Parents of the HS Class of 2014

How many have 1/15 decisions coming? There are 4 coming out next week for D. 2 are safeties and 2 are matches.

We just signed up for the first admitted students day at the end of January. Thankfully that school is only 2 hours away so we don’t need a hotel.

Congrats on the ED admit ovrseasmom!

Our '14ers are back to the grind for final LAST semester of high school! Where did the time go?

Our DS has a schedule change (electives) which makes his schedule a little easier - kind of nice for the finale. Anybody else have any schedule changes?

I would be embarrassed to tell you how many schools my dd applied to. But what happened was this

She was deferred by her #1 school very early on and we were all SHOCKED as this was not the hardest to get into of her bunch. We panicked and she quickly applied to like 6 more then she had. She has not received any rejections yet and was deferred by 3

So now we are left with way too many choices and we are stressed!! there is still a lot of hope for #1 but we won’t know until March!!

My DS has applied to 9, admitted to 4 EA, one of which has been eliminated for financial reasons. Only one of the remaining schools will definitely be financially doable, though it will be a reach to get into the program he wants. The rest should be fairly sure admits to his program, but a reach for sufficient merit aid.

@mathmomvt - Any Canadian schools?

^^^ Yes, Waterloo. That’s the one we know we would be able to afford, but don’t know if he’ll get into the program he wants (Mechatronic Engineering – though now he says he may prefer regular Mechanical which should not be a problem for admission). He’s a dual citizen, so can go for the Canadian price.

^^^expatSon isn’t yet certain if he wants Marine Bio, Environmental Studies or Political Science (he’s got some aptitude for each), so Dal seemed a good choice.

Hopefully, being admitted to the Faculty of Science will still allow him access to the humanities. I don’t recall ‘cross-pollination’ being difficult at the UofT (30+ years ago :frowning: ), but I’ve read posts suggesting that schools can sometimes be less than obliging in this regard.

And, yes, the dual citizenship sure makes finances easier.

Usually a certain number of humanities courses are required in any case, so I’m sure he’ll have access, and could “transfer” to the other Faculty eventually, if he changes his mind. Waterloo’s engineering programs are among the most regimented I’ve seen, which has its positives and negatives. Dual citizenship should be awesome for co-op as well.

D14 applied to ten and was admitted to U Michigan EA. All the others are RD, so she is now in waiting mode. Several of her ten are reaches, and the others are admit safeties, but who knows about finances. Now that she is in at U Michigan, we are comfortable that she is going to college.

We have encouraged her to keep an open mind, and not pick any favorites yet, but yesterday her school counselor asked “What’s your top choice?” The counselor would not accept “I don’t have a one” as an answer. Pretty frustrating.

Mimama: That is a terrible counselor. I always ask "what are your favorite five; if I ask at all. My DD’s school has a general rule which everyone has to follow- you don’t ask seniors where they are applying or where they got in unless they volunteer it. It makes for a much less stressed environment compared to DS’s school which would put in giant letters on a wall the name of each student and where they were accepted. Parents and students got very “catty” and “rude” at DS’s school during the college admission time. What is an interesting observation is that the students at DD’s school have had much better admission results but other than the students posting it on facebook you would have no idea that 5 got into Harvard early.

Congrats to all the acceptances so far. I have some good articles on what to do after a deferral and I will share them later today.

Yes, please.

MImama: My son’s response, when asked his top choice, is, “The one that gives me the most merit money so I do not have to graduate thousands in debt.”

momreads: I will coach D14 on that response. She was really frustrated that a counselor doesn’t already know that, but I’ve heard worse stories out of that office. (“Why would you take the SAT? Every college in Michigan accepts the ACT.”)

Happy day today! D got into Quinnipiac! She really likes this school (in top five as itsv suggested above).

What do you guys think…she has the opportunity to shadow a student for a day. She will sit through two classes, eat lunch there, go to the dorms. Should we do this? She is a bit nervous about it and she thinks it might be too long of a day/bored.

She is definitely going to accepted student day. Is the shadow student thing above overkill?

Congratulations on everyone’s acceptances! PS–we applied to 12 schools LOL.

Congrats, cakeisgreat! I’d encourage the shadow student day, but not sure how that differs from Accepted Student Day.

Congrats on the grandbaby, AvonHSDad!

We just logged on and did the FAFSA. I was expecting it to be much more involved. I remember last year people talking about having to get the PIN a day in advance in order to do it. We logged on, applied for the pin, filled out the FAFSA paperwork based on 2012 tax info and it’s done! For those that have done it, there was a six-digit number on the last page with no commas next to EFC. I assume that is our EFC?? If so, it’s around what I was expecting, but looked odd because of the odd formatting.

We had another winter storm come through, sort of! It started freezing rain yesterday mid-morning. My younger son’s school cancelled early so I picked up both boys around noon. And school was out today. Should be fine to go back tomorrow. This was day 2 for us - with 0 snow days built into the schedule. DS14’s school says they will add them on at the end of the year - and seniors don’t have to go longer so he’s loving it! The younger one’s school has now taken away extra days - president’s day, Easter Monday. The area 45 minutes north of us are now on day 8 of snow days!! Yuck!!

On FAFSA and CSS profile.
Since we are doing them based on estimate, do we need to send an update as soon as we have the the 2013 figures after filing taxes? If so, how do you send an update?

My apologies if this has been asked and answered before.

Yes, you need to update with 2013 numbers. For the FAFSA, you log back in and make a correction. It’ll be a week or two after you file your taxes before you can use the data retrieval tool. And make sure that if you owe, you pay with electronic debit right away.

Can’t tell you about the profile as I’ve never had a kid interested in a school that required it.

Phew. He finished the last college application essay and it has been submitted. He ended up with 6 schools. He dropped one last week because as he was trying to write the "Why ____ " essay, he said he realized he’d rather go to either of the schools he was admitted to EA than there, so why apply? I’m happy to save $75 if he has no intention of going there.

I remember updating the FAFSA- When you go back into it, I think it asks if you want to update it and you just do it. I don’t think I’ve done the Profile based on estimated numbers. I can’t remember now.

The Michigan competitive scholarship paperwork came home from the school today. He applied to 3 schools in state and 3 schools out of state, so I’ll jump through those hoops just in case.

OH! And the school that hadn’t downloaded all of his stuff from CA has now downloaded the final items. So I guess they will review his application after all.

The profile is a pain to update. If you’ve already sent it to a school, you can’t update it online and re-send it to them. You can update it online and send the updated version to new schools, but for schools that it was already sent to, you have to print out a copy and hand-write the corrections on it and mail it to them. (truly!) If the numbers are very close, contact them and ask them if they want you to or not. Some schools will tell you not to bother, especially if they’re getting the update numbers on your updated FAFSA anyhow, and/or making you send them tax returns. I’m hoping to be able to wait and not send the Profile until we have final numbers, but I don’t know if it will be possible with several schools having a Feb 1 deadline.

My son has one school that needs the CSS, and it’s a small, liberal arts school interested in his running. Unfortunately, I do not envision my son going there because of the expense, and he has other offers on the table. But we’ll see. At least he finally finished the supplement for that school while sitting in guidance the other day (he’s an aide to the college counselor).

It’s been a really good college season at his school – so far. One of his best friends is heading to Cornell in the hotel management school. He’s also an outstanding polo player – do not laugh. Another is going to the Merchant Marine Academy on a full ride, with the chance to play basketball there (the young is 6-9). Another just learned he got accepted to West Point. Hopefully they maintain contact with each other once they get to college. It will be nice to see what happens to them. My older son still keeps in contact with two girls from high school. They text all the time, and try to get together as much as possible.
