@onlyonemom–you can look up wait list stats on the Common Data set for each college. Acceptances off WL vary widely across schools and even from year to year at the same school. Generally, there isn’t much movement off WL at highly selective schools but then you will see 100 taken to an Ivy one year with almost none the next.

Great news@jasmine rose, @minnymom, @asleepathewheel & @momofwon! Acceptances are always nice, even when our kids aren’t thrilled with the schools. At the end of the day, (or at final docking of the Indecision 2014 Cruise) it’s nice that they’re wanted and appreciated somewhere.

@eyemamom- That is a tough situation. Can she change her profile and just leave off the religion piece? I think sometimes young people (as well as adults) have a tendency to plug people into stereotypes that have no bearing on reality. Has she visited the school?

DS got his first acceptance: UCSC. It’s not his first choice but I think it would be a fine school for him, and might even be the best fit.

UCSD was supposed to release their decisions yesterday but their website crashed under the weight of so many students trying to get the results. My son checked a little bit ago and it is not yet operational. I am guessing it will be up by tomorrow, when he will hear from them as well as from UCSB.

At that point, we’ll have enough information to take the voyage. I’m already packed.

@calla1- Congrats on UCSC. Hoping for more good news tomorrow! It will be interesting to know what feels best to your S once he has all options in front of him.

I took S14’s spring break off (week before Easter) anticipating that we may need to visit his top choices before he commits to one. Today I booked a hotel in the vicinity of them… Just in case. Oh boy, it is getting real!

Great news@Calla! Bummer about UCSD. Hopefully he doesn’t have to wait too long for the decisions. How frustrating.

@calla1
UCSD’s portal is now up and released decisions.

Getting all good UC news so far (2 still to come) and a WL at first private. Feeling relieved. We’re all getting there!! Congrats to everyone on their good news.

Sheesh!!! Does anyone else have the problem of their kids NOT WANTING TO LOOK?!

My son is calmly brushing his teeth. He has informed me he doesn’t want to be distracted by college thoughts tonight. So, even though he knows UCSD is up now (thanks, 2018dad), he’s going to go to bed without checking. He’s asked me to please not say the word “college” around him until he brings it up. He also told me he’s sure I can’t do it but he would like me to try.

Maybe because his #1 choice will post decisions tomorrow and he figures he’ll wait until then. I don’t know. It’s driving me a bit crazy so I’m ranting to you guys instead of trying to steal his computer to sneakily log on myself. And believe me, the thought has definitely crossed my mind.

If he doesn’t check by tomorrow night, I’m not sure what I’ll do. Probably think of an excuse to have him look up something on the computer and think of some pretext to get him to check.

Anyone else in this boat?

You’re just too nice, Calla1! I have all of go2girl’s portal passwords! Yes, it would absolutely drive me crazy!

@calla1 - I would be logged on to see the decisions and just not tell him.

D and I went to Philadephia this weekend for the EA accepted students weekend at Villanova. They did a real nice job with the formal program on Saturday and everything went well other than a Friday class visit. D sat in a Chem 2 lecture with about 60 - 70 kids and three of the kids around her were either talking or texting the entire time which she found distracting and annoying. The good news, she said, was that she knew most of the answers to the questions being asked and discussed by the professor. It’s still her #1 school choice as of now pending the final acceptance decisions in two weeks and the FA numbers.

The other good news is that we took some of our free time on Friday afternoon and found D a prom dress! Yes, Dad scored some points for this effort. And we got nearly 1/3 off as well! AvonMom is very happy. (Smiley face!)

@calla1, I can kind of see why your DS wants to wait and view both schools tomorrow. My DS always wants to know immediately so I never had to log in myself. And @go2mom, I, too, have DS’ portal passwords! ;))

I think all these kids are just too laid back! I finally had to tell my DS that he couldn’t do anything today until he completed a college related task that I had been asking him to do for two weeks! He needed to sign on to one of the schools’ portals and he asked ME how to do it! It’s a good thing I’ve been helping him keep up with portal password because he wouldn’t have a clue otherwise. How will they make it at school??

Doris Day’s song “Que Sera, Sera … Whatever Will Be Will Be” keeps replaying in my head! Not a care in the world for that boy! :)

LOL- we are all so much alike. I have logged onto the portals “in secret” then feigned surprise when S shares some news ( that I already new .)

What a crazy time of it this weekend trying to get the news about UCSD! D is also pretty low-key about all this college stuff, and is perfectly happy for me to log in and find out (especially after the fiasco yesterday-- yeah, mom, you do this!!) Of course, on the 27th it will be a different story when she is waiting for UCB to post.

So – we got official notice of acceptance for UCSC (we knew from Regents invite that it was coming) and finally, an hour or so ago, that she also was accepted at UCSD! Very good news, as she now has a few great options to choose from if UCB doesn’t come through (and with her chosen major – it just dawned on her that her major is impacted at UCB, so she says if she doesn’t get it, she won’t go there. She hasn’t been allowed to take art classes at her current school until this semester, and then only because she had applied to CSUCI and the classes were transferrable there, so she refuses to go anywhere that she can’t major in art). We’ve made arrangements to stay with friends in Poway near San Diego for Tritons Day early next month, and we’ll take D15 along if possible, so she can check out the campus too.

@PetraElise
I agree. What a crazy weekend it was. I’m glad it turned out good for your D and she got accepted at UCSD. Enjoy Tritons Day. We’re from SD and we love it here. Of course, since UCSD is just few miles from us and her HS is a feeder to the university, she’s not keen on attending UCSD.

So far, D is 6 out of 6, so she will have good options if UCLA/UCB and her ultra reach will not work out.

One thing that I learned from this process, is that some schools are not safety anymore even for high-stat kids. I’ve seen kids that were rejected/waitlisted at CalPoly SLO, UCSD, UCD and Case Western that has almost perfect SAT and grades. In fact the decision thread at CalPoly and Case Western got really hot because some rejected/waitlisted kids and their parents were bashing the school and the accepted students. At Case, a lot of the kids that were waitlisted were already accepted to Stanford/WUSTL/Chicago and other elite institutions.

Congratulations everyone on the new acceptances! So nice to have such great choices! The Lido deck on the SS Indecision is going to be full.

Captain, I am most impressed that you went prom dress shopping with your D! I can’t imagine my D’s father or stepfather being able to tolerate shopping with D.

@calla1 - I’m right there with the others regarding the passwords and logging into the portals. It would drive me crazy knowing the information was available and I couldn’t see it. I hope you have good news this morning!

@calla1 - I have to confess that I have all my S password for school portals. I am the one who checks first and then I tell him to check. Last Friday, I checked Brandeis portal early and sent as a txt to check the portal. Mid day! I sent him another txt - did you check the portal? It’s good news! …no…I finally, I sent him a congratulations note via txt around 5pm - he txt back you mean I got in? …duh!..
I know he doesn’t want to get his hopes up if the FA doesn’t come through but isn’t he the least bit curious? …

Congratulations to everyone on the acceptances!

My nephew is now wait listed at 3 schools -MIT, WUSL and now Case Western…Case was suppose to be a safety school! His Stats- GPA 3.9 , SAT 2250, Several SAT 2 - high 700… many AP classes…poor guy…He applied to 16 schools, I am hoping he has a few schools to choose from…

onlyonemom and 2018dad, do you have any theories why these high-stats kids are getting WL or rejected from their safeties? (That’s so scary!) Do you think it is because their stats are TOO perfect, and those schools know the kids applied to higher-ranked schools and only applied to them (Case, UCD, etc) as safeties?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. And it’s another snow day in No. VA!!! We have close to a foot at our home. No school today. Probably no school tomorrow. Well, Son '14 can spend his time doing physics and stats (he has a project due soon). He also needs to do some scholarship apps. Yes, the nagging Mom has returned.

It’s good Son '14 got a call from a friend who is a distance runner at one of our rivals schools. They ran more than eight miles Sunday afternoon before the snow hit. He probably won’t be able to run again for several days.

This snow thing is so old. Need Spring!
