Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@beadymom that sounds a lot like me and my S. I’ll miss his music a lot too. I hope we can stay connected and close once he leaves. My D12 did let us still be a part of everything, but girls are different, so I dont know.

She is home visiting for the holidays and has got special permission to take her cat back with her, I’m a bit nervous about the added responsibilities for her , since it has been quite a lot of pressure at college, but she’s adamant that it will make her feel less homesick. So I’m confused…

We finally got an answer from CA support yesterday and they fixed our issue. It looks like this is prevalent as reported in the CA thread under College Admissions.

D does not start school until the 14th. We have a semi-year round so our calendar is weird (short summer, longer Thanksgiving/Christmas/Spring breaks).

D would have had a snow day today but they are not scheduled back from break until next Monday. Could be that Monday or Tuesday could be snow/cold days based on the sub-zero forecast for next week. As a senior, their schedule is set and they won’t have make-up days - just the underclassmen as someone else posted for their school.

For everyone in the northeastern quarter of the country - stay safe and stay warm!

2018Dad - so glad CA Support was able to fix your issue!

Maryjay60 and AvonHSDad - Congratulations on your soon-to-be arrivals!

DS has just sprung on me that he might add another school to Common App! Is anyone familiar with Florida Institute of Technology?

Snowing here, with big fat flakes. But we are still on break, so it’s nice to just watch from the window! It is causing some flight delays, though. My MIL is scheduled to fly out this evening to Dallas and her flight is delayed. My parents are arriving tomorrow but the snow will be long gone by then, but it’s also supposed to be the coldest day of the winter. They are from CA so it is quite an adjustment. They’ll be staying with the kids while DH and I head to Hawaii for our annual trip this weekend.

Snowing in Maine! What else is new …we had 2 ft of snow in December and are expected to get another foot of snow between today and tomorrow. School was canceled today and most likely it will be canceled tomorrow…I am in Providence and we are expected to get about a foot of snow…most of the local schools are canceled…

Snow here in our area as well - 5-6 inches so far. HS doesn’t start until next Monday and our college sophomore has another week. Really enjoying spending time with them and the snow is gorgeous. Pot of chili and a roaring fire for tonight. CSS sent to all schools on the list back in October and FAFSA completed today. Glad that is all done.

All the shoveling I did yesterday was for naught. We got a few more inches of snow overnight, but there was so much wind that everything that was previously shoveled got blown back- in huge drifts. Ugh. I had to dig a path for the dog AGAIN. His legs are only about 6 inches tall. He decided he didn’t want to just stay on the path and took a flying leap into a huge drift, then dug his way out to go under the deck. I thought I was going to have to rescue him, but he got back to the door on his own. Phew!

Hi Everyone, Happy New Year!!
I hadn’t given having an empty nest much thought until the subject came up here. D is our only child so this is our first and last experience with college admissions. All apps are in and she has bunch of acceptances. She will hopefully hear from the rest over the next few weeks.
It looks like tomorrow may be a snow day here on Long Island. Sounds like a good day to finish the CSS profile and maybe start FASFA.
Congrats to all that have received good news the past few weeks!!

@BarnardMom - your dog sounds adorable!

Snow day here in Virginia. A good thing since I woke myself up several times last night by hacking. Son '14 can spend the day doing his AP English paper, which is due Monday or when we get back to school. He has an indoor track meet this weekend – weather permitting.

Meanwhile, we are starting to hear him zero in on what school he will attend. College football bowl games have a way of getting him to think about that. Three of his acceptances came from schools who had teams in bowls. He’s not selecting his school based on football, but it probably will be a bit of a factor in his decision. After all, he pointed out, he cannot study all the time.

School’s closed here today… meaning no more cushion on keeping graduation in May. Any more snow days and we’re into June.

I’m not a happy camper as it’s only 4 - 5 inches, the system fully out of here now, AND I grew up in an area that would laugh at even having a delay for such a small snowfall. We’ve been here 18 years, so I should be used to the “new normal,” but on days like today, I’m not.

Oh well. Time to make a Plan B for the day. Perhaps youngest can work on some scholarship apps he’s mentioned.

My Ds’ school doesn’t require seniors to make up snow days, so D14 is hoping for lots of them. The graduation is set for early June, and will not change.

I grew up in a town that was notorious for being the only one around to have school whenever it snowed. We had one or two snow days a year. The attitude towards snow has changed since those olden days.

D is taking a short break after submitting the Jan 1 apps earlier this week. Just two more to go for Jan 15. I’ll be busy this month trying to get FAFSA and CSS done as well as possible with incomplete information.

Second snow day here and seniors don’t make up snow days. Graduation is scheduled for May 31st, which seems so far away but I know it will be here in no time at all. It’s hard to tell how much snow we have as it’s blowing around so much - maybe 10 inches. But at least it’s not heavy on the power lines. Of course, our road isn’t plowed (except for the pile the middle of the night plow left at the end of the driveway!) so no one could get out to go to school anyway. And lots of colleges are included on the cancellations running on TV.

Our graduation is May 30th and won’t be affected by snow days. They’ve already had the kids order the graduation announcements! No changing it now!

My Barnardgirl got an email that Barnard is closed today- interesting, since they don’t start classes until the 21st anyway. I’m glad we didn’t have to worry about her getting back this weekend. I hope the weekend she’s traveling back is storm free.

Our seniors don’t make up snow days either. With such a large school system, graduation dates for the high schools are staggered so that everyone can book appropriate venues for the ceremony and I can only imagine the headaches schedule changes would cause.
DS’s graduation is scheduled for June 17 (I think - is that a Saturday?) at a nearby college’s arena. Nice because it’s roomy enough so that tickets aren’t required. But sometimes I think it would be nice to have it at a historic venue, like DAR Constitution Hall as some other local schools do. But I’d rather not have to parcel out tickets among friends and family if there were a ticket limit!

For those of you in the frigid parts of the US, stay warm! And remember, it’s not too late for your S or D to consider colleges in the mild and surprisingly sunny (this weekend) Pacific NW ;-). How ironic is it that D wants to go to school in the midwest or east? Go figure. It’s -21 near her Aunt’s house this morning in southern Wisconsin and a relatively balmy 45 at our house. Let’s see if the enthusiasm for attending a school in a totally different and icy cold environment wanes after this weekend. Oh, and on the plus side, Seahawks fans don’t have to worry about attending a freezing cold game outdoors this weekend. :-).

Speaking of cold, d looked at Concordia College in Moorhead (as in Fargo/Moorhead). Brrrr…

D doesn’t go back to school until the 6th so she missed out on a sure school closing. We close around here if there is even a hint of bad weather. She goes to a private school and they never have to make up days anyway. We got a lot of ice with this storm so I am actually all for the public schools closing this time.

My d can’t decide if she wants it snowy and cold or warm and sunny for college - lol (who can’t narrow down something that simple?)

After the moratorium on discussing college she came in with the pb teen catalogue last night while I was cooking dinner to discuss how she’ll be decorating her dorm room. We’re making progress if she’s moved on to the most important part to her.
