Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congrats 4beardolls on Coca Cola advancement. DS14 will focus on school work for next two weeks, then push through writing supplements for final Common App due Jan. 1st.

Congratulations 4beardolls!!! That’s incredible. Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!!!

4beardolls - Congratulations to your DS!! What a huge accomplishment - that is awesome!

Congrats to all others on their application submissions and acceptances!

Two more apps in. DS may be done. he is waiting to hear from some EAs.

Congrats Moonmaid!

BarnardMom, we have some serious flaky stuff going on here too. Received a big envelope from one of S14’s EA schools and thought it was an acceptance - nope, more marketing material and a letter encouraging him to apply. He applied in early October!

Have received several letters from state flagship also encouraging him to apply. He applied in late October because he was nominated to apply for 100% full paid merit scholarship which had a Nov 1 deadline. So umm yes, already applied.

Do none of these schools have computer systems that talk to each other? Both of these schools are safeties for him and it’s sort of…idk…a turn off?

My DS has gotten into Tulane, U if Pitt, Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Yipee ! Still waiting on other schools.

5boys - I remember that app season with your S, enough to make me sick and I was just watching from a distance! Though my S did ED too and I thought I’d lose all my hair over it.

So you all know - 5boys S took an amazing gap year and ended up at a great school.

I just wish admissions depts would go dark until they admit or decline - it’s so nerve wracking to get these thin or think envelopes from admissions departments! What’s wrong with them anyway?

Two weeks until we start hearing some more decisions! D is just about set on a school already it’s just about anti-climactic and I’m wondering how some of these schools got on the list in the first place - lol. Trust me at the time she was all over the place but things have shaken out over time.

I was thinking of 5boys’ Ds12 the other day. I followed his blog during his amazing adventure. We were watching a documentary about a bicycle race that followed the continental divide. Made me wonder if there was a documentary about the hikers on the PCT. There were several, but couldn’t tell what year their treks were from. Is your DS in any if those documentaries? :)

5boys, your DS12’s gap year sounds amazing.
Congrats to your DS14’s two acceptances.

Thanks all! He actually hasn’t been on any documentaries, but has written a bunch of stuff in journals and blogs on how to prepare for the hike, and has been asked to speak at numerous functions. Because he was the youngest to ever hike the entire trail, and also the 5th fastest, a lot of people want to know how he was so successful at it.

I am a huge advocate for gap years. My S had an absolutely life changing year, and it has helped him in SO many ways. After his hike he took a Wilderness EMT and Basic EMT class and got a job at a National Park as an EMT and Search and Rescue team member, which is unheard of an 18 year old. He is pre-med, so that job was HUGE. He now got a job on campus as an EMT and gets paid A LOT, even when all he has to do is carry a beeper to class, and NO freshman has ever gotten that job. He is now going to take a guide training course and will be able to lead trips through the Outdoor Club… more money and leadership. Anyway, he LOVES, LOVES his college, and it couldn’t be a better fit for him. I am SO impressed by this college, that I would just send DS14 and be done, if they only had a good theater program…but they really don’t.

DS14 is also considering a gap year, so we will see. He isn’t as invested in his ED school, as DS 12 was, which is probably by my doing… trying SO hard to keep expectations down. I know that whatever happens he will end up at a great school for him… it will all work out. I think he has a really good chance at his EA schools, and he really likes one of them, the other he hasn’t visited, but I think he would really like it. I don’t know if I told you all this, but he was going to audition for a BFA right up till last month, when he decided he wanted a BA in Theater instead. So his list was cut in half.

Thanks for the congrats on S2’s Tulane acceptance and merit scholarship. Of course, he still has to submit his Paul Tulane scholarship application, due Dec. 15. Without it, we could still swing it, based on the Net Price Calculator, but it would definitely be welcome!

Tulane has family history for us, and now he has a meaningful safety school that he doesn’t have to “settle” for if his ED1 application to Claremont doesn’t come through. Of course, now he is seriously looking at the rest of the schools he thought he would definitely apply to, and rethinking them. I think the appeal of being in the same city as big brother (they are close) and only an hour plane ride away is making him think twice about applying to other schools further away. Claremont is still a perfect fit for him, and I know he would love it there, but I think schools like Duke (reach) and Occidental (safety) are having less appeal, especially given his busy schedule, senior burnout and the prospect of additional supplemental essays. He will probably apply to two more, Rice (reach, but he loved it during a visit and it’s only a 3-1/2 hour drive away) and Pomona (another reach, but again, part of the Claremont consortium, he liked it a lot and they are one of the no-loan after EFC schools). He also will have to write a bunch of local scholarship applications come the new year. It’s tough to keep a senior motivated when they are so ready to move on!

Congrats to all for the acceptances and scholarship news! Some of the kids here seem so passionate and motivated and I’m getting pretty much nothing (except interest in St. Mary’s because it would make it easier to travel to the local anime convention). I’m pessimistic about the applications he’s submitted (except his safety) and about how we’ll ever get more submitted unless I make everyone miserable by pushing. Thought we’d make some progress over the break but it isn’t looking good. Sigh…

I’m with you, crowlady. DS has three RDs due Jan. 1 still hanging and much to my dismay, he did not even think about them over the break! He thinks he still has plenty of time, but they are all his reach schools with more extensive essays than he has had to do so far. I kinda wish he would just stick with his 5 EA apps already in. I told him he would have to reimburse us for scores and transcripts sent if he doesn’t follow through. I just don’t want his Christmas break to be miserable. I feel for these kids with all they have to do.

This is my first post in this thread. I’ve been reading it on occasion, but would start to have panic attacks (I’m only partially kidding) when I would see how many students were getting their applications in, while at our household - zero. I’m happy to say that S1 has submitted two apps, which has made me much happier! I hated to get on him too much about it because he has a heavy course load and I didn’t want to add to his stress. I looked over his list of other schools and the rest seem very doable, time-wise.

Moonmaid: Congrats on the Tulane offer. One of my son’s friends posted on her Facebook that she also got in – with a $30K scholarship. It’s not her first choice, but an excellent backup.

Meanwhile, Son '14 ran in the Foot Locker South 5K race over the weekend. Did all right, too. But he returned him with a head cold and an AP English essay to do. He also needs to finish some short essays for a couple of schools and scholarships. He looked thrilled when I mentioned this, but we reminded him that Christmas break is coming.

Upon return home from our Thanksgiving trip, youngest found out he’s been accepted to Eckerd College. Of course, he read the post card from his admission officer BEFORE he read his acceptance letter since our mail was stacked on our table with newest things on top. He didn’t mind.

This will be where he is going IF finances work out as he really never found another school anywhere comparable for what he wants to do (his fit) with Tropical Marine Bio/Science. Eckerd blew away “the competition” when we compared schools and what undergrads/grads have done. It’s amazing how a small school that isn’t ranked in the Top 100 (in National Polls anyway) can do that when you get to specialties. I think he’s really going to enjoy it there. Hopefully he can stay on top of his non science classes too…

If finances don’t work out, he’ll be taking a gap year and working - or could decide up until July to apply to school #2. He wanted Eckerd or bust, so that’s what it is. Hopefully it will work for him. His acceptance was step 1.

Here’s hoping many get good news in Dec - and congrats to those who have been receiving some already!

Good news creekland! A great way to end the holiday :)

Congrats to everyone else’s acceptances and scholarships too!

DS is anxiously awaiting ED1 decision and if that doesn’t work out he’ll likely switch to his number 2 school for ED2. Meanwhile still waiting on a couple of state schools which he should be hearing from soon. Only 2 more regular decision apps to complete and then he’s done…yay

Good luck to all who are playing the waiting game!

Way to go SoWest - it is indeed a relief to get that first app submitted.

Congrats DS of Creekland! Must feel great to get into ist choice!

Congrats to all those with new acceptances and scholarship awards!

DD submitted two more apps yesterday and got first draft essays for a third done. She’s hoping to edit those essays and get that app submitted by the end of the week. Luckily there’s a professional day in there so that gives her a little extra time. Then it’s just two more for her really longshot reach schools to do!

Congrats to all with the most recent acceptances and scholarships. I know it’s a big relief to have one or more in the bag early. Congrats to Creeklands’s DS on getting into his dream school. Keeping fingers crossed for you that finances work out.

Things are calm on our end. Last application and scholarship apps were submitted on 11/30- a mere 6 hours before deadline… The crazy thing is that this school is K14’s top choice. Advice for future kiddos- don’t save your favorite school for last. After writing essays for 11 other schools (+ their Honors Colleges & Scholarships), it was a much harder process than when everything was new and fresh.
