I just made an account and I can’t figure out how to navigate this site. I want to explain my predicament and any advice would be great (I don’t know how to post a new thread)
I’m a senior at a high school in central Florida who wants to major in industrial engineering.
I am certain I can get into any public college in Florida except for uf. I live close to ucf and would stay at home if I were to attend it (which I DO NOT want to do) where do you suggest I go???
Keep in mind that I would like to attend a respectable grad school outside of the state.
Usf?
Fsu?
I know that fsu shares their engineering program with famu which is one of the least respected universities in Florida.
Usf ranks 42 on usnews and world report in industrial engineering which is not bad but the rest of engineering programs are poorly ranked.
Do employers use usnews to evaluate employees???
Any input would be greatly valued :)

More good news here - DD14’s teacher finally submitted her recommendation to the CA on Monday! It had been done for most of the month but I don’t think he knew how to upload it. So relieved to have that final piece in before she submits the rest of her apps.

Oh - and the Seniors beat the Juniors in the powderpuff game! They moved it to yesterday from today so they could play in spite of the weather.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I’m so relieved the DS’11 is upstairs sleeping and not trying to drive home this morning. Hope everyone’s family arrive home safely!

“special” admits for athletes now starting to trickle in at DS’s school…Dartmouth and Wash U for a couple of his friends…sort of surprised about Wash U since it is DIII…guess their Thanksgiving will be especially satisfying this year…

Hi. My son is doing engineering in UMiami and he is a commuter so I know how you feel. I have many friends whose kids got into UF but decided to go to UCF because it was closer to home and because it was a more modern University. I also think UCF will be the next UF in the next few years. FSU is a huge school with many pluses like a great school spirit and some great programs, however it is in Tallahassee what is not the most exciting place to be for a college student. Have you consider living in campus and maybe going home on weekends? I do not think that any Florida school is huge in the Engineering ranks but as long as it is a ABET accredit program you will be fine. A lot of those schools will allow you to do a 5 year Master program so you will not necessary need to go anywhere unless you want a PhD.

Have been celebrating the good news , and saddened by some of the bad news from afar. Special condolences fogfog
Enjoying having sophomore college son home this week. After ED successfully submitted mid October, have really struggled to get S motivated to work diligently on RD apps. I suspect this is normal , but unnerving nonetheless. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for mid December news
Happy thanksgiving and safe travels to all

Thanks ddahwan. I want to go to fsu but I’ve heard stories of graduates of their engineering school with 3.5+ gpas who can only get local jobs because the famu/fsu college of engineering is not taken seriously. And I plan on leaving Florida for grad school and work. Should i just go to fsu? Or should i go to usf (the better engineering program but not well known school) I feel like if I move to Illinois then fsu might sound better to employers than usf although usf has a better program. Would either of the two schools make much of a difference?

DS11 came home last evening. We have him til Saturday morning. DS14 waited for him to come home to help him with last supplemental paragraph for his Common App that has Dec. 1 deadline. They are working on it now. My expection is that he will hit submit in the next two hours and we will be done for Thanksgiving. My stress level will go way down… at least for a couple of weeks. DS14 is applying Common App to one more school with a Dec.31 deadline… he still needs to write supplements for that.

It is really a pleasure to hear my guys talk about college, their workouts, and plans to go out with a group of mutual friends later today. They have not always been that close, but their bond is tightening as they mature. I treasure our limited time together.

Fog fog, my condolences to you. I hope this weekend brings you some down time and that you are able to take some time for yourself.

My two kiddos are snuggled on the couch watching TV together. They have always been pretty close but I think the impending separation is hitting home so they have been spending some good time together.

Winter is ways less hectic for us since neither kid plays a school or club sport so hopefully things will not be so stressful as we approach deadline season. Both kids still have their fair share of activities but no thing too intense.

I wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving! I’ve been prepping madly all day. DH has been in Copenhagen this week and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow at 12:30. I told him that the turkey will wait for no man, especially when his side of the family is coming to dinner. I think he owes me big time, LOL!

Stuckinflorida I might be wrong but I think your internships will be as important as your school work. You will need a good GPA to get a good internship but without some work experience is difficult to get a good job. This is one if the reasons schools like Northeastern are doing so well with their co-ops. I do not know what happened to your friend. You cannot base your future in one person’s luck or lack of. I would try to learn more about both programs and their internship programs. Do not discard UCF. I know you want to be far from home, but just to compare. Any state and even private schools are better known in their own state, unless you are talking about Michigan, UVA, UCLA and a handful more. Do not get discouraged specially if you plan to go to grad school somewhere else. Apply to both and do your research. You can always transfer if things do not work out.

fogfog, so sorry for your losses – so hard to lose both parents so close together like that. Thanksgiving will be difficult. hugs

Good news. I just checked the Common Application and D’s GC just submitted the school report. I was getting nervous because D has some Dec 1 deadline for merit scholarship consideration. Also few hours ago D submitted her UC app. I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

S officially finished the first trimester today and it looks like he’s keeping his 2nd place rank so far! One more trimester to solidify Salutatorian!

Happy Thanksgiving to all ! My D12 is thousands of miles away and wont be home for Thanksgiving
but we are cherishing every moment with S14, cant help but think that next year will be an empty nest at Thanksgiving.
I am thankful for all the experiences and opportunities that await our kids, God bless them and keep them all safe, near or far from home.

Only 3 more weeks to winter break and my baby coming home!!

I am thankful for all of you, and for those of the earlier classes, who posted information about this arduous college admissions task. Don’t know how we would get through it without you. Blessings to you all.

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Turkey Day! Enjoy your time with friends and family. Got both boys home this year – first time in four years. The oldest son works and lives about 50 miles away. He came in last night with lots of laundry to wash! The younger son, after a good night’s sleep, will train one more day before he heads to Foot Locker South, a prestigious cross country race. Who knows if the boys will be here with us next year? We, too, will be empty nesters!

Happy Thanksgiving all! We picked Barnardgirl up from the airport (after a three hour flight delay) and headed straight to the movies to see Catching Fire! Good times- helped her wind down as she was quite tense while her flight was getting delayed over and over and over again.

Depending on where S ends up next year, we might spend Thanksgiving in NYC next year!

Happy Thanksgiving! I too am very thankful for all of you. It is wonderful to be able to share in this process with such a warm group, who are encouraging through the difficult times, and who share in the happiness that comes with the good times. Wishing God’s blessings on all of you and your loved ones.

Happy thanksgiving!!! I am so thankful for so many things - family, friends and wonderful coworkers. It has been beautiful in Oregon lately and enjoying the sunshine. I am thankful for all of your support and sharing information. Looking forward to the next phase for D and your kids progress with the apps and admissions but at the same time wondering where did all the years go by.

Much to be thankful for. Both DS home- next year… Who knows? Delicious food- everyone pitched in. So happy- submitted Common App today! Relaxing tomorrow- no Black Friday stress in this house!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!! I agree, so much to be thankful for. No black Thursday/Friday stress at our house either.
