Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@2014novamom, our experience with the packages at the residence hall linens company (can’t remember the exact name) was that the sheets are very poor quality, scratchy, and ill fitting. We did like the mesh laundry baskets though.

@apollo6,

Yes, I am very proud of her for making the decision that was right for her, she shut out all of the outside noise and listened to what she wanted…not everyone telling her that Yale was the best. I really wanted to give my opinion but I resisted…

Ugh. Just back from the orthopedist with DD '18, who fractured her wrist at soccer practice last night. Normally you can play soccer in a cast so long as it is padded and bubble wrapped but the fracture extends into the joint and the orthopedist advised her not to play for at least a week. She is bummed because her team is headed to an out-of-state tournament this weekend. She is also a starter and never gets subbed out so she feels as if she is letting the team down. We are still going to drive up and cheer the team on though!

Thanks for the advice on the dorm bedding packages. We will just buy our own.

The best part of those omni heat jackets @CT1417 - is that they’re not bulky, which is the main issue that Spykid has with outer layers. On occasion a friend will have an extra pass to the employee store and I’m buying myself a jacket the next time I get a pass.

Sorry about your daughter @2014novamom and what a bummer to miss the tournament :(. Here in Oregon, players are not allowed on the field with casts.

I was wondering about dorm insurance so thanks for reminding me @Avondad. Please pass along reputable companies if you know of any.

@MImama - Not sure how prolific the rain is in Nashville, but we live in the PNW so I feel qualified to discuss liquid sunshine. We like waterproof jackets, so we buy any gore tex or similar product. Once again Columbia Sportswear has good products and I have worn their products in the rain on spy missions and they’ve proved to be amazing even in horrible conditions. Not sure if you have an REI near you but they carry Mountain Hard Wear, and similar brands. Once again, LLBean and Lands End have quality jackets.

@NewHavenCTmom‌ - Congratulations on your D’s decision to attend Yale! And kuddos to you for giving her space to figure it out for herself!

@2014novamom‌ - I’m sorry to hear about your D’s injury. I hope she’s able to return to the field before the season is over.

@crowlady - thanks! You’re always welcome to weigh in:).

@mlmama - A pair of Wellingtons and a good raincoat are a must. Those light weight fatigue jackets are popular and a great choice for in-between days. A pea coat for colder days. Lots of layering clothes (light sweaters, etc,) for schizophrenic weather. Jack Rogers. And, since many on CC comment on the southern purse thing - a great designer purse lol!

@Overtheedge - Had never heard of Jack Rogers so I googled. Cute purses. But what stunned me is that he makes sandals in sorority colors! Is this just a Southern thing or am I out of the loop?

Do people actually carry purses at southern colleges?

The Jack Rogers sandals are super popular and versatile. Vandy has such a mix of students that anything goes. But, it is still a southern school, and especially among Greeks, the southern traditions and attire - dressing for football games, Barbour coats, sundresses, pearls and purses are still evident.

Already got d the requisite jack rogers sandals so she could break them in. While we were on vacation she ran into a woman wearing a pair. She said hers were 3 years old and took a year to break in! eegads Apparently jack rogers “broke up” and lily pulitzer sells the partners sandals and they’re more comfortable.

@Apollo6 - we are happy to “see” you. You’ve been in everyone’s thoughts.

@Apollo6 - so good to see you on CC again.

Love all the lists and links for dorm room essentials! @mathmomvt - Really appreciate all your insight - I’m keeping a master list of dorm room essentials (to include a list provided by her university) on my iPad, which I keep adding to based on CC advice.

@momreads - Congratulations to your son!! What an incredible final hs season he is having! And congrats on the scholarship - so good to see all those essays paying off! Your S has a full tuition scholarship, doesn’t he? My D has applied to about 11 local scholarships. My good friend, who I walk with every morning, told me most scholarships can only be applied to tuition. I’m really hoping she is wrong as my D is just shy of a full tuition scholarship, and even with my 2 boys attending the local CC in the Fall, costs will add up quickly. I’m hoping that if my D receives scholarships that would more than cover her remaining tuition, that we can apply any additional monies to her room and board. Are you aware of any scholarships being limited to tuition only?

@2016BarnardMom - What a great trip to NY, made all the more so in that it helped your S come to a resolution! How wonderful your S could join the band on their final trip for the year!

Congrats @jrmama496 and @yellowgranite56 - What a great pick!

Yay!!! @2014ProDad. Congrats on your D’s Harvard decision!

Congrats @SoWest!! Wonderful to end this decision- making process with such wonderful offers!

Welcome @Bestmominmiami! Congrats on Cornell!

@3tallblonds - So sorry to hear about your Emergency Room detour, and hope you are well on the road to recovery now! Congratulations on the USC visit - so glad you decided to take that one last visit there, and can now put your mind at peace knowing your two Ds are happy!

@Overtheedge - Congratulations on your Sewanee decision - so wonderful that your D can start school knowing the school is 100% behind her!

@jeannemar - I’m with you! As you said there’s no enrollment deposit, I’d definitely want to see written confirmation from the school acknowledging his admission acceptance.

@AvonHSDad - Hadn’t thought about dorm insurance, but now that you mention it, it sure sounds well worth considering, my main concern being D’s laptop (which we’ll probably get her as a grad present). Looking forward to any leads you get.

@2014novamom - So sorry about your DD’18’s fractured wrist and that she’ll have to miss playing in the out-of-state tournament! As hard as I’m sure it is to her to sit on the sidelines, I’m sure it will mean a lot to her teammates having her there to cheer them on. Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery!

@4beardolls and @MrsPepper -Thinking of both of you! There is light at the end of the tunnel - just a couple more days and you’ll both be able to take a sigh of relief.

@Apollo6 - glad to see you. I want you to know you come to mind frequently and I pray for you and your family often.

Welcome back, Apollo6! So happy to see you.

Wow–so many fantastic decision! These kids are going places…a lot of GREAT places!

I have never heard of Jack Rogers either. Good grief…what is my little hipster to do? A whole new shopping vocabulary to learn. Of course, living in the Northwest, we’re used to rain and I venture to guess she will still be seen stomping in puddles in her Birkenstocks and wool socks!

We’ve got chic Northeast city girls heading to sunny CA, Birkenstock wearing girls heading to the land of Jack Rogers, New England girls (Dr. Martens?) and Southern girls heading to different parts of the country…maybe we should have a wardrobe exchange?

Speaking of wardrobes - my S recently relocated with his job from Charleston to Austin TX. He mentioned on the phone that when he went to a club, he was the only one in khakis. All the other men were wearing dark wash jeans. When I suggested he buy himself a pair (when in Rome…) he said he preferred his khakis. He reasoned that Austin was all about individuality (their slogan “Keep Austin Weird”) and he figured he would do his part to be different. Made me smile:).

Welcome back Apollo6!

Let me join in and welcome Apollo6. Definitely think about you every time I open this thread.

Had my own trip to the ER tonight – line drive to the elbow for S (ow!). Nothing broken, thank God.

re: Jack Rogers – first found them while vacationing in Sea Island. Now they’re a staple of D’s footwear collection.

Owww! @Classof2015. Sounds like you’re going to have a sore elbow for awhile! Thank goodness you didn’t break it - wishing you quick healing!

What prompted the Jack Rogers discussion? They have been around forever, and haven’t changed much. Mothers wore them when I was growing up. Very much the country club look, but I never wore them, as I wasn’t willing to put in the time to break them in. I feel like they had their moment again ten years ago but have not noticed them as much in recent years. Will have to be on the lookout, assuming it is ever sandal weather here.

Never heard of Jack Rogers. Hmmm…guess I’ve been living too long in the land of Birkenstocks and Tevas out here in the PNW. I’m sure my fashionista D will come home from her first semester in upstate NY with an entirely new footwear, outerwear, accessory, etc. vocabulary. And…I’m sure I’ll still be just as clueless and spouting my “function over fashion” sensibilities.

@3tallblonds Congratulations to you and your Ds for choosing USC, its a great School with Great city and beautiful Weather… I am sure they will love the School… I think its much better option then Pitt…

My son is going to Chapman this fall. We deposited a few days ago, but I’ve been lurking to avoid having to serve a shift behind the bar. I think he made a good choice. :)
