Parents of the HS Class of 2014

I think there’s still a chance with Sal since the class average grades are so low. We’ll have to wait and see until all the finalized grades are posted.

His schedule for this new trimester is whacko. He has Creative Writing, AP English, Discrete Math/Math Analysis, AP Calc and AP Stats. Got enough math going on kid? Ack. I would have hated that schedule! He was very limited in his options for 3rd period based on what was offered and he thought that Discrete Math might help him build up skills for college stats classes. It was the math class or Civil Wars and he isn’t fond of the teacher for Civil Wars.

@akmom124, I’ve seen you on some of specific college threads my D has applied to: maybe our Ds will wind up at the same school!

At our school the kids have no idea about the stats, gpa, rank of any of the other kids. So while they might know if they are in the top 10, Val and Sal is really a mystery until its announced a few weeks before grad. They really wouldnt even know if they missed it by a hair.

@staceyneil - maybe! Or yours could end up at my alma mater! Mine didn’t apply there and I don’t think it is a good fit for her but I loved it when I was there. DD doesn’t have a real first choice as we’ve said let’s see what comes in money wise and acceptance wise. This week and next week could be interesting - I know they’ll be stressful!

@akmom124 - yes it’s going to be stressful! D is checking email frequently though I told her she probably won’t hear anything until tomorrow evening. We actually have plans to go to the school play tomorrow night but if her results are not in I wonder if we’ll be able to tear ourselves away from the computer!

My fingers are crossed for both girls (and everyone’s kids, really!!! it makes me so happy to read about the happy results here!)

Booboo, I actually emailed them. The rep seems really nice, and is looking into it. College Board → CNU didn’t work well with EA; they didn’t get his scores, so we had to re-send and they deferred which was reasonable. We have been thinking the mail was slow, but five days to another part of the state seems excessive, so now we see what she finds out. I really hope the scores got there this time and there is not something else weirdly missing…

89wahoo: My son got his acceptance from CNU about three weeks ago. He has no desire to attend the school, for two reasons. One, he got a much better offer from an OOS state. Two, at least 10 people from his school will attend CNU. To him, that’s like high school all over. As for VT, this is about the time they release, usually before UVA. One of my students who was deferred by UVA thinks the decisions will come out around the 25th. I do know that UVA law makes decisions much quicker than the undergrads. My older son knew within two weeks of applying that he was accepted.

@89wahoo - I think our kids had a similar list. D got in CNU and JMU early action, and decided not to apply to Va Tech after much debate. I really liked CNU, I thought it would have been a good fit for her. She decided in the end she wanted a big school. She wouldn’t even go look at JMU because too many kids from school are going there. I don’t know how you explain to a kid that knowing 3 or 4 kids out of 10,000 isn’t exactly an overwhelming “high school” experience.

The poor kids on the NW thread are having heart attacks over speculation that results were going to be emailed 3 minutes ago.

Yes, and none have been mailed yet. I’m kind of hoping it doesn’t come until my S is back home. He likes the two schools he has gotten into, but this is one of his I LOVE IT schools. If he gets in, I want to see his face when he finds out. If he doesn’t, I want to be there- even though I know he’ll put on a big brave front. I won’t be able to act like I know I it stings, but I’ll be there to hang out, watch hockey with him, etc.

Is anyone else feeling the strain of not being able to plan your next month? I want to get away for a couple of nights with my H and S, but if he gets into school A then we need to visit; if he doesn’t get into any other schools, he should attend a weekend at one he’s gotten into. The possibilities seem endless and I can’t plan work/leisure activities with all the unknowns! Sorry to vent…

@Collegetime18 -definitely!! I was just saying that to H this morning, that it’s making me crazy not to be able to finalize plans. However, at least she has visited the top two schools (two of the last to post decisions in the upcoming two weeks) so that helps. We know she got in to UCSD, so visiting there for Triton’s Day, and she just got notice that she is a Campus Merit Recipient and FYHP member for UCSC, so we are going to UCSC for Spotlight and Chancellor’s reception later in April. Just waiting on scholarship info and admission info on a few more schools to complete the travel schedule for next month. Whittier’s FA package wasn’t enough, so we are scratching that one off the travel list and won’t go to the President’s reception at the end of this month. I guess it’s shaping up somewhat, lol.

At D’s school, we have no immediate access to Val/Sal info, but based on last updates to transcripts, I’m not expecting D to receive either honor. She was ranked 8, so would need several people to come down with Senioritis in a big way. Nice thing is, we aren’t stressing about it, because it’s so unlikely. Sorry to hear about your S’s worry and potential disappointment @2016Barnardmom. Hope it all works out!

Our community also has a recognition dinner for 4.0 students – should be interesting to see other families from our previous schools, as I know at least one also will be attending the dinner. A reunion of sorts for kids that started out in Kindergarten together. Although, the friendships kind of faltered along the way.

^^^ feeling the same way! I would like to go somewhere warm! But S did not visit many schools so we will need to visit a few schools before he makes a final decision. It is hard to plan R&R w/o knowing…feeling stressed and just wish April 1 would get here!

I did R&R beginning of the month in anticipation, lol. H had a gig in AZ at a fancy resort which included a free room and food for the weekend – I was completely up for that!

@2016BarnardMom-DS just left for play practice and NW just sent a link to his email account. Must. Not. Look.

At D’s school the AP tests are optional although the girls are encouraged to take them. We also have to pay for them.

Northwestern has released their RD notifications via emails with a link. There is also a report of an instagram with a welcome message. If any of your kids applied, have them check their emails for the link. One applicant reported finding the email in their spam mail. And so the party begins and the stress begins to ramp up. Hang on for the ride!

He left his computer on with the web browser and email open. The email is there. Have to wait and see when he checks it on his phone.

@2016BarnardMom - That waiting must be so hard!!

You NW moms have more self-restraint than I do! Good luck!
