Well, well. DS actually said last night that he was grateful for my help and advice this college admission season and that he was glad he listened to it re applying to a range of schools, with a range of admission dates. His original list had 10 schools on it, and I pushed him pretty hard to get supplements, etc. done (or at least nearly final) early because he plays a fall sport and had that plus a heavy workload. I also had advised him to submit to a safety with rolling admissions, and at least one EA school.

He took my advice and was accepted in early November to Alabama with full-tuition merit so he was happy to know he was at least going to college next year (gap year didn’t appeal to him). Then this weekend he got accepted EA to one of his top two choices with $22K merit. He has two other apps in but the first we will hear is in February. So now he has decided that he is done with apps, except for one – Northwestern (DH and I are alums). All he needs to do for that is put the finishing touches on his essay. He’s already deleted every other potential school from the Common App.

And putting the money situation in concrete terms does work to get them to give it serious consideration. We are full pay, but we have told DS that the money is designated for undergraduate studies and what is left over is his. Since he wants to go to graduate school, he can use the money for that or however he sees fit. If he goes to Alabama he will have enough to buy a house in some parts of the country! If he chooses the EA school with merit, he will have enough to fund two years of grad school (assuming no merit for that). And if he chooses NU or another school that won’t give him much merit, he will have nothing left. We laid it all out on a spreadsheet and went over it with him, so now his top choices have shifted a bit.

Congratulations to all who have heard good news, and good luck to those still waiting!

Dave I so understand where your son is at. A huge part of my son’s issue with his ED rejection was his football team’s disappointing season, and coping with tough, grinding losses for the first time, and the utter physical and mental exhaustion that accompanies football. The coach who led them to a state championship 2 years ago left in May with key members of the coaching staff, and the team had a very atypical losing season as a result. He found out 2 days before ED results that he was not getting district honors, which he received as a junior. Getting State All Academic 1st team the other night at the football dinner did ease the sting a little bit, though, and now he has an alumni interview coming up with his final reach school, so I think he is getting back on track. But he was making noises about not finishing app to his safety because it requires 4 essays! Thank God his brother will be home from law school next week to help convince him that 4 brief essays isn’t so bad.

Thanks! It is so nice to have an EA or ED acceptance in hand. S-2011 didn’t do this as we were totally unsure regading the FA piece of the puzzle. That meant that we were waiting until the end of March for all of the decisions other than the one safety school that was rolling admissions and said yes back in late Oct./early Nov.

Hi All
Long week here waiting for envelopes.
One thing I wanted to mention, several years back, my neighbor’s son was rejected from our state flagship and admitted to Vandy and Wake Forest.
So sometimes the admissions doesn’t make sense yet they end up in great places.

Hi! I’ve just spent a good amount of time trying to catch up with everyone. I’m also on the 2013 thread, so just at this time last year I was seeing all the good, the bad, the stress, and the joy. Congrats to all with their top choices, their great safeties, and the security of knowing they are in somewhere great!

It’s odd about the deferral that I read about from a safety (I’m sorry I can’t remember who it was)… makes me nervous about what is really a safety. And so true what 5boys said about ED becoming the new RD! I said that exact thing last year to my husband when I noticed it becoming clear that so many kids seem to be choosing the early route. My eldest attends Duke (ED, one and done) where last year they had 2500 early apps and 942 were admitted. This year they had 3200 apps and 800 were admitted. Thank goodness he made it in last year (and also before they changed the stupid Common App)

So my 2014er had been planning on applying ED to Cornell, where his grandfather went. But he wanted to look at smaller schools, and we visited Dartmouth and that seemed like a perfect fit for him. He went the ED route, and had hopes, but it was a deferral… D’mouth is a school that does not give a lot of weight to the ED nonlegacy, non-athlete kids. They don’t even have local adcomms.

So Mrs.Pepper, “we” are still doing apps here! Two more high reaches (Cornell is back now), two high targets, two safeties, and 3 safety/safeties. This is all using Naviance stats, which obviously only take GPA and SAT into account, but it still can give a good idea.

He has an EA app out to UVA and will hear in late January. It’s hard to see friends get into schools. His good friend got into Tufts ED. Son is applying there as well.

I also meant to say that 1 hour before the D’mouth announcement, Tufts admissions sent a cute e-mail. My son liked it and it made him feel a little wanted. Maybe that timing was perfect. Time to put his heart into those supplements!

Today is the last Finals day for my D and I keep on checking her grades online (like every minute). 3 out of her 6 classes posted finals score and final grade already and those are As. She needed at least 4 As to be Val. The remaining 3 classes depend on her Finals score. Gosh, this is nerve wracking.

D and I are planning a little mailbox party for Saturday. Chapman is mailing decisions tomorrow & it should arrive to us Saturday. We’re getting a box of donuts & some coffee & camping by the box waiting for the mailman! I am pretty sure it will be positive news, as her audition went really well. She has acceptances already to Bama and Tulane, but this will be her first decision that relies on her audition. Here’s hoping!

Well, that was disappointing. I thought the nearby (hour and a half away) EA school’s letter would arrive today, but it didn’t. Only another glossy piece on some of their programs. Thankfully DS is so busy he is not really thinking about it…like I am.

DS is still at school, but he has gotten texts from his friends that the Boston College letters have hit the mailboxes. He is hopeful he will have a letter in the box when he gets home . . . waiting.

Congratulations and good wishes!!! I like reading up on all your posts. D is done with essays and everything, she is afraid to hit the send button. Waiting for the holidays to push her to hit that “submit” button.

Good grief another thin envelope awaits D, I think it’s a deferral. Can I just say thank god I came up with a great list of schools filled with - if she likes this one, that one is easier to get into and she’d like it just as much? phew

She’s got 3 yesses and I believe it’s now 2 deferrals. Still haven’t heard from either safety yet so I have to keep telling myself -we applied to a wide range for exactly this reason. At least I can comfortably say we must have made the list just right.

I need to go grocery shopping and wrap gifts and frost cookies and make fudge and I just feel exhausted and don’t want to do any of it. But, Barnardgirl comes home tomorrow!

Congrats, Glido!! So happy for you and your DS!!

eyemamom - trying to prep myself for some inevitable thin envelopes come Mar/Apr. As you said, glad to have a wide range and one yes so far. So glad your D has three yes’s already!

We got the nicest letter I ever read for a deferral - it didn’t mean she isn’t qualified, they received so many applications they only accepted the highest level first, no need to send scores or grades. However - one of her friends did get in and the girls have the same act score, similar classes and grades. I told D, this probably means you’ll get in next round then. She doesn’t seem all that bummed, but I boxed and wrapped presents while she studied for her last midterm and we just got to chit chat and relax and it seems to have brought her blood pressure down.
