardized test he took and he really didn’t do anything to prep for it. He did well, but not good enough to even be near the cutoff.

Today was a little rough but when I caught myself thinking those negative thoughts, I just blocked it, and told myself “Stop it!”

@dodgersmom, you made a good analogy. DS has received at least 5 schools offered to wave the application fees. He is only somewhat interested in 3 of them and not sure if he will even apply. I noticed that most of the schools offering free applications are from not so ideal locations although the schools are pretty good. I suppose the free app did cause us to pay more attention to those schools.

Congrats to all the NMSFs! My DS is another that won’t be in that group. He does SUPER on the ACT (top 1%), but the PSAT just was not his test. :(

About the “no fee” apps … don’t forget that for every app you fill out it will require you to send the ACT/SAT scores which are NOT free!

I’m not seeing any of these “no fee” apps for DS. Are they coming by mail or e-mail? Just out of curiosity, which states are getting these? A friend & I have decided that schools don’t want our kids from our state! haha

@beadymom, you are right, even with free app, we would still have to pay for ACT/SAT scores.
They came mostly on e-mails giving specific instructions with sign on codes. A couple of schools sent letters.
Of the top of my head, they were Case Western Reserves, U of Minnesota, Baylor, Tulane. There were a couple more but we were not interested and I can’t even remember their names.
