Parents of the HS Class of 2014

My daughter got the college success book, Making College Count, as a graduation gift. I didn’t think she would read it but she did, and thought it was outstanding. She feels like it will be very helpful when she gets to college. I read it too, and think that I will provide much better counsel as a college parent having read the book.

Has anyone purchased tuition insurance? Or dorm insurance? Our homeowners’ deductible is too high to be of any use to my son at college, so other than naming his dorm as another covered location for liability purposes, he will be w/o theft insurance. Not overly concerned, but am wondering what others have done or are planning to do?

I am seriously considering purchasing a tuition insurance, but haven’t researched much about it.

I found dorm insurance for $87 a year. Going to purchase it for my daughter.

I’ve looked into it before and tuition insurance is generally very expensive, and very limited. It generally only covers certain medical conditions that would cause a withdrawal.

Any recommendations for a compact printer for the room? DS gets free printing throughout campus but it would be convenient to have one in-room if he needs to print something at 2 am on a cold February night (not that this would ever happen of course!). The cheaper laser printers are pretty bulky so we’re looking at a slim ink jet I guess.

@2018dad – $300 for the $47K tuition. Letter arrived yesterday. I need to research more, but in my lazy manner, decided to post here first!

@bisou – are you using a company a friend has used/suggested?

@2014novamom – I am still on the lookout for a monochrome laser with small footprint. I have had good luck in the past with Brother and HP. They were available at Christmas for perhaps $60, and should have bought for my son then, but didn’t want it sitting in a box unused for eight months. The temporary toner cartridge tends to run for 1500 pages, so definitely more cost-effective than ink jets. When you buy, don’t forget the cable, as they are often sold w/o the cable.

Just popping in and saw mentions of the BB&Beyond coupons. It may have already been mentioned, but the BB&Bs that I have been to will take their own coupons waaaaay past the printed expiration dates. I’ve used them that had been ‘expired’ for months, and pointed it out them…no problem.

The latest BB&B coupon we received was for 20% off if used by mid-August, and then would drop to 10% off. I think this is their way around accepting the expired coupons. The cashier told me to use that one right away, because there are no plans to stop honoring the expired coupons that I’ve been hoarding (which will always be worth 20% off).

Would love to hear names of companies to use for tuition insurance, as well as printer models. D also has free printing on campus but I think a desktop printer may come in handy in a mad rush to meet a deadline.

Brother has a compact laser printer available on Amazon that gets really good reviews. It’s in my cart for DD.

Also, there’s College Student Insurance for insuring their stuff. $5,000 coverage with a $25 deductible is $131 total. I have the same policy for DS’11 (increased it when he moved off campus and had snowboard equipment, golf clubs and had purchased furniture but the $5,000 seems like it would be enough for her in a dorm room). I have no claims history but people seem to be satisfied. And the low deductible is good for student issues.

Something came in the mail about tuition insurance but I haven’t had a chance to focus on that yet. Just yesterday made a list of all the rest of the little things DD still needs that aren’t in the piles on the ping pong table in the basement - Motrin, cough medicine (we’ve used up all in the house as we’re both sick right now!), neosporin, etc.) And requested food snacks to supply her with. Her party is in another week so we’ll see what gifts she receives and fill out from there but since she doesn’t go until the end of August we actually have a bit of time left!

Yes, we purchase tuition insurance each year for DS1 at Cornell. They have some nasty rules regarding paying back financial aid so that if our son had a medical withdrawal, we’d be on the hook not only to lose what we’d paid, but end up owing them additional money as well! DS1 did have some medical issues one term and came pretty close to needing to withdraw, but then got things under control. It’s nice not having to think about $$$ when something like that comes up.

We also purchase contents insurance through NSSI (good whether in dorm or apartment). It also covers accidental damage to something like a laptop or ipod, so it seems worthwhile. DS1 has never needed to a claim so far. CSI is the other company. I think we chose NSSI originally because they had a lower minimum, and DS1 wasn’t bringing much to school.

We will get the contents insurance for DS2 also. I’m not sure about the tuition insurance. He has a full tuition scholarship, and UVM doesn’t seem to have any policy requiring that to be paid back in the event of a medical withdrawal. UVM’s “tuition” insurance actually covers the cost of room & board too, and you pay based on the amount you are insuring, so we could get insurance to cover the R&B amount, but I’m not really sure we need to insure that, since it’s an amount we can afford to lose. Then again DS2 is more likely to have a medical withdrawal than DS1 so maybe we should.

I toy with the tuition insurance for BarnardGirl but haven’t done it yet. Maybe this year. She ended up having a major medical freshman year and I thought she was going to end up withdrawing in March but she ended up finishing the term (with better grades than the fall term even!) It kind of haunts me that it could be an issue for her. Not planning on doing it with my S though.

We have a Brother monochrome laser printer at home and I am very satisfied with it. Toner lasts a long time and it was easy setup with our wireless network. It’s kind of bulky though, since it’s an all-in-one.

I am deciding between the single function laser and an all-in-one inkjet, leaning towards the inkjet. Both are wireless but from what I understand that functionality probably won’t matter in a dorm since most won’t let you add a printer to the network. So for convenience it would be better to have a printer that can print directly from a flash drive, is Air Print compatible, etc. and the laser jet trumps on those grounds.

I’m not planning on getting S2 a printer - most of the kids use the school’s print center in the library. S1 just graduated from the same school and loved it.

I’m definitely trying the dryer sheet suggestion - it’s inexpensive and can’t hurt.

We have a pile building in the family room, just where my D’s pile began 2 years ago. This pile is significantly smaller than hers was and only has to travel 40 miles instead of 600. This launch is going to be a piece of cake. I’m so relieved

And our pile is in our in law suite, growing larger, and the trip is longer than for her brother. It will be a 12 hour drive that we’re breaking up over 2 days. The goal is 8 the first day, 4 the next, unload our luggage at the hotel and go to BB & B and move in will be early the next day. Then sorority recruitment starts that night. She’ll be exhausted by the time classes start.

Glad to hear everyone had piles…we have a big pile growing in Ds room and I was wondering if this was normal. W have bren going by the lists on cc and trying to keep the stuff to necessities but it still seems like a lot! :-B
