Parents of the HS Class of 2014

momreads, I hope the girl listened to you and applied to the rolling adm schools. I also convinced ds to apply to more rolling adm ones and he is grudgingly doing them. I don’t see anything wrong with applying to more schools as they get one shot at this. I’d much rather have too many choices than none come this April.

Congratulations AvonHSDad!

I’m with your h, momreads. There was a “cold” day here yesterday as the predicted high was -6 with windchill around -35. Too cold for school, so what do the kids do? Head to the mall or go hang out with friends, of course! NOBODY stays in. So why cancel? Worried about the little kids walking/waiting at the bus stops? Close the elementary schools. The buildings all have heat, for goodness sake, any parent who thinks conditions are dangerous is certainly free to keep his or her own child in for the day.

4beardolls: What concerns me is that this classmate of my son’s does not realize that she applied to a bunch of reach schools with little or no chance of acceptance. I guess no one has told her that the admissions game is a tough one. My son understood that, and his scores are nearly 300 points higher than hers. He wanted schools where he would be comfortable and challenge him academically but offered merit money so the loans could be low. There are a lot of recent grads still seeking employment, and they often take anything just to start paying on those loans.

ordinarylives: You are right. The kids will be out all day today.

Congrats AvonHSDad!

momreads - hope that girl isn’t heartbroken this spring. Did she or her parents get any advice from the GC? I think some people think you throw enough apps out there it will be like spaghetti and something will stick.

We had a 2hr delay today, not far from No Va. My d’s school is like a college campus though where they have to go from building to building for classes. And her uniform is a khaki skirt, but she broke uniform and wore a pair of regular khaki pants.

Her brother who goes to school up in the snowy tundra up north wants to know why everyone is freaking out over a little cold. He didn’t even bring his coat home for break and thought I was going to let him go out in a t-shirt and zip up hoodie.

Congrats AvonFamily!

I was told by a neighbor who drives a school bus that they have to cancel because their engine blocks aren’t heated (too rare to make it worth the expense) so the diesel fuel gels when it is that cold. Our kids are out again today too. However, our roads are also very icy because the snow is blowing across that cold pavement and making black ice. Kids aren’t going anywhere around here.

S has procrastinated getting homework and his last college app done and I’m none too happy with him. These extra snow days aren’t teaching him the lesson he needs to learn! When I woke up today, he was just going to bed… ugh!

Another day off from school due to sub zero temps. I think this might be our fifth “snow day” this season. Even the local unis were closed yesterday and some today. I am thankful for the sunshine today.

A snow day off here, too.
2016Barnardmom, I hear you. DS did not get everything (college apps, science fair project etc…) done last night. That was the deadline we “imposed” since today is the first day of school. So he was overjoyed to learn it’s a snow day today!

Thanks to all the interview tips. I’ll pass those to my daughter. These interviews are coming fast and furious. She now has three scheduled interviews.

Congrats AvonHSDad! What happy news!

BIG congrats and hugs to AvonHSDad! Exciting news to start the new year!

Congrats, AvonGramps!

Congratulations, AvonHSDad on your new grandchild!

Congratulations AvonHSDad! Woot! Woot!

Congrats AvonHSDad! I don’t know how I missed that news!

Congrats AvonHSDad!!!

A lot of schools here on Long Island had delayed openings. Our school district did not.
D was of coarse upset that her school was one of the only ones around here that didn’t delay.

Thanks all for the congrats! A new baby grandchild in the family is always a wonderful reason for a “brag” and a celebration!

Has anyone suggested test optional schools since you indicated that she is not a great test taker? Just a thought and another possible path to an acceptance or two for her. The only problem is that the application deadlines for those schools may have already passed.

Rainy here. I swear, it feels cold just reading the news from everywhere else though!

AvonHSDad: Test-optional schools are a good idea. The biggest issue, I see, is that this student needs money for college. So I get the impression that she applied to many of the high stakes schools because she thought they may give lots of grants, scholarships, etc. Of course, you need to get in.

I really do not think a lot of kids realize the competition out there. It is well beyond your school walls. Son '14 had a friend who thought he was a shoo-in for MIT. He was even told that he would get in. My son told his friend that no one is a shoo-in for such a high level school. Make sure you have a back up. The friend had outstanding scores, but it’s more than scores/GPA. Guess what? He got a rejection note from MIT, so he said he will settle for our state university, which is outstanding. He just did not see how tough the competition is.
