I haven’t gone as far as plotting out the entire curriculum, but I did give DS a brief presentation to encourage him to prep for AP Macro and take the CLEP exam for College Algebra to knock a few more credits out. He hasn’t taken a lot of AP’s but he did pass the CLEP for US History.

Partyoffour - I worry about the jinxing too! Omg, this college process is making me a nut. And if I hear from one more parent that my kids have nothing to worry about… do they realize a lot of schools accept less than 10% of applicants and 70%+ of applicants are qualified for those few spots?? Sorry, needed to vent.

akmom124-My DH interviews for his school and last year he had a girl no show. What matter to him was the student’s follow-up with my DH. This particular student lied and said she had tried to call and email my DH. Well he knew that wasn’t true. It is important your DH write and say 1.I sent a reply two weeks ago and it appears it did not go through. Cut and past the original reply in the body of her message. Explain that the phone required a password which she was unaware. 2. Mention that she showed up on the day of the designated email and waited 30 minutes. Only then did she discover the problem with the email two weeks ago. 3. State the college is one of her top choices and that she would like to interview at any time and location convenient for the interviewer even if she has to drive miles or have it at midnight-you get the picture. My DH says a mature response gets him to reconsider but when the student starts to make excuses/lies he just gets a negative image.

I guess a good lesson which I force my DD to do even though she hates it is to email the interview the day before and confirm everything. I imagine your daughter’s interviewer will understand; it seems that most schools are still interviewing right now. Good luck.

crowlady, I know a lot of kids who bloomed in college. Here is to the hope that our kids do well in college and in particular real life. Our robot isn’t going too well and they are meeting very long hours and that means negative effect on the grades. As a parent, the only thing I can do is hope for the best.

We have an awful thing this afternoon. My d’s beloved cat is dying. She has lymphoma and it’s pretty fast growing. We already brought her into the animal ER when she was struggling breathing. After many tests and specialists she was given prednisone and doc said she’ll either die in a week or two if this doesn’t work, or this works and she lasts about 6 - 8 weeks. Ugh. This cat is only 8 and has been d’s sidekick for most of her childhood. We didn’t want to tell d everything until we knew the entire story. We’re going to talk about it all today and decide how we want to handle everything - in other words, how far do we let this go?

Thanks all for your words of advice. DD was able to connect with interviewer last night and they’ve set up another meeting for next Saturday afternoon. While it means coming back from seeing Providence College a bit earlier than we’d planned, it’s not a problem as PC isn’t really one of DD’s top choices. She got a really good merit scholarship there and we’re basically revisiting to see if she wants to keep it in the running. If so, there will be other times we can pop down and she can see it more. And I will make sure she emails next Friday to confirm!

I also think that once she put her password in, all the email line in her phone were sent as I got one she had sent on January 27th to me and it indicated it was sent that day. So I’m assuming the interviewer also finally received the original email with the original sending date and time. She really wants to meet with this woman as she has lots of questions about going to a women’s college (that obviously I can’t answer even though I attended one also, just not the same one!) So it’s good that she’ll be able to have this interview after all!

@3tallblonds I hear that my son is set and not to worry, but that’s never true of ivies and similar. I’m getting nutty too!

@eyemamom. So sorry to hear about your cat. Mine died during Freshman year at college at it was really hard. Probably best the think of the least painful route for the animal, not keeping it alive and in pain.

Akmom124: Not to worry about the email mishap and the missed interview. Same thing happened to my DD’12 (Georgetown). She was very upset that they could not schedule an interview. She got in anyway.

Congratulations on all of the good news! We had some today as well-an acceptance and notification of finalist for the school’s top merit scholarship. Haven’t visited this school yet but have received very personalized e-mail and letter today from them. It is nice to be wanted after all of the work. Also received today a hand written postcard from another school’s admin officer who read the app and referred to his essay topic and said they enjoyed it. Would this be a good sign? This is from a selective school.

So much good news!

Congrats to @eyemamom on a decision (and sorry about the cat!). I really liked Auburn when we visited, but of the two in that state, the other one won out and got the application. May have had something to do with guaranteed scholarship $$.

I agree, @3tallblondes, everyone just assumes that DS will get in wherever and will get great scholarships. I am honestly concerned about the financial packages and whether or not we will be able to afford the ones that are still on his list.

Congrats, @Mrspepper, on the finalist status!

@akmom - glad the interview was rescheduled. I hate when things are out of our hands!

We had a small celebration during family dinner - DS received his National Merit Finalist letter tonight!

Congrats @4bearsolls! I think that should have been a BIG celebration!

Congrats @4bearsdolls! Our DS got his today, too. It was a banner day at the mailbox today.

Congratulations to all for all the arriving good news. It feels like bragging because I posted in the Miami University - Ohio forum already, but DS 14 received a full tuition scholarship and admission the the University Academic Scholars Program.

That’s so cool @Dave_N! Happy for you and DS. Congrats!

Congrats to the NMS finalists!

Congrats to the Miami (OH) scholarship. My older S graduated from Miami back in the late '90’s. Loved the school and the town. Younger S-2011 and D-2014 passed as they wanted a smaller school and wanted to go out of state.

DS got his merit aid from Miami OH today too. Not quite as generous as dave_n’s offer but still nice. $20k per year, and since we are OOS that is essentially half the COA. Unfortunately DS isn’t really interested at the moment, despite the fact that he would have serious money at graduation if he takes this offer. Even though it is slightly less than what Case Western offered him, Case’s COA is about $18k more than Miami’s so he would come out ahead financially if he took Miami. Of course, the best deal he’s got on the table is Alabama with free tuition plus an additional $2k on top of that, but Alabama is last on his priority list. His remaining two schools will not offer him any merit so if he ends up at either of those two schools it will completely deplete his college fund.

It doesn’t matter to us what he chooses since our total costs will be the same (it’s just a matter of whether we pay out to DS or to the school), but it might matter to him!

Right now he’s trying to figure out what he’s going to be doing over the summer. Part of him wants to spend it just hanging out with his friends before they all scatter, but another part realizes he should probably get a job of some sort, even if it’s just for spending money. We do give him an allowance but it won’t cover everything he wants to do. He is working as a basketball referee this winter and he’ll probably make around $1800 from that but he’s got some serious expenses, only some of which we’ll cover. He is planning another ski trip, he just plunked down $400 for his share of a house for Beach Week, plus he has prom, all night grad party, etc.

National merit letters x2 at our home
H and 2Ds going on a 6 college tour next week. Hope it brings some clarity to the decision making. 4/6 they’ve been accepted to, 2 awaiting decisions. Weird to go to a school now that you applied to but don’t know what the outcome is.

Congrats on all the NMS letters and wonderful scholarships and acceptances! Such wonderful news!

I can’t believe we have another 6 weeks to wait to hear final decisions! Almost as bad as 6 more weeks of winter! At least for DD she’ll be really busy with vacation next week visiting schools (and prom dress shopping!) and after that the final rehearsals and tech week for the musical she’s directing, not to mention learning lines and music for the school musical she has the lead in. All that should keep her mind off the wait. And I’m hoping one of the schools we see next week will become a favorite safety and some sort of narrowing down will happen.

For now, we wait and watch the weather for the next storm!!
